  1. Re:no on Should Colleges Monitor Students' PCs? · · Score: 1

Well, maybe they shouldn't... but they should require a personal firewall and set network resource limits... requiring another controlled firewall between the room and the network. They should protect the network and not control the PC.

Another photographer here... I love my old Beseler SLR but the Sony f707 has enough manual control to be worthy. I love digital because I can take more picture without shelling out for processing, and I have instant feedback so I can try again if something doesn't turn out as planned. I wish I had your patience for darkrooms, because that stuff is great too! See my photos.

  3. You never grow out of ADDHD on Working with ADHD? · · Score: 1

I was diagnosed with ADD when I was 12. I am now 24, and while I have learned to cope somewhat, it is a hinderance in some areas and a blessing in others. Sometimes I can't switch my attention when I need to. Sometimes I pay attention to too many things at once, for example, it can be hard for me to pay attention to someone talking in a crowded room, because I am tuning into multiple conversations. For the same reasons I think I am able to notice details that many miss, and I think that sometimes when I am working really hard I am able to focus at a more intense level, because I can't switch my attention to other distractions. I stopped taking medications for ADD, because I found intense exercise to work just as well in controlling it, without the side effects (eating, sleeping irregularities). Not only did I have to learn how to focus during the exercise, but the hormones and healing process afterwards will help anyone in any situation be more level, controlled, and focused. This goes for depression as well... Go ahead and take meds because they can definately help, but without regular exercise, you *will* slip back into the depression eventually. As for ritilin, it may be that you will never learn how to cope with ADD unless you see what it feels like to be able to pay attention. Try it out. If it doesn't work or has too many side effects, try another.

You also have to remember that any of our "evidence" is only relative to our current perspective. Newton developed his laws over a period of time, slowly connecting them based on evidence. We have since found those "laws" to be true only when the effect of other dimensions of physics are minimal. Newton realised this as well when he developed equations that assume that the earth is flat. In the right field of reference(such as here in my cube), it may as well be.

I agree, and besides, technology has as much potential for good as for evil. It also gives control to smaller units, which is what the USA was originally about. Considering that guns have been around long enough that we have the knowledge to manufacture them in our basements, the same will be true of many technologies, and this is not a bad thing. Maybe someday we will have the technology to be able to replicate custom processors in the back shed!

Not to mention slavery and impressing soldiers. Even a few white soldiers are documented as having become impressed into indian tribes as soldiers. Some of them eventually led normal lives, having children and families(after being abused for a year or so).

South Africa: Note that the native Africans there now are not the same blacks that were there to meet the Dutch when they first sailed down, but have pretty much conquered and replaced the bush men. They are just as un-pretty as the imperialists.

China: You mention about the Chinese people being shrewd and civilized.. They certainly were, and while they have kept a lot more of their culture than a lot of Communist countries, it is amazing what communism does to extinguish progress.
