  1. Developer/Designer needs input on Flash and Open Source · · Score: 1

I'm very interested in this post as a soon-to-be-college grad going into web design and development. In one month, I'll be working at a small web co. doing a little of each (I love design and have to learn the developmental side, i.e. Perl, php - I'm not a programmer but I think I can handle this with my minimal knowledge of Java.) I digress. I would like to hear from /. peeps on 2 main questions: 1) How do you feel about Flash, overall? 2) How do you feel about Flash if the web page is designed so it's not 100% necessary to have the plugin (i.e. it's got an HTML alternative and the user chooses [www.stubblehead.net])? For example, what if the page checks for the plugin and directly goes to either html.html or flash.html, with no user intervention (my site is set up like the former). I'm very interested in people's opinion on this - please reply or email [etabone1@ic3.ithaca.edu]. And please save the one-liners and reasonless posts for someone else. Thanks y'all -e PS - Givens: -I don't plan on using Flash for every project (hardly any) -I know when simple static pages work better than flashy (no pun int.) ones -Replies will also help gauge the desire/hatred of Flash-ed elements on a page, i.e. Flash buttons in an otherwise coded page

  2. funny on Blizzard removes Orcs from Warcraft III · · Score: 1

From GameSpot: "They just weren't working out," the Blizzard representative said. "One thing we've learned from Starcraft, and from the [Warcraft III] beta, is that having four sides is a lot harder to balance than having three sides." When asked specifically about what issues prompted the decision, the representative replied, "Well, it was really when we removed the pig farms a little while ago. The testers all loved that, so we were all, like, "Why stop there?'" The last line is hilarious. Viva 4/1! +1 to SenseOfHumor

  3. Re:Rehash of old material? on Star Wars II Trailer Online · · Score: 1

"get a big surprise when we go to see it"

I kind of hope there's nothing TOO big - my friend saw 'empire' and while on line, waiting a long ass time, someone ran out of the theatre and yelled 'darth is luke's father! darth is luke's father!'. (someone tackled him and proceeded to beat him, thankfully) think about how quickly the movie's plotlines and surprises will be posted online, to the point that you'll inevitably stumble on a site with the spoiler right there in your face (no /. 'click here for spoiler' option).

and to those who feel lucas is still cognitive and interested in the saga, just watch the 'behind the scenes' stuff in the ep1 dvd. he gives off the strong impression that he never EVER thought of expanding ch4-6 into 1-3 and 7-9, and had put SW on the shelf for 15+ years. he sounds like he wrote a completely new story from scratch which is why ep1 is decent as a movie, but sucks as a part of star wars, as the whole. i think 1-3 will all be okay on their own, but until he stops putting his freakin' daughter and her favorite pop icons in it, they'll never scratch the surface of what the original trilogy and it's plot is really all about.

[nerd alert: if you really want some insight on what the pre-New Hope stories are like, check out the sw rpg (pencil & paper). they have quite a few expansion books, some of which discuss what life was like before the empire and it's rise. much, much cooler than ep1, and it's closer in continuity.]
