Amen to Myst. However, once you get past the fact nothing jumps out, it's just a beautiful ambience, and if you can immerse yourself in it enough, when you save and quit, it's like coming out of a movie theater or waking up from a deep sleep. (Just think of how intently you listened to the 2 sons in the end, and how hard the initial decision was.) Maybe it was when and how I played the game (I was about 16 at the time, and it was over a summer with friends, in a very small, quiet library), but whenever I see the game on a shelf, I want to recommend it to a passerby like it's the greatest novel of all time. Yeah, I guess this classifies me as a pussy too, but a pussy who appreciates both art and technology.
(PS - the 2 sequels weren't even close to the impact of the original)
Most of the lights in SC are also destroyable, which makes for great fun.
Screw shadows! I don't know about you, but the first thing I'll be looking for in this game is how to turn as many lights on as possible. After I map all my vital keys, any leftovers become the "Use" function.
i agree but i didn't want to put down mike. i think he's okay, but i don't like the voices behind the bots now. and if you look at the credits, joel is still doing something (i forget what but i'll look in the morning). he was cool, very laid back, and had funny comments. what i did was invest in the tapes of those shows (only to, very shortly, start falling into DVD's, which forced a $65 VCR purchase just to watch 'em, and my taped simpsons). the story outside of the movies i don't get - there was a transitionary period that i missed, i guess. but the movies are still terrific - i do the same thing with 90% of the movies i'm forced to swallow from hollywood: yack away, with my robot friends(/voices).
...saturday morning MST3K? Granted it's not as good as it once was, but it's still hilarious and better than any Saturday morning cartoon nowadays. (What the hell did they do Transformers, He-Man, and TMNT?!?)
I've got this electric-synapse device in my skull that's been working terrific for over 23 years. And the original batteries that came with it still work! The only downside is the warrenty/insurance - it's a large monthly fee, but, hey, it's an expensive, fragile piece of equipment.
Because the show is always on at that time slot. FOX wouldn't move 24 just because Flatliners was showing on TNT at the same time. I don't believe FOX and Bravo have the same corporate ties (I could be wrong) so no need to promote the other guys. How often, besides major sporting events, do you hear, "And don't forget to tune into [their station] after watching [show] on [a different station]!" Never.
God bless The Simpsons, in a non-religous kinda way.
I forget what the term is, but in economics there's a graph for this (like everything else). There's a line, considered average (saturated) and space above (super-saturated) and below (under-saturated) the line. When everyone is given the same tools (you have to assume the consumers/fans are also equal, so for arguments sake we'll say everyone who likes Janis likes Britney), eventually the sales will both flow towards the line. For Britney, since she's way above the line (sold kazillions of albums), she'd be brought down towards average (I won't try to pick a band to represent the line); herego, lost sales. But for Janis, who's been written about as an artist who just doesn't sell many albums (put aside these publicity boosts), her sales are brought up towards the line. ("300% increase" isn't much if you haven't sold many to begin with - a lot, relatively; few, absolutely).
This only holds true when all the extra variables hold equal, like any experiment, but we all know not every person either likes both of these women or hates both of these women equally. What we do see with this situation of technology vs. RIAA is the strong dichotomy between fans. Check out this month's WIRED for a great blurb on methods record company's are using to disuade critics from ripping and distributing MP3's in prerelease. I loved the example of Radiohead's 'listening party' at an aquarium - not only was it a great idea, but it sold tons of albums in the area. However, it's highly doubted if the artist was a more (primarily) commercial one, their fans would do the same (I'm guilty of being biased towards Radiohead here, but you get the idea).
Britney will still sell billions of CD's (and, unfortunately, do some RIAA commercials) even if it's less than she's used to (sorry, sweetie - only 4 new houses this year). And Janis will probably keep selling more albums if the technology is still available, albeit still far less than Britney. It boils down to the fans. I guess if you're a recording artist and you find your fans refuse to spend money on your music, maybe you should reconsider either you rmusic or your career. (I don't know about you but I take pride in my purchases.)
I've always felt AICN has been a 90's wanna-be Drudge Report, in that it never quite had it's Lewinsky story to made it famous (not Internet-famous, but famous). I mean, it's named after one of the corniest lines from a movie I've ever heard (Travolta in "Broken Arrow" - dialogue, people! Can we please get some real writers? Where's Charlie Kaufman?)
The Drudge Report sounds exactly like what it is: rumor-mongering, but it's at least effective. Maybe Harry should change "AICN" to "Harry's One-man Hypefest 5000" to better reflect it's content.
Click here to read the new belief on the Hindenburg tragedy. Essentially, "material used to coat the 'skin' of the airship, not hydrogen, was the cause of the disaster" - my father told me about this after watching a special on Discovery Channel a while back, which prompted my quick google search (I'm sure you can find more info online than just this one link - I just took one of the top results of "Hindenburg + hydrogen"). Of course, knowing the populace of this "1st" world country, it'll still take a lot of convincing before we advance towards these savior autos. Viva hybrid!... ity?...
i agreed with that for a long time, and still do, but it's hard to ignore the facts that parents can't watch their kids 24/7. i'm not a parent (22 y.o.) but i understand more now that when school's out in the afternoon, and mom and/or dad are working until 5pm+, little johnny might be at a friend's house, and then you have to entrust others with your child's well-being.
"well then don't let the kid go to that particular friend's house." yes, but it's hard to assess the friend's house 100%. the friend could have older siblings that have the game, or have a third friend with the game, or maybe the other parents are just plain ignorant of the video game situation and let the kid buy what he/she wants.
again, i do agree that the parents have to regulate their kids, but we all have to understand that you can't keep a child caged every minute of every day (and you shouldn't have to). also, i am in full support of video games being rated and enforced, much like the movie industry has been trying to do (success or failure? it's up and down, depending on where you live). i wouldn't mind senator (hopefully not soon-to-be-prez) lieberman so much if he was more in support of enforced regulation (and studied the facts more), and less for censorship. it boils down to our rights as americans (for those in the states, anyway). i don't think we'll have bans here, but it could get very close.
i quote a timeless duo:
Lisa : Dad, you can't judge a place you've never been to.
Bart : Yeah, that's what people do in Russia.
She's all about conspiracies herself. I'm sure he lends her a hand when she comes out with something new herself. His wife perhaps? (I still think the book looks interesting - and short enough to 'steal' by reading in the chain-store's nooks.)
BTW - Kang [D] in 2004!
COD? Come on. There's no way one party can pay over the $$$ at the exact moment the buyer decides the merchandise is good (this is why so many drug deals get botched). So a COD puts the buyer in control. I've been on eBay for years now, mostly as a seller, and I refuse to give such power over to the other party. For me, it's M.O. all the way (money order, not modus operandi, you legalites). If I'm selling, and you're coming to me, you're deciding to trust me. When an auction is over, and someone wins, there's NO choice but to sell to the highest bidder, so why would you leave everything up to some stranger? If you decide COD, the MINUTE you put something on eBay and someone bids, you lose ALL control. ("You gotta take the power back", to completely and inappropriately quote RATM.) Otherwise, you put your trust in any and every person on the face of the planet.
"Oh, you're the only bidder? Well, whatever your winning price (regardless of reserve), I guess it'll have to do and I'll have to trust you. Here are the goods!"
Please. "Here's my stuff. You want it? You send a M.O. to me, if you're ready to jump in and swim. Otherwise, stop wasting my time."

Once an amendment is added to a bill, it becomes a part of the bill as a whole. However, they can simply amend the bill again and again, with something as simple as injecting the word "not" before "have the power to destroy the U.S." It could like look:
Bill 666, 11/14/02: Gives power to scary database for use of privacy invasion
Amendment 1, 11/16/02: Reword "gives power" to "doesn't give power"
Amendment 2, 4/4/03: Reword "doesn't give power" to "gives as much power as needed"
etc.
Then, when Jeb takes office in 2008, there will be
Amendment 13, 12/2/09: Reword "gives all power in the world to congress" to "gives any and all Bushes complete control of Milky Way"
I propose that this site state its purpose: does it exist to provide news, or is it merely attempting to blast Microsoft in a selfish, childish, jealous manner?"
I guess it's purpose is allow people like yourself to promote whatever you want, like this vstoreelectronics.com you speak so highly of, and for people like me to respond.
I never finished Fellowship the book, nor did I go onto the next 2, so I was hoping the question of Gandalf's return would be answered only by seeing the film, not by a trailer/Net postings. But that's okay - he looked awesome as a Gray and his return should be interesting.
For the last week, I've been itching to post this but due to Net complications, it was not to be. However, fellow excited LOTR geeks, I am here to report I have seen the full trailer for The Two Towers, in a theatre, and you can too.
I live in Ithaca, NY, home of Cornell University, who (thankfully) continue to show films over the summer, and at the end of last week's screening of Fellowship, there was the (at least 3 minute) preview of Towers. I haven't seen this one online that everyone's talking about, but I'm assuming it's the same. I'm one of those who enjoys previews in the theatre before the feature, especially when it gets you all wet, like the LOTR trilogy. And this was amazing.
So I recommend to any and all, find a college close by that's screening Fellowship if you can. My theory is that they have an advance copy of the VHS (it wasn't DVD - their audio was awwwwful ) to show, and they let us see the preview. Thanks, CU.
Plan:
1. Round up a group of friends and have everyone buy one CD, all different. (Legal)
2. Everyone rip their CD. (Legal)
3. Slap a bow and a loving note on each CD, and swap the gifts with a buddy, 1:1. (Legal)
4. Rip your new gift. (Legal)
5. Repeat.
Seems legal to me. And please, even if you don't do this, write to the RIAA.

That's unfair - you can still buy OS X and install it separately. The machines that aren't supported to run OS X are pre-G3's, which are long before 2 years ago. Plus, this move was announced a long time ago - it just wasn't definitly defined by a date. It's not the hardware that's outdated, it's the software. And the developers were given the heads-up years ago, not last week. If you don't change with the world, you'll be sitting alone as it passes by.
