  1. Hold on there, Sparky... on Is HTML Copyrightable? · · Score: 2

CODE and CONTENT are two different things. We're talking about CODE. Right?

I agree with most of you guys, it seems to me that HTML is pretty damn un-copyrightable. What about all the free code sites, and all the O'Reilly books? Web Design is my job - please, whatever happens, don't let them take my <br> tag! My God, how would I feed my family?

  2. well, not really... on FTC Settles With Big CD Makers-Cheaper CDs Coming? · · Score: 1

...since the rise of piracy and mp3s, record sales HAVE gone up, even without lowering the price. That's one of the major arguments in favor of free music...it doesn't really seem to be hurting anybody's sales at the moment. The lowering of CD prices will only continue the trend, IMHO.

  3. .com, .net, .yourmom on EU Ministers Approve ".eu" Top-Level Domain · · Score: 1

Maybe I read wrong but I think that for American corporations to grab up .eu domains will be pretty difficult. GOOD. I think domain squatting sucks, and am still pretty sore about the fog around .com, .net and .org....they MEAN something, and should have been regulated to retain that meaning. Yes, more TLDs! .art, .pol (politics), .xxx (let's face it, it's there); whatever it takes to help wade through the billions of sites all competing for ONE .com name. We end up having to add characters and make the names too long for anybody to remember or type correctly (I worked on one a couple years back, www.stephenseuropeanbakery.com, holy crap that's a mouthful). It's just another headache for us web designers...as if browser wars and clients who want Flash movies of their dogs isn't enough.
Yes, I realize that the public is pretty tuned in to the .com ending, and most folks still give you weird looks when you say .org, but with advertising you can change that; and as more folks hop online it will become easier to do.

bill before the US House Of Reps. that would declare ALL published artistic musical work "work for hire". This is a VERY, VERY bad thing

I'm not a signed artist but this still pisses me off...all this focus on Napster and musician's rights has been drawing us away from finding out about this.

metallica's lawyers: "Hey, Napster is infringing on your rights! let's get 'em!"

metallica's record label: "Hey, now that we've pissed off your fans and gotten you lots of media attention, we thought we'd mention that we now own your work. Forever. And it's retroactive. Have a nice tour!"

What's a starving artist like me to do? Should we write our Congressperson? Storm the Senate? How about having a Million mp3 March? ;-)

Seriously though I think your flow chart for OSS growth is a bit optimistic...it sure would be nice if it did work that way but whenever you get more than one person involved in something there will be conflict.

Right on! here are a couple suggestions to start:
    Luxurious Fur
    Sutur
(Incidentally, Sutur got the Limp Bizkit Seal of Approval on MTV. Check Sutur's homepage for the video.) Mp3 bands are just as good, if not better than all that corporate rock. Most stuff on the radio is censored and watered-down, anyway.

Now, for all of the fledgling rockers of today, we have sites like mp3.com and people using things like Napster to spread the unsigned music. I am tickled when strangers download my latest song. I've gotten fan mail from as far away as France!
