Offtopic rant: I am sick and tired of all this "Hey moderators" bull. Let whoever has mod points moderate already. It seems in every article these days there are a few posts saying "I can't believe this got a 2" or "Mod this up" etc....leave it alone.

It's a bit hypocritical to bitch about something you yourself are guilty of, my homey.

    Exactly.
I'm a web designer for an ad agency, and while I agree that splash pages are the bane of the web, every client seems to want one. The last thing these folks care about is 'ease of use', they just want a better website than their competitors, which will invariably involve JavaScript, Flash, and other bandwidth hogging features.

I would love to give every one of my clients a copy of this book...sigh... Oh and one for the Art Dept., as well, who are having trouble understanding why a web page can't look exactly like the print ads they produce.

I just don't see 8 year olds being upset because they couldn't get to Ross Perot's website. I do, however, agree with a previous poster, that this was a good story and I'm glad it's here...

I am simply fuming. I've said it a zillion times, parents who let the TV/computer babysit, entertain, educate and raise their children for them are BAD parents. Kids need discipline, they need guidance. I played Quake feverishly when it came out, I played Mortal Kombat, etc., but my parents had taught me right from wrong and I knew how to seperate fantasty from reality.

Your quote is right on. Parents who don't pay attention to what their kids are doing have only themselves to blame. Not video games, not gun manufacturers, not society, not drugs, ad freaking nauseum...

I agree that this seems like a bull-headed stance to take on what seems an inevitability. I can see where he's coming from as far as people not wanting to read books online, I know working at a computer all day long gives me enough of a headache without reading "War and Peace" on a monitor, too. However, as you said, what about the books that are old and falling apart? Wouldn't it be in the interest of academia to have digital copies to thumb through? And what about research? Certainly it would be awesome to have all those tomes online and available to the public.

As for his degrading commentary about internet content and its subservient position towards commercialism, I flip him a hardy bird. I hate ad banners as much as the next guy but somebody's gotta pay the bills...

hilarious essay from Space.com on Star War's most annoying characters that I found extremely funny

I am sorry to have to jump to Jar-Jar's defense, but whether this article was meant to be 'hilarious' or not, anyone familiar with Joseph Campbell (or who has taken any literature analysis/appreciation courses) would have to think twice about the Gungan's role in the epic after reading this. As annoying as he was, he very well could turn out to be one of the most important characters. While I wouldn't go so far as the author did in comparing him to Luke Skywalker, I think there is definitely some real purpose besides comic relief in Jar-Jar.

IMO, the Ewoks were much more annoying as characters...but ended up being more marketable. Why? It's the fur. ;-)

That is what I think mp3 is best at, allowing you to find obscure artists and branch out from your daily dose of Top 40. Absolutely. (Check out my band on mp3.com for an earful of swank digitalia.)

Problem is, once you are discovered and signed, your record company doesn't want you on mp3 anymore because they can't make a dime off it, and they claim it hurts sales. The argument we 'pirates' are making is that making music available for the masses to check out will ensure that your fan base continues to grow. How many times have you been at the store, and a CD caught your eye, but you'd never heard of the band, none of your friends had either, and you could think of a couple other things to spend your money on than a band that could very well suck? You go to mp3.com or someplace like that and check it out, find out, hey, they rock, then you go back and buy the cd. Our buy a ticket to the show when they come to town. Or turn your friends onto the band, and they buy the cd. I just think the number of folks who WILL spend money tends to outweigh the 'cost' of people who just download it and never buy anything.
