I make my kids use firefox when they go to myspace; I also only let them access it on a system that is firewalled from the rest of the network, which they have to keep running. I figure it's good training for when they have to go off to college away from their MCSE/Linux Geek/Ex-BBS sysop dad.
I'm typing this on a HP DV8230US Laptop with a core duo T2300 CPU; it just purely and simply rocks and I hate intel, this is the first Intel chip i've owned in 12 years. together with the gig of ram and the 256mb Nvidia 7300 GPU, I think this thing would run Vista. Not that it ever will, of course. Any Win OS after Win2k sucks; took me forever to get WinXP media center off this thing.
I'm probably not getting some subtle nuance, but do not the various wireless nationwide mesh projects pretty much make this a non-issue? Sure it sucks now; the assinine laws being passed truly suck and all, but with more geographic communities able to talk to each other without using telecom infrastructure, it looks like the interweb has a chance to get back to being the unregulated freedom space it is supposed to be.
Yike. I assumed that it was sent out to everybody; from re-reading my copy, it doesn't specifically state things one way or the other. Can anyone confirm that they did NOT get a letter, and the VA has their address?
Wouldn't WGA have to be installed on my machine for that to be possible? Now if windizupdate started installing WGA without my knowledge, I could see this as a problem.
Anyone who knows the FBI crime lab knows that there were a lot of fingers crossed when they said that. I mean... Ghost? ever heard of it? If the guy who took it was mentally retarded and thought it was a etch-a-sketch, I could see them saying the data was safe with some assurance.
One point I would like to add; take a coat if it's cold out, a drink if its hot. I read about one case in Ohio recently where a woman stepped out of her house to talk to the cops; she refused to let them search her house without a warrant, so they detained her in her yard until they got a warrant. this was in february, and she didn't have a coat or shoes on, and her kids were alone in the house. she finally gave in.
So what would be the motivation on the polices part to start obeying the law? "hey, don't worry about it, the judge will just give us a slap on the wrist and a wink like last time"? It has to be driven into their rule-and-power obsessed brains (note to self; mention law enforcement experience in profile) with a sledgehammer that this sort of crap WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Public flogging sounds good.
They can turn off my copy of Win2k? wait a second... I'm thinking this only applies to that graphics and DRM add-on to Windows 2000... what was it's name again? oh yeah! Windows XP. But seriously, folks; I just bought a Media Center Laptop for $$$$; I'm going to get around this problem by never letting microsoft.com near my machine, at least not until I can figure a way to get Win2k or Debian to run all the bells and whistles.
I doubt, seriously, that I could knock down a clay at 300 meters; I would say it would be more on the line of... hitting a kite and poking holes in it.
But the point is not to damage a person; the point is to damage a very flimsy flying platform. I would estimate the percentage chance of hitting a relatively large RC plane at 300m with a single flechette to be about 30-40%; using 3 shots, i think you could hit the sucker at least once, which I think would be enough to knock it out of the air.
I would also like to restate, for the DHS viewers, that i would only do this if I spotted one over my land when my kids were in the pool; I doubt I would even use this method, as I think a bank of highly amplified lights would work better, maybe something in the 500nm range?
Several.
The one I would use for this would be my Franchi 48/al 12-gauge; used with
flechette ammo,
available at
severalplaces. Note I would never,
ever use these hunting or against anything living, even a home invader; that is
what my.40 is for.
And the Maximum effective range is 300 meters, or 328 yards, for flechette
ammo.
If you happen to be in the central Tennessee area, a demonstration could be
arranged.
However, since you don't know about the increased range availability from
shotgun sabot rounds, I would tend to think you most likely don't live in a
firearms-friendly location.
George? do your handlers KNOW that you are posting on slashdot? As a Jeep owner, I have to say that your item #3 violates my unalienable right to pursue happiness, as well as being fairly impossible because most of the summer I don't even have the top in the vicinity of the Jeep. AND... when a cop threatens you with jail time when you decline a vehicle search, it is reprehensible and an abuse of power.
...Which is why you use a shotgun firing flechette ammo; my 12 gauge will hit a target at 300 meters with sabot flechette ammo, perfect for shooting down anything snooping on my kids in the pool. Since i'm in tennessee, thats not likely to be a problem; if it ever does become one, I can see myself rigging up a BB firing RC plane, with onboard video.... damn that would be cool. and the Navy actually trained me for it. Sweet!

Valid point. I think it skirts around the issue that DRM is just downright Evil (tm 2006 microsoft/disney/bush); the entire concept of placing limits on something I own that I didn't ask for is so blatantly wrong that I'm still at a loss as to how anyone can support it.
Just nitpicking here, but... please, please don't type things like "Windows 2000 and ME"; it implies that they are somehow related, but win2k is the only worthwhile operating system MS ever released aside from DOS 6.2 putting ME and BOB in the same line, that would be OK.
I'm in Paris, TN, Pop. 10000. the nearest town which is bigger is pop. 15000 about 20 miles away; the nearest place with a Mall, BOOK STORE, starbucks, outback, etc. is Clarksville, TN which is about 1.3 hours away. if you made a circle on a map about 45 miles in diameter centered on paris, you would get 2 towns over 8000, and a bunch of wide spots in the road ranging up to pop 5000. The thing is, most of the country is like this; i was born and raised in a similar place in southern illinois, lived in places in Indiana and even California in the same situation; when a Super Wal-mart comes to town, you don't just get stuff cheaper than the local mom & pop places, you get access to goods that were not easily available before. While Wally World is Evil, from a rural point of view, which i believe is their strength, they can not be beat in their market; small business people need to realize that they can't compete, and do something that The Giant doesn't.
I hate wal-mart, but i still shop there. I don't have a viable alternative; niether do most people who live outside of a metropolitan area. If I want software, I either have to order it online, drive 1.5 hours, or go to wally world. If I want electronics outside of a TV, I either have to go to Wally world or radio shack, and I hate radio shack more than walmart. If I want ANYTHING except gasoline after 9PM, i have to go to walmart. I lived in this particular small town before wal-mart showed up (I just came back to retire), and the main casualties, retail speaking, seems to be in womens clothing stores and hardware stores. I have to drive my daughter an hour away to get her clothes that aren't exactly like everyone elses.
Society, and life in general really, changed for the worse during the reagan administration; every prez since then has just went along with the plan, not been a signifigant force for Evil (Present officials excepting). Think about it; The Drug war, The War on Personal choice, MADD, etc.

So, you had a friend who played Traveller?
Quite a few of us still do.
You do mean the WinXP downgrade, right? unless you have a intel hyperthread CPU or a 64-bit processor, XP pretty much sucks in comparison to Win2k.

Matters to me; my info might have been in the database. /. readership in general.
However, I agree. Old News, and not important to the
I believe it said on the FBI's report that it looked like the data had not been looked at.
