Maybe but a lot of people die each day. Some die serving the country, some are old, some get hit by cars, etc. From a policy stand point I would agree with Verizon's initial decision. That said they did waive the $350, but really this seems to me more like her milking her dead husband.

Let's compare the locked door/unlocked door analogy to collecting WiFi data. My parents know if there doors are locked or not unlocked. They have absolutely no fucking clue if what they transmit across there WiFi is secure or not. They assume it is, but as long as the website opens up they are blissful and ignorant to it. I'd be willing to bet that a huge majority of majority of people are in this boat. What makes what Google is doing so bad is they are driving around exploiting this. Is it illegal? I don't know. Is it morally questionable? Certainly. For a company that proclaims 'Do No Evil', sure seems a bit on the evil side guy.

Personally I don't think comparing a e-reader to an iPad is fair, thats only one function of it and probably not even the main one for most users. You can't buy 100% of the applications on any android phone. For example on my wife's Motorola Backflip she can't get Google Goggles. Sit right next to her on the same network using a different Android phone we can download it. Other applications such as Facebook and Pandora are resolution limited and won't work on certain phones. Now you can argue that its up to the developers to make applications that work across the board but perhaps it should be a requirement for getting listed on the Android store. Either way, I currently have 2 Android phones in my house and an iPhone3GS. The iPhone is the one that I use the most.

I visited one of the Elliot Lake, Ontario mines back in the early 90s. These were primarily Uranium mines and the reason for visiting was my hometown (Crandon, WI) had one of the larger zinc/copper finds in the US. My parents were in fairly respected positions in the community so Exxon/Rio Algom paid for us to go on a little trip up there and take a look at what they proposed for our town. One of the major concerns I recall walking away with was what mining did to the lake. The uranium tailings were directly deposited into Elliot Lake around the 50s and completely killed off the fish and plant life. It had taken nearly 50 years for the plants and fish to begin to recover. Needless to say we walked away not in favor of having a mine opened in our town.
