Just about every ISP has wording that would make sharing the connection against the ToS. Will they ever find out, probably not unless your neighbor is the network admin. The real concern in my opinion is the responsibility you are taking allowing a complete stranger to utilize your connection. You're the subscriber, the ISP knows who YOU are. Even if you can't legally be held accountable, I'm sure you can have a good chunk of your time wasted by having to testify in court that your Wifi was being anonymously shared.

  6. Hi on Morality of Throttling a Local ISP? · · Score: 1

First let me say that I'm in charge of managing approx 500,000 internet and voip customers for a cable isp. I do have a few small towns that fall into the size your dealing with however. Bottom line, you need more bandwidth. QOS, port blocking, throttling and the like are all "tricks" us network people have available to us but all they do is buy you some time. If my 8 years in charge of a cable isp has taught me anything, it's that usage is much closer to exponential growth than linear. I'd try to a fiber hand off into the location from a teleco. What's great about this is once it's in it's a matter of picking up the phone to scale up the bandwidth to pretty much whatever you need. From the sounds of it you could start out at something like 10mbit for the time being. Secondly, I'm also in charge of a team of network engineers. If you have concerns about the morality of what your being asked to do, it's usually perfectly acceptable to voice those concerns to your management and/or HR. After that's done I would continue with the task you were given as until further notice that's the plan of action.

I hate comments like this, they make a rather popular codec. It's not popular because of piracy, it's popular because it works well. It's like blamming the MP3 format for music piracy, before that it was casettes. If DivX/Xvid/Mp3 wasn't around piracy would exist in another format.

It's a two-way street in my opinion. Once you commit the QRcode to print it's permanent. Microsoft's approach of essentially using an index/pointer means that the content can evolve over time. For example if you happen to scan a 3 year old QRcode vs a 3 year old Microsoft Tag there is at least a chance that the Tag may still be relevant. That said, both are fking lame to me as a consumer.

They don't sell you XX MB/s. That's what a carrier sells, and which is why they charge tens of thousands of dollars a month for a rated circuit. An ISP (generally speaking) sells you a maximum possible connection with no gurantee that you will ever hit the top rated speed. It's been that way since dial-up internet first came out.

  13. Everyone wants a piece of the pie... on Bittorrent To Cause Internet Meltdown · · Score: 3, Informative

...but nobody wants to pay for it. It's been said many, many, many, times before but the average user doesn't have any concept how much bandwidth costs for the circuit to a carrier alone, much less the hardware required to light it. I work with carrier-level Cisco gear, a single linecard alone is in the 50k price range. A single router I work with has 8 of those. It takes at least 2 of those routers to handle a few small to medium size towns, (30k subscribers). That's just the price to give you a connection back to the local building, of course I'm omitting the cost of the wiring to your home, the equipment required to power it, etc, etc. We haven't even discussed how much the transport out to the internet begins to cost. I think a lot of ISP's are beginning to see that it's probably a failing business model, and because of that they are making some-what drastic changes to try and make it sucessful. Things like bittorrent, youtube, etc are what make the web truely great, but at the same time they very well could be the downfall in the current state of the internet. You of course could always get your own internet circuit but even a T1 will be at least $300 per month + construction costs and appropriate gear to utilize it.

  18. Re:Quick, Change your MAC! on Locate Any WiFi Router By Its MAC Address · · Score: 3, Interesting

While I can't speak specifically for Comcast, most cable companies do not use the CPE mac address. The cable modem's HFC mac address is what it used to authorize service. What can and likely is done is that a limit is set on the number of CPE ip addresses that can be handed out (typically your public ip address). Some cable companies set this to 1. The CMTS maintains a table called the cable host which has these entries and they are typically cleared by rebooting the cable modem. If that doesn't work it may need to be manually cleared from the cmts.
