I would like to put our rotting stock pile of nukes to good use finally. In fact, it would be beneficial if all countries launch all of their nukes at the same time to obliterate this mofo. Kill two birds with one stone: 1) giant asteroid 2) nuclear weapons. Sounds idealistic, but it'd be cool.

Or, maybe this guy doesn't even know the original poster (me) or how he feels about non-free software. I use a lot of non-free software and I think that both open-source and closed-source software have their advantages and disadvantages. In this case, it is simply a matter of PERSONAL PREFERENCE that I like PNG over JPEG. I am not trying to further a 'linux hippie' open-source movement or help to foster it in any way.
I love it when people assume stuff about you that isn't true.
sarcasm... i meant phone number that your average joe can actually call. for those prices, I can safely say that they don't have a support phone number.
I would really like to know who the moderator is that marked me as flamebait? If someone could explain to me how this is flamebait, I would appreciate it and probably shut up. He must not like the title, 'Holy Shit'. Must be a religious nut or something. I believe I am being unjustly targeted by angry moderators that have nothing better to do than award their buddies karma points and deprive people like me of them. Either that or this guy just wanted to piss some negative ones away and I got caught in the crossfire.
Nevermind the fact that you, like most other Linux hippies, are in denial of widespread adaption of proprietary formats. MP3? No! Ogg! Flash? No! SVG (or whatever it is)! GIF? No! PNG!
The hell you say! I use different technologies when certain situations call for them. I am not open-source only and a 'linux hippie'. I am far from that. I just happen to prefer png to jpg. Plain and fucking simple. Its assholes like you that turn this into a complete idiological debate and blow things out of proportion. I like PNG over JPEG. It doesnt make me a linux hippie, a communist, or a fucking weirdo. And you were modded up... lol.
So? I could care less about JPEG anyway. PNG is a lot better. Better compression and better image quality. If JPEG wants to get itself into legal shit then it's its' own business. My wallpapers and my website images are all PNG and thats the way it will stay.
I have used both Mandrake 8.2 and SuSE 8.0 and I would have to say that Suse 8 is far superior. They came out at relatively the same time so you would expect them to be very similar. Nope. Mandrake 8.2 installed the ide-scsi module for my cd burner, but at the same time, slapped together some shitty version of Xcdroast thus killing my ability to burn CDs without reinstalling xcdroast myself. Suse 8, on the other hand, configured the burner (modprobe ide-scsi) and all of the software (xcdroast, koncd, gcombust) worked right after the install. Another thing: NVIDIA drivers. Mandrake 8.2 does not let you know that you are using the crappy open sourced NVIDIA drivers while Suse not only informs you of this, but will download them and install them for you correctly, configure X with GLX support, and get you going. The sound support, although supposedly the same thing, sucks on Mandrake as opposed to Suse. On suse, i could almost go without the commercial oss drivers (if it werent for the fact that i already owned the license). These are my trials and tribulations. Take them as you will as I know we all have different experiences.
Seeing as most large web sites don't serve their database off of their web server, I don't think this would be a problem. The code for the web page is served off of the server with that funky two-headed drive. Its read only to the internet, but the dynamic content, for instance user posts here on slashdot, are retreived and stored on a separate, secure db server. Your PHP, ASP, whatever, will call SQL queries to that server and not 'localhost' like (un)usual. Read the original posting. It pretty much states this already with the script kiddes vs. real hackers statement.
I wonder if this takes into account people like me who rarely buy any CDs? Yeah, I download some songs but I hardly ever buy the CDs simply because most of the bands now adays suck and only put out maybe one decent song. They aren't losing any money because I wouldn't have bought the CD in the first place. Now, the way I support my favorite artists is by going to their concerts because most of the money generated goes to them and not the RIAA. Just a thought.
I did my part. Just bought SuSE linux 8.0 pro last week. 80 bucks. It was WORTH IT! I agree with you wholeheartedly that our Linux companies need our support and help in order to stay in business. I have purchased SuSE 7.1 (also excellent distro), mandrake 7.1, and the aforementioned suse 8. I believe the only way we will get more hardware/software support is if we do this.
"I don't like feigning ignorance. I prefer to violate stupid and nearly unenforcable corporate laws, and to do so with malice."
Here here! I used to do it like that. Everytime I burned a CD, I put a wicked grin on my face and thought "I love breaking stupid ass laws". But now, with all of these 'informants' springing up because of that stupid citizen's corps, i wouldn't be suprised if we did start getting busted for shit like that.
The thing about companies like microsoft, is that they have this evaluation thing with their software. They get a bunch of joe blow users to check it out and see if they can pick it up really quick. Then they make adjustments to the UI according to the way these people pick this crap up or bitch about it. They also hire people that make the design decisions from a joe user standpoint. If the linux community really wants linux to thrive as a desktop OS (it would be nice due to the support form other vendors that it would bring, but I could really care less at this point) we will need to implement something similar. Get some joe idiots (joe is a good first name for this example:) to sit down and point out the things that they don't like and either fix it, or create a new desktop that is for the true computer idiot. we need feedback from even the lowest of morons because windows can easily be used by one of them. Unless you are her.
I agree with you except on one point: the choice of browsers. Users don't need choice. They want one thing. The best bet is to put the latest release of netscape on there because every idiot in the world knows what that is (and its basically mozilla, for the most part). Either that or leave the choice as konqueror since it would be integrated into the common UI and give the users that explorer-esque feel that they are all used to.
What strange DMCA-ridden world is this that I've suddenly fallen in to? It's dark in here.
I find it good just to feign ignorance on the part of DMCA law. I have probably broken it many times since its inception (remember probably, cuz i don't really know. but, its more than likely), however, I really don't pay attention nor do I care to. If it were up to them, none of us would have 'puters or any sort of hardware in the first place. Some shit about national security...
I have tried most of those and have found that SuSE 8.0 is actually easier for me. Everything comes out of the install actually working correctly (cd burners, hardware acceleration, sound cards, etc.). Mandrake 8.2 was nice, but they shipped a crappy version of XCDRoast and you had to do some stuff to get it working that wasn't very user friendly.

Did I mention that the moderators can go straight to hell? No? Well, you all can go straight to hell.
Microsoft actually has a support phone number? I wonder how much that costs per incident.

Re-read my post. I didn't say that it all sucks. Just most of it. How do you people get modded up? I think the moderators don't like me or something.

This whole citizen corps thing is reminding me of the informants of nazi-germany. its frightening.

Why would you do that? Christ A, like 40x isn't fast enough... man, I got a 16x burner and it still does the job.
I thought that journalized file systems, ext3, JFS, Reiser, XFS, already did this. They are all, pretty much, linux standards, so to speak.
