ANSI C??? Are you out of your mind? Yeah, hello world! and mindless loops work fine when you cross compile. But what about when you want to program in GUI environments? Yeah, I have heard of wxWindows, but that is not ANSI C. What about coding for network protocols? Winsock is similar but almost completely different when it comes to coding than the BSD sockets or Linux sockets. So yeah, if you think in terms of simple, calculate-this-for-me ANSI programs, then you are right. But if you wanna write something USEFUL, no. Also, advantages for .NET: hmmmmm, you can program the same thing in one of 50 gazillion different languages. If Mono comes through, as long as i don't use pInvoke, my Linux mono programs will work exactly the same way, no modification, with network calls and all, on a Windows .Net machine. I see a shitload of possibilities with this. Don't even get me started on the corporate IT ramifications.

It seems that games these days have awesome graphics but lack really good game play like the games of yesteryears. This is probably because game companies are focused on bedazzling all of these gamers with the fancy gfx, fog, lighting, yadda yadda yadda. Games can benefit from this new optical technology by keeping graphics the same (or better) as they are now and focusing more on game play by increasing level sizes and adding more content to make the game feel dynamic instead of for instance, every time you go through a level, its the same dudes in the same places waiting to be shot at. I mean, it would be great if there was a fps that one would want to play over and over just because the plot and storyline were quasi-dynamic. That would be cool. Ait, i'm done.

They haven't cared about the people. In fact, even after Sept. 11th they didn't care about the people. They used it for a politcal agenda. 'Vote for us in 2004, we worked hard after 9-11 to defeat terrorists.' Not to mention throw away our rights, walk on our constitution and alienate our public. Democrats and republicans alike are the slime of the earth. You have your right wing, christian coalition, business banging, revenue generating, self serving machine running one half of the government and then you have your left wing, give all of our tax money to everyone who is not a citizen, expand the size of our already goliath bureauocracy, exploit the services, whine bitch and complain, sue sue sue, ACLU(another sue) lovers running the other half. Both are linked by one common thread: they are both owned by a couple individuals/corporations with a lot of money. We all know that the rich like to ride the wave of their congressional support. For how many years has enron gotten away with fucking with its accounting? Now look at how many people lost their jobs because of someone's greed. What did the government want to do about that? Our courageous, terrorist-fighting madman of a prez. wanted it forgotten real quick. HM, I wonder why? Only when a company that has no relation to him or his administration falls (worldcom) does he take action and look ridiculous in the process.

In short, our government, if placed in the right hands would work correctly. However, since power corrupts, we have consistently placed losers to rule us, losers who will take anything and everything from you, even the clothes off your back, if it makes them happier for at least one more moment. With the exception of maybe John McCain (who I don't consider to be a republican as he always disagrees with his own party), you have no one in power that cares about you. Just remember that.

Wow, its nice to see that slashdot is no longer filled with open-minded, intelligent individuals. It is now populated with bigots who like to impress others with their superior intellects and mastery of everything over your common, ordinary person. I reply not only to you, but to those that sit at their computers and insult these 'rednecks' as you like to call them. In my opinion, this displays an utter lack of maturity and makes me question the integrity of those posting on this site. Yes, the rednecks have ways which are strange to 'y'all', but this is no reason to treat them as if they are a backward group of ignorant morons whose socio-economic status has indefinitely limited them to shopping at such stores as Wal-Mart. Has anyone ever told you that stereotyping is a BAD thing? What's funny is how the stereotypical Slashdot hacker (coder, not crackers) broils when they get word that the government has stereotyped them into the very group (crackers) that they wholeheartedly detest and in most cases, aren't a part of. I can only laugh at such hipocrisy. I am a college student, not a 'redneck', and I shop at Wal-Mart simply because after auto insurance, tuition, books, and my residence is paid off, I simply don't have the time nor the money to shop at the Epicure for my tv diners and 12 packs of Mt. Dew. The day that I can join the crowd of 1337 /.ers that can afford to, maybe I will. Also, I played deer hunter at one time simply because I thought it was kinda cool for a minute. Does this make me a backwoods, green-tooth/no-tooth, spawn of incestual relations? I hardly think so.

They could be helping with KDE, GNOME, or kernel dev. However, producing the M$ killer is obviously not their intent. They are just working on a project that they are interested in and are just saying hey, if you wanna use it, use it, if you don't, thats fine. In my opinion, it is best that these hackers stay out of the OS war so they can focus on producing a fine product/program. The consumer (user) will fight the wars through the final decision they make over which of these choices will be running on their desktop.

But my friends, I ask you this: which one of these instant messanger gimmicks can give you access to all of the warez, pr0n, and movies you could ever want? IRC as a means of communication is still better than any messanger, in my book. And its double feature, as many of my not-so-computer-literate friends are finding out, as a file-sharing client, still pulls through for me more times out of 10 than any of these crappy ones we have now.
