  1. Re:None on Best website statistics package? · · Score: 1

Let me just start by saying, I'm no expert on web statistics. But, i am a web developer.

    Assuming that I:

    * Only care about PEOPLE (not robots) visiting my site
    * Use a javascript tracker
    * Account for a margin of error (Only 99% of traffic to my sites use JS)

How can my statistics be scewed by cacheing, as the individual people will still report statistics by JS regardless of the cache. Plus you can get a good measure of stat scewedness by comparing JS tracking with log analyzing.

Anyways, I'm of the camp that stats may not be fully accurate but they're very usefull.

  2. BBC Reboot on Slashdot CSS Redesign Contest · · Score: 3, Interesting

A lot of people seem to be criticizing CmdrTaco ethically for holding this competition. I personally don't see it as an issue, but its always interesting what other people's opinions are. BBC is holding a very similar competition (http://open.bbc.co.uk/reboot/). They received a lot of the same negative comments from people that this is like getting a $10,000 job done for half the price with twice the creative control. However these people did not realize the winner would only be showcased for one day and retained complete intellectual property of the design. BBC had this to say about it: "I would completely agree with jay that we would be ripping people off if we were going to turn entries submitted into the final homepage design. But that's not the objective of this competition." Interesting read at any rate, and very relevant to peoples criticisms.

  3. Re:Get Trac on Personal Ticket Tracking System for Admins? · · Score: 1

I don't know how you could call TRAC easy to set up. Thier install instructions are neolithic, unless your a linux guru. Its got so many requirments that have to be instaled in a certain order with certain compile flags or you have to start over from the begining.

Which isn't to say i don't think TRAC is one of if not the best bug tracking solution out there. I use it every day extensivly, but its not for the faint of heart.

Anything you need root access and hours of time to install probably not the simple bug tracking solution this person is looking for.

  4. PmWiki on Personal Ticket Tracking System for Admins? · · Score: 1

I had this same problem recently and came up with PmWiki's bug tracking solution. Small, Wiki based, nice looking. Slightly complicated to set up but not anything like TRAC (I recently set this up and it was a nightmare). http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/Cookbook/PITS In the comments thread there are some updated versions that include decent installation instructions. You can check out my installation of it here: http://mcquay.org/bugs/ Hope this helps.

This whole thing is pretty interesting.

The reason you wont see any major change in traffic is that these operations dont actually take down any extablished servers.

The feds just set up 2gbit server and convince groups to affil on them and then bust all of the FEDS OWN users. The reason you seen so much traffic drop with Operation fast link is that the REAL scene sites were scared and shut down temporarily, until everyone realized that the only sites that got taken down were in fact run by the FEDS.

I assume that the idea is that the info on the siezed computers can be used to take down other top sites, but the fact of the matter is that the world's largest most repsected top sites are now located in countries that the US gov cannot get to, even if they had the info on them.

    The scene will never die

    At least thats my opinion,

Interestingly enough this somewhat relevant to what I do for a living right now. I work for an outgoing call center in the financial industry.

Often when we buy lists of "leads" from Indian call centers they have very compromising data in them such as social insurance numbers, exact debt figures, etc. I often wonder where this information is really coming from.

Also did i mention that we pay .08$ per "lead".

I find it very useful to be able to navigate a deep directory structure in a efficient manner and then drop back to command line seamlessly.

The problem i see with honey pots is that i think it would be pretty unlikly to actually catch anyone with something like this. All of the people that i know that are involved in hacking large amounts of servers are very varefull about security. Using a contolled outside shell account to set up the scan on another hacked box. Systems like this may be good for catching people that are not serious about it and mabey watching trends and getting the tools that people use. But look at efnet the big channels there have hundreds of hacked edu's totally unconnected to any of the ops. You'd think if it was easy to tell who was doing it it would be done already.
