Dialup is still the only alternative for a lot of people. For some who generally only want e-mail and the occasional web research it's actually okay. I love my 20mbps cable connection but really if it was gone I'd probably just go back to having a life.
Well heck, if you want desirable first run movies there is always pirate bay. I have downloaded 4 of those "desirable first run movies" and I gotta tell you I'd never have paid for them. I'm sorry I wasted the bandwidth to download them in the first place. They're off the hard drive now. In all reality there are so few movies worth paying for nowadays. CGI and stunts have replace dialogue and acting. I remember laughing at fart jokes, when I was in the fourth grade. That's the level humor is at in hollywood now.
I'm not all crybaby. I have a nasty redneck side and things like you bring it out in me. I think that's why I despise you so, you make me feel bad about having the evil part of me come out. I don't like you and if you were gone I doubt anyone would miss you. Have a nice day.:)
That's sad. Truly sad. I have trouble even conceiving that. My children and now my grandchildren are treasures. My only regrets in life were the times I feel like I failed them. I made trips to school many, many times to talk with teachers and struggled so hard with my oldest because she lacked motivation. I wish I had done better even though she turned out well but you always feel like you could have done more. To think that parents don't care about their children's future seems impossible to believe even though I know it happens. Surely it can't be that pervasive.
This is what comes from tying performance to pay. I know schools here are awarded more money from the state as well as teacher performance bonuses for better scores on standardized tests. It's had this kind of push here as well. Lots of schools have even been caught cheating to get their scores up. Desperation brings on this kind of craziness.
God forbid you should feel bad about being a dickhead. You know, some people really are stupid, or at least not as smart as you think you are. Some people put forth effort yet fail to achieve. How about those people? Should they be humiliated? Maybe if you have a child and he's a difficult one to potty train you'd make him walk around with a diaper on his head to motivate him?
I'm always amazed that people think the schools should raise children. It's the parents responsibility to motivate their children, after all, every child is different and what will motivate one child may well destroy another one's desire to learn at all. This kind of crap has no place in a school system where the struggle for acceptance from your peers is already a vicious war. Just what we need more nastiness but from those supposedly there to provide support and help. How about mandatory study hall where they could actually spend time with their lessons with teachers available to help? How about some Positive means of providing motivation instead on always pounding on people who obviously have problems? Teen suicide rates not high enough for you?
Isn't motivating children their parents job? I'm saddened that they even came up with an idea like this. Public humiliation is more likely to destroy motivation than provide it.
That's nice, the kids play with tablets and laptops. So what? You may not know this but young people aren't the only market. There are corporations, stores, small businesses, all kinds of people from all walks of life have computers. I've got 3 laptops, 1 tablet (that I don't use), and 2 tower systems actually up and running. I'm not counting all the old stuff I've got mothballed here like my Amiga 3000. I use my D630 primarily and my wife uses her iBook mostly but my tower does the heavy lifting when I do video work. It's got the bad ass quad core and 8 gigs of ram that cost me almost 600 dollars to build. I could buy a laptop that has all the same stuff for 1800 dollars but why? If I want a new video card I pop one in. I'm considering a second card so I can add more capability and another monitor. It's trivial to upgrade and repair. I don't need or want that power in a laptop. I want cool running and long battery life in a laptop. If I spent nearly 2 grand on a laptop I'd live in terror if I took it anywhere. My old D630 on the other hand, while I love it, is nearly worthless to steal. I have a tablet I picked up to play with it, it's a gentouch piece of junk so maybe a poor representative of the class but while it's kind of neat I'd hate to be stuck with that instead of a laptop.
Not everyone is an enthusiast. Some people just want to play. I like open source but really how open is the Thrive? Can I install debian or even Meego on it? If I can't then it's a semi-open system at best. If I can wipe windows off my laptop and install linux on it then I should be able to on my tablet shouldn't I?
Don't get carried away. Desktops are not dead and aren't going away. Pads, Laptops and Desktops all serve different purposes. When you need the cpu power, massive ram and expansion capabilities of a tower a pad isn't going to cut it.
This is not a "right wing" spin machine. As I said before, I agree with investment in Green Energy alternatives. I have no problem at all with trying to reduce dependence on foreign oil and it's associated problems. The problem I have is how money gets doled out in huge chunks that disappear. I'm highly skeptical that there is no fraud involved in Solyndra but you have a point that the investigation is not concluded. Regardless it seems to me that instead of throwing money out in such a way it would be better to invest by actually using the products. In this manner all parties benefit. The companies sell product showing a profit which encourages more private investors to start up companies doing similar products. The government actually gets a product that helps reduce their use of "bad" energy and additionally can save them money in the long run. Prices drop due to higher volume production that makes solar and other green power alternatives available to a wider market. The biggest problem with Solar in particular is the huge upfront costs. I'd like to see big tax breaks for home owners that install panels. In this way the money gets spread out and a wider group of people benefit instead of the one company that got the big blank check that disappeared. Call that right wing if you want, I call it common sense. Amazing how when tax payers like me bitch about taking it in the ass from these guys we get labeled right wingers.
Assume the worst.

Not true. The feedback from the customers is what hit the stock price and angered the stock holders. So yes it was due to customer feedback.
Hey, but I'll still have you. ;)

The feds are pretty damn good at collecting taxes. It's the one thing they really try to get right. Gotta hand it to 'em.
We never get rid of taxes, we just add more, and more, and more........
Nevada has Las Vegas. The feds need Nevada more than Nevada needs them.
They need to put you in charge of that school system. I've already posted on this topic or I would mod you up. Most intelligent post I've seen so far.
That would require effort. They chose the path that left it all up to the kids.

Next thing you know they'll be putting them in stocks.

I think that's the one thing I don't like about the iPhone, they need a screen for us old farts. I can't see shit on a screen smaller that 4 inches.

If you define losing by making gobs of money then Apple has clearly failed.
That can't hurt. There is a reason marketers make big bucks. Still, if you want to maintain sales you have to deliver value.
Of for crying out loud. Don't bring the Constitution into this. Now they'll call you a fox news tea party neo-con corporation loving fascist.
