  1. Oh come on on Linus Is A Hero · · Score: 1, Flamebait

Hero as a term is used far to widely nowadays. Linux is a pretty cool guy for doing what he has, but let's face facts here. It's just software, not the cure for cancer.

RMS got recomended? The guy belongs in a looney bin, not on a list of hero nominees. Any good works RMS has done or continues to do are far outwieghed by his mental disorders. The guy has no respect for anyone or anything that doesn't believe as he does. There was a term for such a person back in the 40's, they called them Nazi's.

If anyone in the comp industry deserves to be called a hero it's Woz for his work with kids and charity groups.

  3. email as we know it is the problem on ISP Chief on Spam · · Score: 4, Interesting

Lets face it, SMTP as well as POP3 and IMAP are old protocols. They came to be when networks were small and more trusted. The fact that 99% of ISP's use the email account as the service provider account is clearly insecure. Email travels around in clear text, passwords and all. This is how most crackers get into networks, by simply sniffing out the name and password of email accounts.

Email needs a massive overhaul like the one telnet has gotten. Telnet is obsolete, replaced by SSH. FTP is replaced by SFTP and SCP.

Email needs to be cleaned up, secured and as easy to use as it is today. Encrypting it helps, but you also need to design the protocol so that headers can't be faked. You need to design anti spam into it from the beginning. Anything we do to SMTP now is just a hack on a very old outdated protocol.

Oh and yes I know what I'm talking about, I've run several nationwide mail systems for two ISP's. It's a nightmare I wouldn't wish on an enemy.

Certain colors do have effects on you. Why are all padded cells white? It's calming.

Why are most hallways tope? It's soothing.

Bright colors give us an "open" feel in rooms while dark ones close us in.

Yellow is an alerting color, which is why it's used in stop lights, as is red. Colors do effect us in certain ways.

Example, drunk driver sees cop car on the side of the road with it's red blinking lights. Drunk driver can't remove focus from them and crashes into cop car. It happens almost every day in the U.S. Is it because of the color of the lights? Blue lights have proven to have a different effect. Maybe it's just that their flashing? Flashing blue lights had a different effect.

Anyway, the guy seems like a crack pot, but colors can effect us in minimal ways. Very minimal however.

Tinitus is a mystery to us. Docotrs have theories and evidence but they honestly don't know why some people get it in certain instances while others do not.

Here is an example. My mothers family when she was young went to a war memorial where a cannon was fired several times. From that day on due to the extreme noise my mother has had tinitus. It comes and goes and is rather mild most of the time.

I however am a musician and have been for 14 years. I play Bass and do so at extremely loud decibals at times yet have no problem with tinitus.

Tinitus has been tied to thing such as white noise, like a ceiling fan or running water. It has also been tied to ruptured ear drums as well as exposure to short but intense exposure to load noise. It has further been tied to deep sea divers such as Navy SEALs where they literally hear nothing but the pressure itself causes it.

Tinitus is a bit like cancer in this way. We know the symptoms, we have treatments and we can name multiple causes.

It's not impossible this guy is correct, it's unlikely as you stated but not impossible. As a musician his theory doesn't make much sense to me but that doesn't mean I'll rule it out.

Even the menu system seems snappier with no delay in the opening drop down menu. Moss scroll around the map is snappier with no delays.

If I had to label a percentage on it I would say 15%, but you will likely see more improvement on lower end systems. Mine was great to begin with but now it's awesome.

I have had no trouble with email or webspace but there is a constant nagging problem well documented on their support forums in regards the the backup software. It's basically been dead in the water for 90% of the users for the last 2 months. You can still backup to cd's dvd's etc but backing up to iDisk fails with an "iDisk is unreachable" error.

It's gotten really annoying, Apple has even stated it's fixed but the complaints keep rolling in. It worked fine for me until about 2 weeks ago, then it just stopped altogether.

The backup software sucks in general but seeing as how I paud 100$ for my .Mac I do expect everything to work. The 2 weeks I have been down from backup is unacceptable to me and 2 months + for others is also quite bad.

I'm also disappointed that Apple hasn't delivered on the promise of new features it made when launching .Mac. We were told we would see constant updates and improvements but there hasn't been so much as an added template for the homepage creation wizard.

All in all i think .Mac is a failure. They aren't handling it professionally. Very poor support i.e. no phone number to call for help. No added features. The sign up rate has been slow, I'm the only person I know personally with an account.

I think Apple is going to learn this one the hard way. They just aren't listening to what customers want. You really don't get what you pay for with this service. I could get the same thing for 10 bucks a month from a webhost with added php and cgi support.

I doubt I'll renew my reg next year. They just haven't made due on the hype.

The Disney theme parks are a joke now too. Way over priced, played out, and don't even get me started on the gang activity in the L.A. one close to where I live.

Now maybe it'll be EA, not likely, but it will be someone. The theme parks are rare, I mean their are only TWO in the US. Six Flags has them beat in this department although they suffer the same problems.

The only place Disney has a strangle hold on is cartoons and movies. The Disney channel is great for kids too. If only Hannah/Barberra were still around, maybe that would change.

My dad has a Mitsubishi 36 inch TV that he bought close to 14 years ago. It still works like a champ, no problems at all. I've got a 3 year old 36 inch Sony that I'm already seeing problems with.

I can't say exactly why this is happening, but I can venture some guesses. The quick buck is killing our economy. Everyone wants that easy money. No one takes pride in their products and builds them to last.

I recently looked at the feature lists of some home stereo equipment and was shocked. Most of the stuff on your average home stereo will never be used but you can't find simpler equipment. Additionally we are still using some pretty ugly wiring schemes for home audio. The back of my home theatre setup is insane! I have wires everywhere and while I'm usually good at labeling them, it's still a nightmare to work with.

No one is making these things better. They are making them cheaper and more complex. This goes against what people actually want. Features are nice, yes, but not at the expense of quality and ease of use.

No one deserves 25 million? Thats the most presumptious crap I ever heard.

These actors/actresses spend months away from family and friends on shoots, they spend decades learning their trade (anthony hopkins for an example). They deal with constant press pressure, they have MAJOR expenses in the form of security gaurds because of death threats and stalkers.

Mel also produces and directs most of the movies he is in.

These people deserve the money a hell of a lot more than the fat cat do nothing all day CEO's of HP and WorldCom who cook the books and take 5 hour lunches every day to shoot the shit with other crooked execs.

The elitists are those who claim they deserve the cash more than the ones doing all the work. Sitting in front of a typewritter all day is hardly grueling labor. Guys like Mel do their own stunt work, they do lots of physical acting, tons of travel not to mention the extremely hard work they are put through in promoting the movie.

You sir are the one who knows nothing about the film industry. Scripts are a dime a dozen. There are only so many ways you can tell the same story, but acting them out is a far more intricate and challenging proffession.

Good actors save films. There are plenty of badly written movies saved entirely by the cast, look at the majority of the Star Trek movies for this. Look at Ransom starring Mel Gibson. I could give you a list as long as my arm, but I'm pretty sure it still wouldn't convince an elitist prick like you.

    Now take a walk.
