(From the article:
Proponents of open source software for governments say the code is more bug-resistant and more secure - as well as saving huge amounts of money thanks to avoiding being locked into a single company's licensing fees.)
A few months ago I bought a shitload of CD's that I already had as mp3's on my hard drive. Since most of them were quite old and not that popular I couldn't have heard them anywhere else (They don't play a lot of old warp records' stuff on MTV;-). I downloaded a few mp3's using LimeWire and I was hooked. I just had to get those CD's, if only to support the artists who made them.
But then on the other hand I test drive games before buying by getting the warez version first... (most 1337 D3wD5 just settle for the warez).
Larry McVoy: I was an Art History major specializing in Greek art, pottery and sculpture, when I figured out that was really cool but not going to support me.
Am I the only one who managed to read that as Geek art?;-)
This new type of memory won't eliminate the need of rebooting.
If your OS happens to crash, you'll still have to wait for it to re-initalize itself, i.e. reboot. With this new memory you just don't have to do it every time you switch your computer off and back on.
And of course they are going to charge for StarOffice. That's why they've made the investment of their time and resources in it in the first place. Did you think Sun is paying their programmers with bugfixes received from the community? - Nope, you need £$ for that. There's nothing wrong in trying to make a living.
StarOffice is (almost) free as in speech (since you can get almost the same code distributed with OpenOffice), not free as in beer. I respect Sun for trying to make money with OSS, despite freeloaders such as yourself.

"It would really make my day if there was a way to install KDE with a single command."
