-The NRA (National Rifle Assosiation) is all about the peoples rights I'll bet they would fight with us on this violation of our first ammendment rights to free speach, and most of their support base comes from people who believe in individual liberties!
-The AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) is a HUGE base of politically educated, moneyed (having money) people, most of whom have fought in wars for our freedom and right to complain about it on just such a forum as this, to say that they do not care/can't learn what we are talking ablout is to not give enough credit to the generations that invented the Computer, A-Bomb, Fought for integration of minority races, and to this day can effect the outcome of elections (do you really think the elderly in Broward county didn't know who they were voting for? how many times have they voted using those same ballots?)
-The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Loves a good fight they love to fight for the constitutionally protected rights of others, and have a long and glorious history of being patriotic beyond reproach!
We need to get these groups informed about our side of these issues. forget about forming our own groups, we need established, respected, informed activists working on these issues with us because otherwise, all congress is going to see is a bunch of criminal hackers or some geek with Spock ears... I know this isn't truly what there is, but that's all they'll see
Of course, if all else fails, we can alwaus move to Rio De Janeiro to do our geek thing in peace...
they know english, they throw great parties, and they have a great climate... why aren't we there already?
with the minds and talents of the combined/. readers, we should be able to do something that will make the DMCA obsolete.
Q: What will we do?
A: Code, that's what we are good at right? We find some way of coding out of relevance every law they try to put in our way. If we are going to be effective politically we must find a way of not breaking the law but completely circumventing it.
The Whole of the readership here on/. should be able to out think the polititians (at least ablout technology) and if we can't at least try, then we don't deserve to have the rights they are taking away.
I agree with you wholeheartedly, I use Linux on a fileserver/firewall, Windows 2000 pro on two workstations, Mac OSX on another, and another copy of Linux (RedHat 7.3 if you are counting) and they all have their strengths.
I am a fairly new Linux user and while my use of it isn't what you would call great (read: can't use it for shit) it was easy to install.
I am a seasoned windows user and not only don't my windows machines crash (like once in the two years i've had this setup) but they do things easier a lot of the time. BTW, I have no trouble installing win2k if i need to either.
I am proficient at OSX but not what you might call a 'power user' however, when it comes to multimedia Mac has Linux and Windows both by the short curlies...
Let's face it people, each operating system is good in its own right and there are simply things
that they do better and worse than the competition.
NOW LETS QUIT SQUABBLING ABOUT WHICH ONE IS BEST AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET LINUX INTO THE MAINSTREAM!
Order, for the purposes of this discussion, was yes at it's most bountiful 15 billion years ago.
As the universe so long ago was virtually a void, with no mass, matter, or movement, it does stand to reason that it was more ordered.
As opposed to the wildly expanding, colliding, burning, birthing, and dying that it's doing now...
Next time you want to dispute somebodys statement, TRY to take it in the meaning the author implied (not the meaning in your mind) Aside from that, i'm not posting my opinion because it's almost sure to start a flame war.
GNU/Linux $0/computer...
did you ever think about how much it would cost to get everyone that will be using these systems trained to the level of competence they already have on windows?
I'll bet it will cost a good deal more that the "$100/computer $1000/vote"
that you are so concerned with.
think about it... in training, you get paid your regular wage, but you aren't doing any work. that would work out to many millions of dollars in lost productivity time, sure, the potential benefits are great, but think about all of the other collateral benefits/expenses as well...
i'm a very new (and i stress VERY new) Linux user, i took the time out and asked around which would be the best for me, bought a copy of RedHat 7.3, and still can't do shit...nothing i can't do on my windows machine, don't get me wrong, i like the idea of open source, but if it is difficult to use, people aren't going to want to use it. and lets face it, the people that the state hires aren't geeks and in a lot of cases, they are fresh from the grind of school where (surprise!) they used windows computers! these people need a more user friendly UI if Linux will ever get off the geek platforms and into the main commercial usage arenas. just make them use macintosh if you are so worried about M$ getting your tax dollars
at least that's easy to use.
(BTW, No, I hate macintosh, but it has it's uses)
That's where our *good* American people can exercise their 'Right to Own and Bear Arms'... We are expected by constitutional dictate to change the government when we don't like it. We are allowed (again, by the constitution) to defend ourselves from harm whether it comes from a person, group, OR OUR GOVERNMENT! Our constitution also tells us that when the government becomes too unweildy or has outgrown its usefulness we thould take it down and build another one. I'll bet these idiots that complain about the gov. don't even realise that we are already on our second government (Articles of the Confederation? Anyone??) if the Gov. comes knocking on my door because of my race, religion, color, etc... I for one will resist any attempt to jail, kill, deport me to the best of my ability. If they KILL ME for it, at least I will have been exercising MY RIGHT to do so and maybe others will get the message. There is no reason to lie down and let things happen to you in this country, and we have the bill of rights to back up the idea that we can make a difference. There used to be a time when men would happily lay down their lives for the greater good, no bickering about how they weren't getting paid for it, no wishing somebody else would do it, they did it. We should to.
Bear in mind also that THE FACT THAT 2.45 Ghz is the covalent water bond is precisely why microwaves operate on that frequency! THEY SPEED UP THE WATER MOLECULES IN FOOD IN ORDER TO HEAT IT!
I am a Ham (Callsign W7MB if you care) and in my experience, more often than not, it is the device recieving the interferance that is the problem.
You tell me, which is more plausable?
(1) My $3000, highly specialised Ham Radio system is causing interferance? or...
(2) Your $150, Mass produced TV is recieving stuff it wasn't meant to?
Admittedly, this is not always the case, but also in my experience, a Ham is 10 times more likely to be willing to go purchase the neccessary filters if he is causing the interferance than an average person is to go get the filter to keep said interferance out of the equipment that is pulling in more than it's designed to.
BTW: I have purchased filters (without compensation) for numerous people whose equipment was faulty, for two reasons... first and foremost because it isn't their fault they bought faulty equipment, and secondly, because Hams try very hard to keep up the excellent record of public action and responsibility that we have.
Anyone who cares can go look at http://www.arrl.org/ to find out all kinds of good info about the ham radio population and the public services we provide.
IF you believe the stuff about IQ tests being an accurate test of intelligence... The median IS the average. Theoretically in any group of prople you take the IQ test scores, average them and call it 100, the scale is from 0-200 on a theoretical bell-curve. The difference is, we have done the test so many times, we think we already know where '100' is. But I digress... I wholeheartedly agree with these posts about 'it shouldn't be illegal to change that which i have bought legally' otherwise, OEMs could say we couldn't ever change the software on a computer because, in effect, doing so makes it a different machine... To my way of thinking, that is a very frightening (inevitable) legal precident to set...

WRITE CODE THAT ISN'T ILLEGAL YET!
We don't have to break the law, we just have to write code that they haven't written laws about yet.
