I never liked that old vs new video.
The escort is built for rally not circuit racing, while the RS was shown by topgear in an earlier episode to be a track stormer that was useless in the real world (with bumps).
the escort has soft shocks and dirt tyres, the RS has track tyres (read massive advantage) and track spring/shocks. The same goes for the Audi vs Mitsi test. Either suit both cars for rally and or both cars for road.
If it were the 60's and the race was on that circuit the crew would have refitted the car for circuit racing.
and the GT40 is a new car..
Unfortunatly its a poor test.
Im sure there are plenty of other uses but with regards to car paint. Imagine if the paint turned bright Red on a dark wet winters day/night, it would be safer because its easily seen. But then on a hot summers day its a cool looking black or whatever takes your fancy. Another small but helpfull safety asset. Grey cars are hardest to see an therefore most likely hit.
I too have a floppy in my PC for emrgencies. However, I dont think in an emergency it will be me who needs the floppy. I think the situation will be someone giving me a floppy. Like my mum asking me to email the CV she just wrote and passing me a floppy.
I actually work for a very large recruitmant consultancy. We have consultants walk in every day asking for us to transfer a cv from a floppy. This happens far far more often than from a CD and has never happened for usb.
Floppy drives are cheap and everywhere. heck, you dont need to pay $10 for one. I can find plenty free. It does no harm to have one and may be useful when you least expect it.
I am a smoker. I smoked during the big rises in cost . Yes I enjoy my smoke, yes I would like to quit. As you have said the rises made little difference to me, I simply set aside more money for smokes each week. What I did notice however is that non of my little brothers or their friends smoke, yet they live a similar life style to myself and my friends. I figure this is because the cost of cigi's was too high during the valnurable stage 16-20 years of age. Now they are wise ennough to know not to start. I say the price rise has already worked. We just wont see it clearly untill 20 years from now. Im all for it & I say do the same to gas and tax on weight, then in 20 years we might see the end of the anti-social SUV.
You point out how gun mounted lights will benifit from this new tech, I think you are spot on. Although I feel it will be a automobile industry that will gain the most from lighter batteries and less power consumption. Lighter vehicles cost less and save lives. Yuo also point out that the durability of Leds to withstand recoil on a rifle is a great advantage. once again I agree. This would be another great advance for the automobile. Good lighting also saves lives on the road. Im sure there will be many industries where lighter, cheaper and more durable will help advancement.
Even if LEDS dont produce a natural enough lite for indoors (i dont know either way) they will definatly find a place.
I disagree. I am very much into cars, have been since an early age. I own various hayne manuals have enough knowledge to do most repairs and modifications to my own car. I have been working on my own project cars for almost a decade now and have a fairly good indepth knowledge for all things automotive. Ive milled heads, soon to start converting a carbed engine to efi. upgraded braking systems etc. I know im not going to find a tv show that would be able to discuss cars to such detail and fit into a one hour slot. What makes Top Gear so good at the moment is they dont bother with these details (tiff on 5th gear is not going to teach me anything new), yet Clarkson (top gear) will straight out say what he thinks. ie this car is technically a marvell yet it lacks character and is therefore a bore. thats the kind of information i need. the audi is ffaster but feels like a dinner party while the m3 is like an ibiza beach party. Also my mum quite happily watches the show with me because she enjoys the comedy value. I think they hit a winning formula. Tiff tended to like every car, Jeremy will point out its ruined by its tupa-ware cheap dash.
I dont any one does give it a second though initially, a few people just bid for fun. But when the bidding exceeds $1000 it becomes quite interesting because of the money involved, condsidering it is such a simple/stupid idea. The great part is this silly idea is now making the guy wealthy. Its becoming self perpetuating the more people bid the more the larger companies want part of the advertising ($15,000 may be little for this kind of advertising). IMO its a great idea by Andrew, a get rich quick scheme that actually appears to be working. I enjoy it because its fun and I feel good for Andrew the student..
Using a walkie talkie in a car lot allows
you to block many peoples remote central
locking. A few people dont notice their
car doesnt lock. Then when they are in the
markets our theif is their car doing away with their valuables
easy..
And for those of us who have disable their
locks on thei cars. Spare remote and batteries hidden deep under the car and battery
terminal extensions hanging out below the car
I understand exactly where 'Just_Some_Guy' is coming from. When I got a classic for my first car but had to give it up for a reliable everyday driver. About 5 years later i couldnt stand the 'every day bore' and have started building a hybrid. Its a 1974 BMW 2002 that im installing a BMW m3 fi engine into. Not easy not cheap. But when its done in another few years ill have the best of both worlds.
But if you were able to borrow a friend's car for a minute (like you borrow their CD to rip it), and use a machine to make a perfect replica of the car, I bet your friend wouldn't give a crap, and neither would anyone else.
thats not true at all. If BMW spent 100 Million developing a new car and only sold 1 which was then copied for every other person in need (or want) of a new car. BMW loses out. they would go bust in no time. All their emplotess would lose their jobs.
I not wanting to start anything. But the 3 series does have some major advantages over most other comparible cars where driving performance and satisfaction is concerned. The engin for example is placed at the back of the engine bay to help with weight transfer. AWD is only helpful for tracking and general inhibats a vehicles performance. 4wd sytems add weight, reduce driver feed back through the wheel and often suffer from understeer. For most people like my self its useless. When was the last time you lost traction in a dangerous way and required the tracking to solve you situation. WRC rally yes for road cars its more gimmick and sales orientated than helpfull
"When his brains are splattered on the wall, you are faced with the harsh reality that IT COULD HAVE BEEN YOU, and may yet be. Further your survival may have less to do with native instict & training than by sheer dumb luck."
I think some of us may be able to understand this to some degree because of our roads. Most of us have been near or involved in a deadly road accident. Dont get me wrong Im not saying I know what its like to goto war, just aware of what the presence of violent death feels like.
Disguising your gadgets may be a good way. I have a rather expensive bike I covered in stickers and a light amount of spray-paint. I rarely bother locking it because would-be theives always take the shiny bike next to mine. A little harder to do with an i-pod though! but you could always find a way to customize you items. Many people do it to their cell phones. Whoo wants a pink cell phone with hello-kitty stickers on it other than the creator.
I've been using windows for a number of years. experimented in beo's + owned a few Amiga's back in the day. Now i want to play round with Linux. The box i want to install it on is a p233, 64mb ram with a tnt32. Anyone got some suggestions on what distrabution of linux i should begin with..
Appretiate the help
