    Same here. Chimera is only used as a backup for OmniWeb. Hopefully OmniWeb 5 will be out sooner than later and I can drop Chimera.

    Good test. I'm going to have to try this myself. I'll get my girlfriend to burn the tracks to a CD in a random order and then I'll listen to the CD with my Nautilus 805s and see if I can tell a difference.

    I saw this movie as a fan of almost all of Steven Soderbergh's prior work. Solaris had great camera work which is a tribute to Soderbergh, but it had little else. It was a very slow moving picture, which surprised me when I read that is was only 90 minutes in the 'review' here.

    CNN charges for some of its premium content. However, I was unaware of this because I am a Roadrunner customer and as such don't need to pay for the premium content. I recently found out about it when a co-worker tried to view the Michael Jackson video they had and was prompted to sign up.

    Steve could be in a switch ad. He switched to Macintosh after using NeXT for a while after he came back to Apple.

    I have a feeling it doesn't pass the "Political organizations and activities" test. I want to know if I can get my company to match my dontation to the EFF.

    Well, I do have a bookmark subscribed to it, and when an interesting action item comes up, I let every one in the user group I'm a member of know about it with a synopsis and a link.

    Their current site still looks very 1997-ish to me, without much potential for interaction. People aren't really given many incentives to visit eff.org regularly, which makes it less effective to issue calls for action.
    That's why you have a bookmark for http://action.eff.org/ and you set your browser to notify you if the page is updated.

    While what you state is true, you do have to cut people slack for purchasing bandwidth from one of the large conglomerations. I am forced to do this. If another player existed in my area I would switch to them immediately, but one doesn't. And, the Internet serves the cause by keeping me informed about these issues. Do you think I'm going to read about them in the local paper or see them on news at 11?

    You mean like Apple did? Apple uses XML for preference files. If you have Developer Tools installed, there is a preference list editor that can be used to edit the files without actually seeing XML.

    No, it is indicative of the quality of the product. When someone at MS (or any other company) says we "should eat our own dogfood" they mean that if they can't use their own crap, how can they expect others to? Hopefully, as part of using their own crap, it'll get better.

    And, yes, it is a common expression at Microsoft.

    When I worked at MS, they would have milestones where people had to eat their own dogfood. The departments needed to start using the new version of the software before generating releases.

    It's a common expression there.

    However, I'm with you. I don't think this is a real internal analysis. I think it was forged. Why would Microsoft be concerned about how much cheaper FreeBSD is for start-ups as was quoted in the Register? They wouldn't.

    Yes, but now that there is a better solution, you should make use of it. Plus, unless you were in a programming class all you did was launch whatever application you needed and stay in it, so the lack of a good OS interface wasn't as much of a detrement.

    BS. When I was in highschool as a sophomore we had one PC in the drafting class running AutoCAD. No one used it. I began using it about a month into the class because I was much better with AutoCAD than a t-square and compass. The next year there were probably 15 computers in the drafting class and a plotter. The newpaper class used Macintoshes to produce the newspaper. I think the yearbook was also partially compiled on Macs. There was a Pascal class that used a computer lab. And there was a typing class than used PCs. I graduated in 1993. Hopefully, things have progressed even further since then.

    However, as far as Linux and open-source are concerned... it's not there year. They are no where near as easy to use as they need to be to serve an educational function. They need to get out of the way and let the students use the applications they need. Linux is not there yet, and is useless to a K-12 environment. I'm sure the geeks setting it up and running it have fun with it though.

    That's cool. I wasn't aware of that. If I had mod points and hadn't already posted to this topic, I'd definitely mod you up!

    I still don't use Audible, though. If I pay for something, I want to be able to archive it. That means being able to transfer it to any other media, and play it from any future playback tool regardless of whether or not the company that made it is still alive or not.

    When the hell has Apple's site ever been Slashdotted? They serve most of the movie trailers (Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, Attack of the Clones) that Slashdot links to and have no problems. I can't remember any section of the Apple site being Slashdotted.
