  1. They tried the same thing at the office... on What Software Do Cable Installers Place on Your PC? · · Score: 1

Yeah, our cable company tried to do all kinds of ridiculous "testing" at our office. Since it is a business account, the technician claimed that he had to have access to one of computers or he couldn't leave the modem. I happily pulled up an IRIX 6.5 shell and watched him stare at the screen for a good 5 minutes. The only thing they need to do is test the signal strength and get the fuck out. I'll be dammed if I'm going to let some toothless hillbilly with "2 weeks of installer training" have full access to any of my machines.

"My Japanese oriented small furry animal intestine sex fiction wasn't taken seriously until I switched to Microsoft Windows XP."

Back in the day I always wondered why the low end machines running the MIPS R4400 200mhz 32bit processors felt a little more responsive on the desktop than the low end machines running the MIPS R10000 195mhz 64bit processors. Of course when it came to doing the major graphics work and not just seeing how fast windows would open, everyone wanted on a R10000.

  5. We Need to Clear Up a Few Things. on A Look at IRIX 6.5.17 · · Score: 1

Anyone can upgrade to 6.5.17 if you have the 6.5 base CDs. You can download the 6.5.17 overlays from the maintenance stream at SGI. If you want a more automated update with updated applications then you need to subscribe to the feature stream. To subscribe to the feature stream you will need to buy a copy of IRIX from SGI. Last time I checked the price it was about $600 down from $1200 from several years ago.

  6. Re:It's not changing channels on Targeted Advertising Using Digital Set-Top Boxes · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yeah, Charter Digital Cable streams advertisements on the channel guide and the channel information bar. The two adds they place on the left hand side of the screen makes it difficult to read the channel guide. There's about 45% of the screen left to display program titles and of course they're all truncated. Every time I change the channel the information bar pops up at the top of the screen. There's an advertisement box on the left hand side that also truncates the program information.

It's slow, hard to navigate and there's no way to customize any of the menu settings. Their service reminds me of pop-up advertisements that won't go away.

I feel that there should be no additional charge for digital cable if they are going to shove advertisements down my throat every time I change the channel. I'll be switching back to satellite when my trial movie package expires.

  7. Methane Everywhere on Undersea Deposits of Frozen Methane Found · · Score: 1

Methane deposits like this are everywhere.

Scientists are worried that if the ocean temperature continues to rise more methane will be released into the atmosphere. This will supposedly boost global warming, increase the overall sea temperature even more and release more methane. It is a vicious cycle thing in National Geographic a couple months ago.

I agree with you. I have purchased only two CDs this year and the RIAA would say that it is because I can download entire albums at no cost. The RIAA is partially correct. Now that I can quickly sample music before I purchase a CD there is no reason to waste my money on a gamble. The best thing about online trading is that it introduces you to bands that you never knew existed.
