    I agree. BESS is so intrusive. At least we don't have the version that advertises itself and some other scum company at the bottom of every page any more!

    Also that's why I've set up a CGI-proxy

    Actually, if your security settings are mangled, or are left alone (some versions of IE), all you get is a "Thanks for installing gator" window. It tries (and occasionally succeeds) to install itself automatically.

    If anything tries to install itself onto my machine, I ad-aware it and it goes byebye!

    I happen to like the "arcane" (not really, "password" then "setenv security-mode full" isn't that arcane (coming from a guy that prefers MacVIM to anything else....)) interface better because it can lock out the computer from booting period unless you reset the password.

    typical startup session with this mode on

    ok> boot
    Password: clickety-click
    booting continues

    is sadly blocked at most filtered internet places (libraries, schools) (good thing I have a cgi-proxy available running on https)

    It is a good site however. My job's very first webpage is on there. Sure freaked out the boss when I showed that to him: "What happened to our website"/"Nothing! it's an archived copy"

    I didn't say it was there SOLELY for my amusement. School is for amusement *and* learning, it's in our mission statement. My other point was that the (non-circumvented) porn offenders don't get caught.

    When decrypting a file, check "Secure View." It makes it slightly hard to read on screen but it renders this method useless. It also removes the ability to copy/paste text and save as a file.

    Yes. NetNanny/Bess/CyberPatrol/etc are easily circumvented and nothing really can take the place of good, watchful looking. My school filters the internet with Bess and I've found no less than 3 ways around it. It blocks most useful pages and everything fun (UserFriendly, allyourbase.net, mp3.com/tlmom), while letting a LOT of porn slip through, and the offenders never get caught unless they (quite stupidly) print it or store it on the server.
