I agree. BESS is so intrusive. At least we don't have the version that advertises itself and some other scum company at the bottom of every page any more!
Actually, if your security settings are mangled, or are left alone (some versions of IE), all you get is a "Thanks for installing gator" window. It tries (and occasionally succeeds) to install itself automatically.
If anything tries to install itself onto my machine, I ad-aware it and it goes byebye!

I happen to like the "arcane" (not really, "password" then "setenv security-mode full" isn't that arcane (coming from a guy that prefers MacVIM to anything else....)) interface better because it can lock out the computer from booting period unless you reset the password.
is sadly blocked at most filtered internet places (libraries, schools) (good thing I have a cgi-proxy available running on https)
It is a good site however. My job's very first webpage is on there. Sure freaked out the boss when I showed that to him: "What happened to our website"/"Nothing! it's an archived copy"
It is unquestionably true that Microsoft's largest constituency is the stupid demographic. When I visited slashdot, this thread looked like an idiot bar.
I didn't say it was there SOLELY for my amusement. School is for amusement *and* learning, it's in our mission statement. My other point was that the (non-circumvented) porn offenders don't get caught.
When decrypting a file, check "Secure View." It makes it slightly hard to read on screen but it renders this method useless. It also removes the ability to copy/paste text and save as a file.
Yes. NetNanny/Bess/CyberPatrol/etc are easily circumvented and nothing really can take the place of good, watchful looking. My school filters the internet with Bess and I've found no less than 3 ways around it. It blocks most useful pages and everything fun (UserFriendly, allyourbase.net, mp3.com/tlmom), while letting a LOT of porn slip through, and the offenders never get caught unless they (quite stupidly) print it or store it on the server.
I so agree. My first reaction to reading that section was "Oh, good. This will never affect me because I listen to _REAL_ music." Like The laziest Men On Mars- The Terrible secret of Space Or Invasion of the Gabber Robots...

Also that's why I've set up a CGI-proxy

Need more space? just paint some more!
Or just think what could happen if it were used on the body: "Honey, take off your shirt again, I need that file....."

It could be this. A WOL packet is a broadcast with this structure- MAC-Add
FFFFFFFFFF
My-MAC-Add
My-MAC-Add
My
My-MAC-Add
My-MAC-Add
My-MAC-Add
and your mac might be responding to that
That would be one hell of a coincidence for your lamp to generate that packet! I'd get the ballast and tubes replaced.
