normally he saves a years worth of cases on 3-4 cds.
I wouldn't put too much confidence in those CD-Rs lasting as long as you think. I hope your father is testing those CD-Rs regularly for signs of degradation or failure!
One of the problem I have with this technique is that the guy had to record the sound of each key 30 times before starting to try to recognize keystroke. This is time consuming and requires physical access to the keyboard.
Actually, reading the next sentence in the article...
He was also able to train the software on one keyboard to decipher the keystrokes on any other keyboard of the same make and model.
Looks like he only needs to know what kind of keyboard you have and be able to buy one himself. Little different than direct physical access.
(The trouble is the lack of feedback. You'd need some kind of indication that the other ways had gone to red before the ambulance driver will have confidence going through the intersection at full speed)
On the signals in my area, this is already taken care of by a normal flood light mounted to the pole next to the receiver. When the system is activated the signal changes (green for the emergency vehicle, red for everyone else in this case) and the flood comes on to let the emergency vehicle know the system is active. I imagine this confirms to them that the signal did not just happen to change at the same time as they approached. (They probably can't see the opposing signals.)
Even if we use a "continuum" with nobody having the same exact number, it would still be extremely rare for a 50/50 split.
Consider 5 people: 4.8, 4.9, 5.0, 5.3, 80.0
Still adds to 100, still averages 20, still only one "above average".
The number set used does not matter, the distibution of the observations does.
ADT can install a "cell backup" system that will use the cellular network and negate the need for the landline.
Easiest. Slashdotting. Ever.
There are many documented cases of CDs being unreadable after just 1-2 years...

We're designing the system in such a way that the barrels are very stupid - so that they are very reliable and inexpensive

Nice job....

Not really...
Consider 5 peoples IQs: 5, 5, 5, 5, 80
Average = 5+5+5+5+80=100/5 = 20
Only one has "above average" intelligence.
1. Buy a door to the computer room.
2. Close the door. (Make sure cats are outside room.)
3. Cat hair problem eliminated.
4. ???
5. Profit
