For the most part, they were a decent host. Never had a lot of problems, and service requests were always handled very quickly. Very small company, with el cheapo prices. Yes, I had very recent backups, but that apparently didn't occur to most of the customers using Jatol considering the freaking out on the webhostingtalk forums. I don't think Fastservers is liable at all in this and while I understand that the people who were left hanging want them to do something about it, it's not going to happen, nor should they.
The *only* reason this may be an interesting story (and it's not) is that the guy just plain disappeared. Even that doesn't really even warrant this level of attention. Now, if his Enzo is found in a bunch of pieces on the side of a highway, then this might get interesting.
I went to Windsor Ontario once with a friend of mine just to look around. Crossed the border, drove around a bit and came back. All in all about 120 miles. Coming back through Detroit, the border guards were not amused when we told them that we just wanted to see Canada. Took us a half hour to explain to him that we seriously just drove to Canada for no reason other than to say we went to Canada for no reason and that we weren't bringing back guns or drugs. Good times...good times.
You can't install this software without it calling back to the mothership so it has to be sending some data out to them. (Try denying the Zonealarm request when installation starts. The installation will promptly fail.) Now, I don't know if there's data being sent out after that however.
Excellent! I've been looking for a new smuggling operation for a while now. First it was weed, then coke, then heroin, now CD-R's for Canada! Arrrr matey!
I am getting so tired of hearing about the RIAA's attempts to squeeze everyone for more money. If this works, what's to say they stop there? Next thing, it's let's get the people who but Dell computers, they ahve a statistically higher average of downloading music from Kazaa than Gateway users! New computer tax for Dell previous/current/future owners! All musicians rejoice, your payday has arrived!
Would it really be that hard to put a label on the disk saying that its copy protected? If they can do it with the explicit lyrics label, they can do it with this. Although, I can see it now where the artists will start suing because they can't get their cover art on the discs because there will be so many labels on the front. Back to the longbox!:-)
You've got to be kidding, that even more invasive than a national id with your picture and SSN. What the hell is going on? Really, when is this going to stop? A revolution? Is that what its going to take?
I can't count the number of times I've listened to something like Groove Salad or Digitally Imported and bought a cd from what i've heard (Amon Tobin!!!). I've also used it to see if the music is any good up front, like the new No Doubt album. Who the heck let them release that crap? They should be shot! But it goes both ways, I bet a lot of people are listening to some of the drivel these mega companies like Sony are putting out these days and running like hell AWAY from the record store after listening to it. THAT'S what they are really scared of. 3 cuts deep into an album and it sucks so bad, nobody would buy it, the web gives you that chance to see what the deep cuts are really like. Quality acts like Wilco, all their material is above average, not just a one or two song cd filled with covers and dreck.
I know, I was just illustrating the point of intrusive technology in our lives and the fact that if I can come up wth applications like that so quickly, think of what people with real brains could do with it. Intrusive technologies are already around us and it's not going to get better. Check out 'Body of Secrets' by James Banfield about the CIA and see how fast they adapt technology for less than honorable purposes...IMHO

Finally, I can see just what the heck my apartment neighbors are doing to make all that friggin racket 24/7! And I get to nuke them with the radiation at the same time? Say it ain't so! (sniff) I'm sooo happy!!!! (sniff)
Great, so now instead of the DEA flying overhead with thermal imaging equipment to check for heat coming from a grow room, all they have to do now is drive by and point a camera at your place and see how much your plants are growing every day. (Tell me it's not gonna happen...)
Yeah but that capability is only good for like 500 feet or something (I could be way off on this, I can't find the article) and the reasoning for the GPS chips was that they could pinpoint accident victims within 50'. The big difference between 500' and 50' for emergency crews is that 50' will tell you what side of the road the person is on and since every minute counts, if they have to go on the other side of the road to get you, it may take them 20 minutes in heavy traffic to find you and you'd be dead by then.
At least that was the premise behind it. I think it was to track me, but I'm paranoid from all the implants the government has put in me....
Isn't there supposed to be GPS chips installed in all cell phones as of last year anyways under the guise of being able to home in on accident victims more precisely than the current system? Let's see, with GPS installed and phone taps readily available now, doesn't that make anyone else here just a wee bit uneasy about using a cell phone? I'm going back to my trusty tomato cans and a long line of sting soon, that is until the NSA figures out how to listen in on my conversations by using a laser to read the vibrations off the string.... dang it!
How long has it been since USB came out and I STILL have problems not being able to get good driver support for it and they want to make it ALL USB? What about us Linux folks who don't use much USB because the drivers haven't been written yet? A lot of the bleeding edge people out there that they are marketing this to are using Linux, so they've effectively cut out that portion of their userbase already.
...but the rubber bands on the tubes just scares the hell out of me. Did this guy graduate from the Russian Navy or something? I think the shrink tubing would have worked if he'd have gotten the kind with the mastick (glue type substance) in it. That would have sealed it off great and it's still inexpensive enough not to break him.
I didn't think it was all that rough to install, even though it took a little time to figure out which rpm's needed to have which ones loaded before it. I think one of the big drawbacks of open source is that a lot of the time, it is assumed that you know how to make dependencies and such. But if your new to it, it might as well be written in Greek on goats skin with ox blood. I'll take the time to read about how to do it, but i have to be able to get in the damn system to learn how to use it first!

I hear that. Well, the lawyers got enough to cover their entire cd collections worth of overpricing, and that's all that matters nowadays isn't it?
