  1. Autism on slashdot.... on More Evidence of Increase in Profound Autism · · Score: 1, Flamebait

As refreshing as it is to see autism brought into the news, I don't think that /. is the best place for it. As we can see in the posts so far, posters (as well as the moderators) have just made a joke of it. I'm sure not many people in this forum will have much to say about autism that isn't either modded as funny or flaimbait. I'd be surprised to see more than two posts that are actually enrich my mind.

But what do I know anyways?

Sounds like something for the US military to get into. I can already feel my taxes going up.

From the way things look, this isn't AOL doing the picking on here. But if it were, there is a clear reason why they would want to see the fall of Peng. And that is power. They don't really care about the number of linux clients they could get. Besides, most people running linux might not go for being an AOL client anyways. So no noticable market share increase. They would rather prevent this company from releasing software that uses its own technology.

...and releasing the source code too.

Like AOL really wants everyone to have access to its own proprietary protocols.

Will this all mean that I'll be getting more spam asking me to get my "U N I V E R S I T Y D I P L O M A"? Cuz that's something I really need more of. Something to sit on the shelf so I can pull it down in case I cut my finger off or something...

  6. Re:Digital Camera + OCR on Portable Scanner Solutions for Research? · · Score: 3, Insightful

While the digital camera thing would work, I doubt anyone would seriously want to go through the hassle of getting OCR to work right. For that you'd have to almost set up a tripod to get perfect uniform pictures. While I haven't tried anything like this, I can imagine all of the problems with the recognition of text. Reading or printing the images when done should be fine for most people. That or you could always try to find an online version of the text you use, but I'm sure you've already tried this route, since not everything is online (yet).

cytrix is still only alowing you to use a windows environment. the only positive side is that it's easy to maintain. the downside is that scalability is there only to a certain extent. besides, you still have to have an operating system running on the terminal for it to work anyways... its not the same as having a thin client. This means you have to maintain the computers in the labs anyways... making nothing left to gain. Although, if you have a bunch of outdated macs, and you want to make a simple win - based lab, but don't have the money in the budget for 30 new computers, this might be the way to go... just a thought

They are obviously trying to take advatage of people that would't be able to make legal copies of what they already own. The music industry has been complaining about a decline in sales over the past year, but what industry hasn't also seen declines over the same period. Further more, many of the people who were originally introduced CD's now have most of their collection on them. That means they are no longer spending money on older CD's. It looks like that is where the music industry finds it life blood; not by being inovative, but figuring out how to resell the same thing you've already bought.

They continue to look for additional ways to make optical communications even cheaper through applications of their integrated photonic circuit.

Wow, Infinera seems to be on to something here. It is a company based solely on making a product, making it better, then trying again to make things work better. I wonder what Micro$oft would have to say if they heard of this idea.

This isn't something really new. WindowsXP has this integrated, PC Anywhere and VNC have been around since about the middle ages. And I bet there are more apps that I haven't heard of. I'd like to see what the benefits are of carrying your own monitor with you all the time. What job would have you do such a thing? If you need to get files from your computer all the time, wouldn't it be cheaper just to set up a share instead of buying some bandwidth eating, over priced gimick?

When one large partition has an operating system that fails, it can be irritating to save files stored on it.

    4. Get a copy of windows XP $179, which is cheaper than the phone bills for "FREE" software.

You can order a CD of whatever "FREE" operating system you want to be sent to you for under $10 if you don't have a fast internet connection. Besides, would you want an operating system that has a huge market share and no reason to compete, or one made by people with making something better as their main motivation. This is a tough on to think about....

    7. USE YOUR COMPUTER WITH EASE

This really depends on your definition of what "EASE" really is. If you want to watch everything using Windows Mediaplayer then things are easy. If you want to chose other software that impoves itself over releases instead of just adding backwards incompatable technology to squeeze a couple more bucks out of my poor bank account, then you may want to stay with the "FREE" OS.

    8. If you really want the command line, install DOS, the original and best!

If DOS was the original, then who originally wrote it? A quick look at the history shows that unlike what is popularly believed, Bill Gates didn't author DOS himself. Another thought, DOS may be a command line, but it doesn't have that much power. If someone wants to write a script, they use VB. And VB isn't much of an improvement on anything, except that its the chosen virus writing language because of its ease of allowing stupid people to do stupid things.
Oh yeah, and being the first doesn't really mean being the best anyways.
