    That is assuming you still have your CD Key ...

    Mine _was_ stuck to the back of my cd case not inside the

    Does the new change mean I can't just search for a serial
    number/keygen online like a used to do whenever the urge
    to install to play HL again stuck?

    Since I don't have the original off-the-shelf box what
    else would constitute Proof of Purchase so I could get

    Actually, it does. Certain manufacturers are sueing people under the DMCA for refilling ink cartridges. The cartridges contain a chip saying whether they're empty, so cracking this chip is arguably circumvention...
    Cracking the chip is just reverse engineering for interoperability with the new ink an thus should be free from the reach of the DMCA. :)

  9. Evil King, poisoned wine on Tech-Interview Riddles · · Score: 1

    An evil king has 1000 bottles of wine. A neighboring queen plots to kill the bad king, and sends a servant to poison the wine. The king's guards catch the servant after he has only poisoned one bottle. The guards don't know which bottle was poisoned, but they do know that the poison is so potent that even if it was diluted 1,000,000 times, it would still be fatal. Furthermore, the effects of the poison take one month to surface. The king decides he will get some of his prisoners in his vast dungeons to drink the wine. Rather than using 1000 prisoners each assigned to a particular bottle, this king knows that he needs to murder no more than 10 prisoners to figure out what bottle is poisoned, and will still be able to drink the rest of the wine in 5 weeks time. How does he pull this off?

    SOLUTION: (Think binary)

    10 prisoners 2 outcomes
    0 = alive (not poisoned)
    1 = dead (poisoned)

    1000 bottles 10 prisoners 2^10 = 1024 ...

    each bottle is assigned a number 1..1000 this is convereted to binary.
    this binary determine which prisoner (1..10) drinks it

    eg:

    bottle num: 1 = 0000000001 is tested by prisoner #: 1
    bottle num: 2 = 0000000010 is tested by prisoner #: 2
    bottle num: 3 = 0000000011 is tested by prisoner #: 2, 1
    . .etc

    The number made by the 1s (dead) and 0s (living) is the binary number of the posioned bottle.
