Now this is an excellent point. Except the docking collar for the space elevator would probably be more difficult to construct on the moon because of the lack of oceans. Most space elevator plans call for a floating docking collar/station to minimize the variouses stresses on the docking collar itself.
rsync will definitely do this job nicely.
Take the 180GB offline for a couple hours and do a LAN rsync to the 1.2TB. Bring the 180GB back online, and have rsync to differentials after that.
Simple!
Win2K Server and Professional are indeed slightly different animals. A single image of Pro can be replicated out to multiple machines, and once the computer name and IP are changed they will behave nicely together on a LAN. Server won't. Several companies (Powerquest and Altiris) have solutions for this problem.
As far as why you had problems with just replacing a CPU? Who knows? I've worked in a lab with +1500 machines which were constantly reimaged with 95, 98, 2K, Netware and Linux without a hitch. The secret was identical hardware. Hardware (NICs, VidCards, drives, etc) would go bad and we would try to replace them with the same component. This was not always possible, for whatever reason. In my experience, most of those OSes could easily deal with anything except a MB change. VidCard changes were not good either, but as long as the OS included support for the new card, it usually worked out without problem.
Sorry, I should have been more articulate. I was referring to a hard disk change requiring at most one reboot. More changes could render the system unusable as you state.
Bull. WinXP will have some issues with doing this, however, 2K will be fine. At MOST it will require a reboot after initial detection. This can be avoided easily by using identical drives. All of this assumes of course that all the machines in a given group are identical: MBs, drives, CPUs, etc. Otherwise drive imaging utilities like ghost won't be incredibly usefull as drivers will have to be uninstalled / reinstalled / etc. Plus, letting windows autodetect changes in the underlying hardware usually works, but doesn't result in a lean, clean, super fly machine. It just makes everything run kludgy and pisses of your customers.
Seriously! Why build from anything else? Unless of course you're going to be subjecting it to extreme stresses. If not, well then you get motors, gears, joints, an easily programmed controller, etc. You can add a remote, sensors of various kinds and there are a multitude of homebrew and DIY websites out there.
Not to defend MS, but...
I quickly scanned your little article. Half the statements you make are outright false. For example, quick edit mode for CMD boxes is disabled by default now in WinXP, but not removed. START.EXE continues to function exactly as designed, you just need the right command line parameters. Perhaps you should have researched this yourself first, instead of just spewing drivel.
I've bought or been given several games legitimately that would not work on my system until cracked. (The Wheel of Time was one, don't remember the other offhand) I was able to install them, but then as soon as I attempted to run the game it would crash with some memory error or another. A quick visit to www.gamecopyworld.com to download the latest updates and a cd crack and I was up and fragging in no time.

Ever tried reading a large (+400 pgs) book this way? Sure, it's portable, convenient, you can carry lots of books in just one pda, but I personally read at a much slower rate on my pda than from a book. I can easily blaze through the latest Robert Jordan paperback or reread Tolkien but when I tried another favorite, Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo on my pda, it slowed me way down. However, for reference type stuff, it's great.
I don't know about the firewire raid, but Apple has been doing the ATA to firewire conversion thing for quite some time. In fact you can buy external disk enclosures, that include power supply, converter, etc and support standard ATA33/66/100/133 drives.
Another issue with doing this is the utilization on the router for NATing so many addresses will shoot throught the roof. Make sure you're using some beefy equipment.
umm, actually you do. You just haven't enabled it. As a previous poster noted, open explorer, browse to a given directory, then on the menu click on View->Choose Columns, you will be able to add any music, video, or other attributes listed.
What I would like to know, is it possible to add new attributes by writing a dll or a reg hack or something? Anybody?
So instead of using a directory and file structure like Next, lets modify it and use a compressed archive and file structure setup just like the Next system.

Easily records directly to MPEG and MPEG2 (I use MPEG because that way my computer is still very responsive during a recording and I can do things without frame loss) and can easily be made to record to DivX, AVI and other formats. I've done really crazy things like playing a game, such as Unreal Tournament while watching a TV show. (ie, play during commercials then flip back to watch the show, all without problems) I've even watched a previously recorded show with MSMPlayer while recording something else.
Creative should have licensed the technology from ATI or someone else with some experience (kinda like they did with their burners) instead of trying to start from scratch.
You register a bunch of unrelated domain names, create dummy sites and interconnect them all. There's an actual name for this, I just can't remember it.

The ultimate Tivo. I love it. 120Tb is constant video for 7 years or so according to the article. But if you're recording 50-120 channels at a time, that cuts it back to a few months (don't wanna do the math). But wouldn't this be amazing:

Friend: Did you see that great piece on....?
You: No

You: I checked out that program you were talking about last night. Incredible. I loved how they...
Friend: I know, that's what I was talking about. BTW, could you burn me a copy of Friends/ST/Whatever, I missed it yesterday.
You: Sure, no prob!
