And almost certainly saves a bundle doing so. I got my last printer for $9 after the sale at store a plus the rebate form from store b.
Only bought a new black cartridge once, now two moddles later it's cheaper to buy a new printer than more color ink.
re your sig, that was a good book, can't remember the authors name though. Have to dig it out of storage and re-read it sometime. There was also a short story version of it in some anthology or other.
Whew, I was afraid the gnaa trolls had learned latin or somthing requiring a brain.

Not shure how it got to +3 funny though.

LOL except that's exactly what you can do with shareaza, and it mostly works. Of course it's backed in part by a filter that blocks out known bad ip addresses (user changeable, you can accept the defaults and or add in new ones, even whole compiled lists) but even still some spam gets through and other crap, but most of the worst abusing sites and the *aa's mostly blocked out.
Oh yeah the 'mod system' is one where you still see the file and it's mods, so even badly rated stuff still shows up, just with lots of 'it's crap' mods. The mods include a few presets (sorta like slashdot's mod system does) and the optional write in.
Yeah it is somewhat car specific. The aspire is a tiny car (slightly over 2000lb empty) and rather short. Whereas my other car is a chevy cavalier 2door and is longer and weighs a bit more. The Aspire was easier to parallel park than the cavalier is, mostly due to length and turning radius.
The chevy is significantly harder to steer at about 5mph than the aspire when the cav isn't running and not much easier than when. I really don't want to find out how the chevy does at highway speeds with the engine off though. The aspire was as easy to steer at sixty as the cav is while running however.
As several other posters have said it's supposed to be completely chorded. You can push any combo of keys and each is read seperate of the others without any phantom keys being read or failure to register if one is released while others are still held.
?!?!? Which independants or third party candidates where in the republican or democratic primaries?
Both parties are despicable pits of coruption for the most part. I do realise some good people join one or the other in hopes of making a difference, but they don't get far if they don't 'get with the program'.
To get far enough to get on a primary ballot for eigther of the two big parties pretty much guarantees a corrupt, or at least co-opted, candidate.
Slight correction here. Perot never 'made it' into the debates, he was invited by the two candidates while someone who qualified, at least twice after the criterion were changed to exclude him, was simply barred from attendance.
I say at least twice because the third time it was 'we'll tell you if you qualify, no we can't tell you what the criterion are unless you qualify'.
I was there outside Wash. U. when that debate was held between Bush sr. and Clinton and Perot, and got to briefly meet the Libertarian candidate for president who was excluded despite having twice qualified.
The ONLY way to get into a presidential debate is to be a)the Republican candidate b)The Democratic candidate c) somone they can't just brush aside because of wealth or fame.
This kind of crooked bs is why I consider both parties due for replacement, the sooner the better.
The libertarians are usually the third biggest party.
The only reason we hear about others when thier rich like Perot and can buy tv time (or actually afford to sue if denied) or to well known (like Nader) to be ignored.
Actually alot of people here seem to be assuming power steering is included on all recently made cars. Not true. FWIW I own a 1997 ford Aspire, NO power assist of any sort on the steering BY DESIGN. Got used to to it fairly quick, but when I bought the car I drive now it took a bit to get used to.
So when you try driving a manual transmission car with the engine off (my current car, had to pop start it once), remember that steering system is HARDER because it wasn't designed to work without power, the mechanical leverage is much less than a car designed for it.
I have no clue what my point is, just felt like spouting off.
Probably because he accused people who favor Bush of trolling to take votes for Kerry when then post pro-bush, and then Posted a long pro-Kerry post. Pot-Kettle. Just a guess.
Personally I agree the stakes are a bit high, we have a choice between a religeous nut and a self confessed war criminal for the two major parties. I rather think both a BAD choices for president. We really NEED to vote for someone else.
Bush is blocking needed research on religeous grounds (I'm not 'pro-choice', but he's being stupid here) and trying to amend the constitution over what's essentially a private (usually religeous) issue. And unconstitionaly detains people in cuba.
Kerry can't tell the same lie the same way twice and testified in congress that's he commited 'atrocities' that qualify him for war criminal status and then tries to run on the 'war hero' theme (which is it?) using faked video and medals he did/didn't/sorta threw over the fence.
Both should be tried for thier admited crimes, would teach the next few people in office to tread lightly around the people serve (as in opposite of rule!).
Exactly, wish I hadn't blown my mod points already.
The reason 'it's obvious' is because it's assumed so few will vote otherwise. Self fullfilling prophecy, or vicious circle. Take your pick.
The ONLY way to change things is STOP perpetuating them.
If one vote for a third party candidate is a 'wasted' vote, then it's just as 'wasted' on the republicrat, err democans. The value of one vote doesn't change because of who you vote for, it only changes if you cheapen it in your own eyes by voting for someone you don't like just to not vote for someone you despise.
I'd rather vote FOR someone than against someone.
A third party CAN get in, it wouldn't be the first time.
Someone actually did this, can't remember who (toms? anandtech? someone else?) but it was also a story here a few months or so ago(last summer?) and the results were, err, interesting.
They built a test rig to load test the psu (variable draws and such so as to draw power more evenly across the rails and such) and tested several brands. One brand caught fire well below the wattage on the box or on the included spec sheet. But a few brands did really well, one got significantly above it's rated power before it shut off cleanly, and then worked fine after it had cooled for few minutes.
I do rember antec as being one of the ones that lived up to thier given watages with a little to spare, and not turning into a flaming lump of metal when overloaded. I remember then as they were the only brand tested that's commonly available around here were I live without ordering them.
" had a simple setup with 3 hard drives, 2 cdroms, 3 case fans and a pair of UV blacklights running for awhile......Not enough power from the PS which was a 350W jobbie."
I don't think this is antec's problem. Unless you had a low power cpu and vid card and the other components were all very low draw, your pulling a bit much for a 350w there. Of course it's possible you should have had enough power, without knowing the draw of the components it's hard to say.
Also you can create problems by drawing too much from one sub-component of the output. A psu isn't usually designed to put most of it's power on just one line. I Know a 350 wouldn't a simular setup I had (one more optical drive, one less hdd) without the extra 5-15 watts pulled by lighting and such. admitedly this was a generic (came with generic case) psu, but was brand new. replaced with a >400w antec about 2.5 years ago and haven't had the problem since.
I gotta second this. I've been fixing mine and relatives and friends computers for sometime now, and recently started doing it for $$ freelance. And I've seen at least 4 cases, and one I suspect, where the system was way to wonky (technical term for unreliable:) ) for even a year old win95a install. Replaced power suply with a good one (after testing many other usual suspects) and watched the issues magically dissapear. The one I suspected but can't be shure on is where the guy INSISTED on replacing with the exact same make and model becuase 'that's how it came, I don't want to risk somthing else', and he had me upgrade os to xp as well (from win95-osr2) and eigther could have been to blame.
Another thing to remember is just because it says it's a 400w PS doesn't make it so. A few months ago one of the HW sites (toms? anandtech?) built a test rig and load tested several brands and many failed before they hit thier advertised rating, one even caught fire before it got to it's listed rating. Antec and one other not common around here made it. One of the brands even got past it's rated level before calmly shutting down, to start back up fine when they tried a few minutes later.
"How many years worth of company paper memo's were stored?"
Quite a lot actually, 5 or more years worth in some cases. One of my fathers co-workers quit a fairly decent job to pursue his archival storage bussiness full time as he was making A LOT of money storing back records for various companies to keep them in line with various regulations. We're talking acres of storage space for some storage companies.
Exactly what is kept and for how long varies from industry to industry, and a lot of it is 'liability abatement' paperwork kept till the last possible sue by date is reached. Some of course is government mandated, and some is just becaus.
The interesting thing is a fair amount of the regulated documnets kept are because governmental regulations require paper copies, original invoices, etc. and so are actually printed versions of electronic documents that are also stored on backup.
Yes it is a legitimate use. You may not be able to take out a tank with a rifle, but then a tank has issues taking out individuals with rifles (how fast can it's weapons be brought to bear?) and the people inside gotta come out eventually. More importantly the leadership giving that tank orders isn't likely to be in a tank.
The first country to even HAVE phone service. Thus most of the infrastructure is OLD tech indeed. And since most of the data goes over the patchwork systems that started out as a phone system we have major early adopter problems. We're also pretty spread out.
Also most of Canada's population is somewhat better distributed for the purposes of broadband.
Add in the fact that MOST people do NOT have broad band, designing a site just for those that do is not a good idea unless your site caters to broadband users.
Yeah, I get a whole 28.8 (somtimes just 26.4). Seriously though, most don't have broadband. So do you do a website for the small percentage who do, or for everyone?
Mycroft (and no, I can't get a better connection without HUGE expense)
True, but if your losing 40% of 10 hours effort and the remaining 6 hours effort stored in the battery was used over 6 minutes you get a bit more energy per minute of flight.
The thing about using the slashdot effect to do more than let the magic smoke out of some poor slobs home/small bussiness server is the concept of leverage and targetted effort.
This book was susceptable because of the narrow channel onto which we could focus our ire. Microsoft and the Patriot act are less susceptable.
We had a smallish target with significant influence so we could concentrate on just that.
Microsoft's public presence isn't so narrowly focused.
The patriot act's presence is iffy. Best we could do is hit the (sub)commities in congress most able to change the bad parts of the law with a barrage of good e-mail on the subject. By good I don't mean 'the patriot act is teh sux0rs' eigther. I mean intelligent, concise, and informed comments with a good and clear summary.

"If you want to discuss evolutionary history, let me ask you this. Why, if this was evolutionary, are women having periods earlier now? Wouldn't evolution have determined that a later period is beneficial, and those genes would have carried over into modern women? A contradiction indeed."
Not necesarrily there are other factors now IANA evoltion expert, but the factors contributing to early puberty in modern women would be due to contraception if you ask me.
This is just a minor pet hypothysis with little data. But it seems to me that there would be a normal variation in age of puberty, now the older it hits the shorter a time frame till contraception is likely to be used (how many 12-13 year olds are likely to go looking for it, especially early on when it was 'for married couples') this means that those with younger entry into peuberty are more like to start child bearing earlier, witch has economic effects, which decreases fiscal ability to afford contraception, which increases the number of children born during her lifetime thus propagating the gene for early start more. Also the main evolutionary drawback to early pregnancy, higher maternal fatality, is greatly reduced by modern medicine.
My main point with this is that the number of factors involved are enough to make the obvious answer not so obvious, whether or not my pet hypothesis has any merit.
Gak that first paragraph is horrible, hope it dosen't ruin the message. I'd re-write it but I'm short time and sleep.
