Before they dropped the ball on cellular, there was the "let the marketplace choose how to do AM Stereo" which got us 5 different ways to do it, which meant you had to buy your receiver according to which method the local broadcaster went with, which I guess is okay if you only listen to one station and never move out of that area, but I haven't heard anything about anybody using any of the 5 in a long time.
I suspect you aren't old enough to have been around to be able to fairly judge the stupidity, or lack thereof, of the phrase "top banana" when it was current. If you had been, you'd probably have thought it to be the cat's pajamas.
Not that he's worried about where his next meal is coming from, but most of his "wealth" isn't cash, it's shares of MS stock, which is only worth whatever you can sell it for at any given instant, but if he tried to sell a huge block of it, or even if he tried to sell a small amount and word hit "the street" that Bill Gates was selling off MS shares, the price would plummet, possibly opening him up to shareholder lawsuits.
This may work at work or school where the machines are within the same zip code, if not closer, but will the average home user really want their c: drive only accessible by going through a modem, some 26 gauge unsheilded, non-twisted, been in the wall since the '50s, copper wire that's been expanding and contracting with the changing seasons ever since and working its way loose from the screw terminals where it connects to the local telco's wire that runs for who knows how far to the nearest switching station, and whenever they're using it they can't dial out or answer their phone? Does Ellison know something about the future of utilities that no one else does, like getting a fat pipe to your house for an extra 10 bucks a month is just around the corner?
Perhaps when I clicked "submit" I somehow managed to hit "Post Anonymously" at the same time, but the fact that it occurred with this particular story is just a little too co-incidental for my tastes.
"But Dad, it'll help your TV remote work better!" (if I can ever break him from aiming it at his knee) Seriously, I've been been bouncing it off of the ceiling light fixture, light colored lampshades, etc, for years.
I think you'll find that the gaps in the VHF TV band (between 4 and 5 and between 6 and 7) are due to the pre-existance of other services on those frequencies.
So *that's* how they defeated the alien ship in Inependence Day"! But seriously folks, this is why the FCC was insane to sell (rather than lease) various frequencies (I liken it to selling National Parks, they aren't replaceable or interchangeable). You never know when a new, more important use for a particular frequency band will come along.
How about the "terrorist tactic" of just not working there if you don't like the way they do things. Last time I checked quitting in protest didn't carry near as much jail time as bomb threats, was less likely to get you shot as a pre-emptitve strike by a fellow employee who didn't care for being threatened with physical violence over a difference of opinion, and doesn't look nearly as bad on your resume.
Speaking of dust, why can't someone come up with cases with single air inlet that you can slide replacable HEPA filter cartridges into? Protect your equipment and clean the air in the room.
ISDN *was* about to become the wonderful digital phone standard, but this was about the time when the government was busting up *the* phone company into pieces and so it didn't have the monopoly clout of the past to ram ISDN down everyone's throat the way they did Touch-Tone (insert any legally required symbols here). If Ma Bell had still been the biggest, meanest mother on the block we'd probably have had fatter pipes into the house 10 years sooner.
Actually, I just moderated a couple of posts (in a different story) up, one as underrated, and one as funny (after they had, IMHO, been mistakenly knocked down). They now show as "normal", so the rating listed with the score isn't always what the most recent moderator said about it.
I'd like to see each post's moderation history, both when reading as a moderator and after burning up all my points, so as to see what all the moderators had to say about a post, not just the most recent one.
What I'd really like is to "get moderator" when I'm not busy with relatives, hurricanes, hardware problems, et cetera, and when the stories are about stuff I'm not interested in enough to want to post about, but know enough about to moderate intelligently. Oh well.
Not that I see it as particularly relevant to the main discussion but do you know for a fact that Katz is a Jew or are you just assuming it based upon his surname? If you know for a fact that he is, then just how "Jewish" is he? Does it indelibly color his every thought and action? Is it just heredity, but it's been 200 years since anyone in his family set foot in a temple? Perspiring minds want to know!
Since everybody and his brother are selling CD-RW drives now and CD-R drives seem to have disappeared practically overnight I'm assuming that CD-R's hold up much better than CD-RW's?
If you don't have off-site backup, you don't have backup.
"But hey, doesn't everyone have a Liebert?" I give up, what's a Liebert?
I stole that from a couple of guys who did it on the Carson show one night, I think it was Mack and Jaime (and I don't guarantee the spelling of either name).
They're playing with the time machine again. Now the story is at the top of the main page and labelled to look like it's been there all along.

What chance do we mere mortals stand against the Slashdot Time Lords?

How can you possibly keep these things plugged in? Just what you need in a busy family room, a cord stretched across the floor. I hope UL burns 'em a new one.
'Course this does bring a whole new meaning to the term 'reboot'.
Is my karma too low or too high?

When did they move Red Hat out of Durham? Or does this guy know a lot less about Red Hat than he thinks?
