Seriously, bravo. That's exactly how some of this research works. It's not so much science, math, or original thought but marketing. You sell the idea so you can ride the wave of the idea.

This goes on much more than we would like to admit in science and technology. Scientists and technologists like to think we're unbiased and dispassionate in our analysis... but we're not. We're subject to the forces of marketing and hype as much as anyone else.

That's why we need to really be careful with our figures especially if they prove what we wanted to prove.

I too was always pretty baffled at that. Me though, I'm more the opposite. I've always been a huge fan of fantasy, but not nearly as much of sci fi. I've enjoyed some sci fi, like Star Wars and Stargate, but most of it was more boring for me.

I don't consider Star Wars sci fi.

This is my general gripe with achievement systems, they should be based on achievable things. Things that you can do and things you can do something about. I'll continue playing /. but I'm not going to worry about these. I'm not in this MMO for points I'm playing /. to enjoy myself. Engineer more fun not more rules guys! I don't think /. needed this, it needed new expansion packs with new art.

All the big MMO like /. and WoW seem to be trying to engineer social behavior but honestly how much time do you guys spend studying human psychology and group behavior before making these things? Really? There's whole friggin' disciplines called psychology and sociology built to deal with these things.

Ah... the hubris of programmers ... we seem to think that because we can make the machine do anything we want we are also qualified to make the user do anything we want.

    From the blog post:

The source will be made a available, so that users can study and modify the application for their own needs. If they want to contribute their changes back, they can submit them for review. To discourage piracy, a tiny but essential core (also containing the licensing code), will be kept private (at least until users reach a certain rating).

Earlier in the post it says "The central dilemma of Open Source is, and has always been, how to make a living doing it" -- but then it turns out that the actual plan is a non sequitur.

I'd say that's the biggest flaw. There's no way to open source something and simultaneously have a concept of piracy let alone the concept of the prevention of piracy.

NetBeans and Eclipse are practically the same thing, I'm sure they'll either merge them or keep them going separately but sharing code.

Actually, the issue with Eclipse is that it uses this SWT graphics stuff that is made by bridging into native code to render graphics. It is slightly faster and less buggy than Swing. However, it is also gawd-awful to write in.

Sun has a new Swing replacement(?) called JavaFX which is supposed to be a Flash competitor... obviously it is still not that widely adopted yet.

I would hope the result of the merger would be better JavaFX and a stop to this SWT nonsense. (I mean it's technically very reliable and good technology it just creaks with age).

In fact... if I were making decisions at IBM this might be a major factor in seeking to acquire another application server vendor. I would ignore the hardware business almost entirely. But, that's just my opinion so who knows what they will do.
