It's because the "community" is more like an oligarchy controlled by a very few people with their own ideas of what Linux should be.
It's not "linux cool" to have a friendly, intuitive user interface. That might make it popular, and the elitists who control most of the Linux universe don't want that.
There's absolutely no reason Linux can't be better than Windows or OSX, but for political reasons, I don't believe it ever will be.
Failure to diagnose a disease is malpractice, so doctors are generally compelled to practice CYA medicine and diagnose anything and everything possible. This has the benefit of reducing malpractice suits against doctors, and the added benefit of giving insurance companies an excuse to raise rates on people who aren't really sick. The insurance companies win big on this approach.
I agree with this 100%. Roads wear out based on the weight and distance traveled, not on the amount of fuel used.
Of course, the problem with the US is that they will enact a new pound-mile tax, but not abolish the per gallon tax. After all, they'll do whatever means more money for them and less money for us.
The ToS in my ISP agreement explicitly states that I cannot open my wireless access to those who do not reside in the dwelling my service is provisioned for.
Your ToS may have similar provisions prohibiting you from redistributing your bandwidth. ISPs are well within their rights to incorporate such requirements.
Competition is when two vendors are selling essentially the same thing. If each of the three providers has exclusivity with a different subset of the studios, then it's three different monopolies, not competition and choice.
Instead of growing vegetables like Soy and Corn to get the oil, which can then trivially be turned into something akin to jet fuel, we're going to grow the vegetables, feed them to chickens first, and then kill the chickens and use their fat to make jet fuel?
We're Netflix DVD+Streaming + Amazon Streaming + OTA Television + Our DVD and Bluray Collection + OTA Radio + Pandora + CD/MP3 Collection for home entertainment.
The increased quality of Bluray video does not justify the 4x cost difference to DVD. I can buy DVDs of decent movies at Walmart for $5-10 all day long, and the Blurays of the same movies cost $20-40 on Bluray.

They do give you a choice. It's right on the login screen. You just select Ubuntu Classic as your default interface.
Seriously, it takes almost zero effort. It's two mouse clicks.
Why don't you just select Ubuntu Classic from the login screen?
Yet, I have somehow managed to upgrade from 8 to 9 to 10 to 11 using apt-get and never had an issue with anything...
Everyone has a different user experience, and one man's folly certainly does not indicate the product is bad.
Since I have 12 Ubuntu virtual machines running on my network?

Can I sue the manufacturer of the screwdriver that was used to pry open the lock on my front door?

What the hell did you do to warrant such a demotion?
I do believe the HP50G was the last new scientific/engineering calculator they designed.
It still works great, and I use it every day in my job.
I also have the m48 app for iPhone, which is a handy HP48 emulator that similarly works great when I'm out and about.
Switching off Unity is so easy, even a brain dead earth worm could do it.
Canonical has not "imposed" the Unity interface on anyone. They have simply made it the default, which is easy as pie to change.
Just click your username, then at the bottom, select the Classic interface. It becomes the new default, and you are done. No more Unity.
"Clearly, human error is still a major factor in cloud networks."
That is a huge leap. You cannot take one incident and use it as a broad brush with which to paint all of the players in cloud computing.
This should read: "Clearly, human error was a major player in these two specific incidents at VMWare."
Can Slashdot mods PLEASE dispense with the sensationalism?
... especially on mobile phones...
Here's a little exercise. Go into your browser config and turn this feature on, and see how long you can tolerate using the web.
I imagine you won't last long.
The only reason AT&T is doing this is to try to force you to buy cable TV from them instead of using online streaming services.
This is why Internet needs to be considered a public utility and regulated as such.
350 grain is awfully light .50 caliber long-range anti-personnel ordnance.

I can see it now.
Netflix will have an exclusive agreement with one group of studios.
Google will have an exclusive agreement with another group of studios.
Amazon will have an exclusive agreement with yet another group.
The result will be that you'll have to buy all three services to see all the movies you want... I can't wait.

Yes, but not Chuck Norris.
WiFi is not. If a cellular tab is not LTE, it is not worth buying.
Now I can design a "medical device" using a $100 Wii and sell it to insurance companies for $12,000.
Cha-CHING!
