Does it come in a box with handcuffs, nipple clamps, whips, chains and ball gag?
Because that program causes physical and emotional pain while using. (at least it used to)
I always pictured it's die hard users decked out in over-the-knee leather boots, leather chaps and vest, black eyeliner, full body tats, piercings and bright red hair, doing the editing while sitting on a chair made of metal spikes while someone yells at them constantly.
Linux has the super low end and the super high end well covered, but it has a few serious areas that are lacking.
This post sums up everything thoroughly and completely.
From personal experience I can concur that for most NLE needs Sony Vegas (and Premiere for those whose brains work that way) provide the proper ease of use and feature set.
Sony Vegas is easy to self teach. The interface is clean, simple and intuitive. Much more intuitive than Premiere. Sony Vegas should be the target for Linux Video Editing developers. Vegas is up to version 13 right now. EVEN IF developers targeted version 9 or even 6 of Vegas... that would be fantastic and many people would be filled with joy and singing.
cinelerra is a very capable open source video editing system for linux.
I use it on an I7 system with a gig of memory, and it handles everything I have done with it very well.
Sooooo..... While you edit with Cinelerra what color are the nipple clamps and how many times per minute does your dominatrix whip you?
Because if you regularly use Cinelerra you obviously like pain. Lots of pain.
I have made precisely one video using Cinelerra and after completing it - to prove a point to myself that I could - I said screw this and bought Sony Vegas and a copy of Windows to put it on.
Yeah. 99% of all users don't care about stability (3, 4) or security (5).
Just because he uses ugly computer terms doesn't mean that those don't translate into improvements that a mother could love.
because windows 7 crashes so much?
Security? People don't care about security, they go to wal-mart and buy a copy of norton or mcafee or kapersky and put it on and they no longer care about security because "I put on the antivirus so I'm safe" so no, no-one is going to care about windows 10.
...somewhere 2 million lightyears away in the Andromeda galaxy a nerd zooming into a similar high resolution image of the Milky Way galaxy, seeing a faint yellow smudge no larger than a pixel and wondering if it's a star or noise in the image.
Previous graduates maybe. It had to start somewhere though.
Even if this is real (which is really hard to believe) it is going to be outdated, wrong, and useless like nearly everything else NK does that isn't given to them by China and Russia.
Maybe it's taught by the Chinese. Possible I guess.
I just can't help but imagine a bunch of Norks gathered around a Tandy 1000 hooked up to an acoustic modem with an egg timer. Every 10 minutes they switch off. "Ok, now you a hacker."
Have you seen Caprica? While it's set in the Battlestar Galactica universe instead of Star Trek, it is a mostly planet-bound drama set in an age of interstellar travel, examining the implications of technology on the populace. Themes include religion, ethnic gangs, terrorism, and corporate greed. It was well reviewed but tanked in the ratings.
I think I have, I'll have to check and make sure. thanks for the heads up.
Or how about life on Earth. One thing I've never got form watch Star Trek is what kind of government or socioeconomic structure, or demographic and ethnographic makeup, does Earth have. Does it have a (semi-)independent government based somewhere (Rome? Geneva? Johannesburg?) or is it practically communistic in nature? What kind of ideologies, or even religious beliefs and faiths, are there, if any (even if underground)?
exactly. All they ever go on about is starfleet headquarters.
Fascinating... I don't think I saw that episode, there are many of the ST:Enterprise eps I didn't see.
You're not missing much, basically just Archer doing his usual huff-and-puff self-righteous speechifying and Tucker once again reminding us that he's been in space before. A weak episode even by Enterprise standards.
Which is why I haven't seen all the ST:ENT episodes...
Fascinating... I don't think I saw that episode, there are many of the ST:Enterprise eps I didn't see.
This non-starfleet trek idea may fit with a series of sci-fi books, perhaps.
I wonder if the author would have to get "permission" to write in the ST universe from whatever empire owns those rights, if Kirk/Spock are not part of it.
I'd like to see a story set in the Star Trek universe that isn't about Kirk/Spock and not about the Enterprise or space battles or StarFleet.
Rather, some other interesting story that takes place in that universe with it's set of rules - replicators, holodecks, no monetary system, intellectual pursuits, what have you.
What is illegal in that universe? What would a criminal do? Are there bad guys? What would a "good guy" do to deal with a "bad guy?" What kind of DRAMA is there? What do people DO who aren't in Starfleet? Hmmm? What's that LIKE?
Certainly Roddenberry's universe isn't so mind numbingly BORING that there couldn't be a non StarFleet story to see the other side of the society. Right? Please?
I think the closest I have ever seen was Ben Sisko's dad on Earth where he had his restaurant and the Founders were invading by impersonating Starfleet officials and there was martial law or something. There are other nuggets here and there on DS9, Jake Sisko being a writer, Quark's Bar, etc. The interaction between Odo and Quark were always fun but that is still just an inch away from Starfleet and it wasn't Earth. What do Humans on Earth do in the ST universe?
Anyone know of anyone ever looking at that?
I know "Cracked" once did a bit where they postulated that the ST universe would actually be horrible to live in. Well, is it?
Heh... although only Simon Pegg as Scotty good get away with a line like: "Ach, maybe if I put some NOS into the Warp Core we could overtake 'em... what do I look like a stupid git? I'm givin' her all she's got!"
I need TWO nosses, because I live life a quarter parsec at a time.
I was at a trade show a week ago at a "high end" hotel in downtown Chicago. They had signs up saying to NOT put up your own access points because the hotel wanted to guarantee that the guests had the best possible internet experience.
Yerp.
Had nothing at ALL to do with their $10 per day up to $35 per 8 hour period wifi access plans.
The captive portal was BROKEN, it gave the user the chance to bill the charge to the room and create a login for their "stay." The logins never worked and every few minutes it would forget the mac address and I'd have to recommit to charge my room. It's one thing to charge people for access, but to have a broken mechanism for charging is just insult to injury. Access for ME was supposedly free because I was an "exhibitor" but still, it was ridiculous.
I've strapped a 3D printer on my back, if someone shoots at me I just say "3D printer! Body armor!" and it 3D prints a shell of graphene all around my body!
Yeah boy! It's the future and the game has changed!!!!
The technology required for wormholes is so far removed from our current and plausible near-future capabilities that to throw lots of money at it would almost certainly be a total boondoggle.
So basically what he's saying is we might as well dump the money into a black hole. Sounds like most government programs.
An MS cert does not trump someone with 2 years of real experience. MS certs are only for people that have zero experience hoping to work somewhere other than best buy.
I once had to help a MCSE guy configure an email account. In outlook. They have no value if there is no experience backing up the ability to pass a test. I've been working with computers for over 30 years, and I'm 40. No official certified training, just a lifetime of being a geek. They still call me for the hard problems and never complain about the bill when it comes.
My understanding is there are "boot camp" test prep courses that are worthless then there are (apparently) some real cert programs.
I have a balaclava (ski mask) that I have used when outside in the winter. Keeps my face warm. I like it.
Also criminals use them because it hides your face well. From eyes as well as the cold.
So if I'm out walking around wearing a ski mask don't assume I'm a criminal.
Oh wait, this is slashdot - I should have made a car analogy!
I'm with you and Engelbart - because it just seems wrong to call a box of computer pointing devices "mice" rather than "mouses."
When I hear someone call them "mice" my reaction is that they aren't computer people.
They're not the animal, they're the computer pointing devices.
on a lot of the mouses the click wheel makes for a crappy third button.
Some of the worst are when they thought they'd be clever and made the click wheel TILTABLE and CLICKABLE.
Ends up doing neither well.
What I've found is that the cheap mouses the click wheel works ok. The MS and Logitech ones, of course.
Got me the middle button gets used most for opening a link in a new tab, and also has it's uses in CAD apps.

The files are sometimes corrupt - refusing to load in anything other than VLC
Do people still use players other than VLC? Weird.
VLC is to media playback as Reggie Love is to Barack 0bama - It just handles stuff - PERIOD.

Who teaches these fabled courses?
This article is pure bs.

I saw this. I think they called it Firefly.
yeah.... And the people who actually WATCHED IT liked it, but the tools at the .... Nevermind.
Well, worse things have come out of my brain.
Or how about life on Earth. One thing I've never got form watch Star Trek is what kind of government or socioeconomic structure, or demographic and ethnographic makeup, does Earth have. exactly. All they ever go on about is starfleet headquarters.
What you're describing sounds a lot like Firefly....
hey you're right. ha. Maybe that's why it sounds like such a good idea.
Although the firefly universe isn't quite what the ST universe is... Hmmmm... Firefly, but in the ST universe?
Fascinating... I don't think I saw that episode, there are many of the ST:Enterprise eps I didn't see.

Roddenberry would not permit the filming of a Star Trek movie that was nonstop action.
The ideas were more important to Gene.
What a betrayal.
gotta do something to keep the kids from looking at their phones.

tortured, yes, but your post is more accurate than not IMO.

Enlighten us. What is the reason?
Steep apple discounts and grants make them nearly free? The districts can also charge the parents for them and double dip? Just guessing.
