  1. rednecks? you should be so fortunate on Walmart Ships PCs with Lindows OS · · Score: 5, Insightful

what kills me about the Linux crowd, please excuse the generalization, is that there is absolute belief in the superiority of the platform, and absolute obsession with the lack of respect it gets in the mainstream.

But what makes this observation interesting is that their is also an undercurrent of clubiness (sic?) about the whole thing. The idea that the masses could actually start using Linux is troubling to this group, as it would dilute the cachet of the club. This is bizarre to say the least, as mainstream adoption of Linux would only serve to achieve the first point, respect, and of course the other obsession, deflation of microsoft.

I don't take particular offense to the redneck comments, but you would really have to be an idiot to think that only rednecks shop at Walmart. I mean, christ, they have over $200b in sales. I guess the only thing that would make you a bigger idiot is to not understand how many personal computers are sold in the US annually, and how many of them go through channels like walmart.

the UK and the EU are reviewing their restrictions on 2.4ghz. Primary driver is that the European telco providers are swimming in debt they need to maintain, and looking to wifi as potentially strong revenue sources. Ironically, the debt they carry is for all of the ridiculous 3G licenses they bought at auction from the very governments that regulate such issues. Perhaps that's why the governments are fastracking these issues, they would rather not see their telcos goes bankrupt and have the finger pointed back at them.

Starband, one of the satellite broadband providers, filed for bankruptcy recently, as late as last week I believe.

The latency issue is killing all of the satellite services, as is the cost of providing it.

I'm using 8.2 on my desktop and am very pleased, I did switch over from RH 7.2. Getting it up and running was a snap, at least equal to rh if not slightly ahead.

The ui options in 8.2 are more extensive than rh, but my experience is more limited than many on this forum, so I'll leave it at that.

again, I'm using it on a desktop, so I really can't comment on server usage.

Most large enterprise license deals are financed... even if you can afford to pay it upfront. Time value of money, yada yada. But more to this issue, there hasn't been any money change hands yet, at least between the state and Oracle. The contract was partially paid for by a finance company to Oracle, and the first payment (from CA) was due sometime this year. Regardless, the taxpayer is going to get stuck with some bill to get out of this deal.

All the other replies are correct, I would just add that part-and-parcel of being the state police is that the head of the CHP works for the govenor, therefore it's would be the only law enforcement agency that the govenor could order to do something.
