    The weak Federal law was specifically advanced/signed to supercede and eliminate the tough state laws. The spam industry (and those who benefit from them) feared aggresive state level prosecutions (think what Eliot Spitzer could do to them). They got a "law" that says it is doing something, doesn't actually stop anything, and protects them from everyone who might try to stop them legally.

    The original "commentary" was not just chock full of factual errors, improper syllogisms, et. al. It was dripping with such a malice-filled glee at the notion that OS X might be as insecure as Windows that one has to wonder as to real root of the author's problems. He mentions how angered he is by the laughing of OS X users every time he has to deal with another Windows virus/trojan/bug. Are "commentaries" like his the sad, pathetic result of not working on an OS that "just works"?

    It was the content. He didn't understand the problem, the overblew it beyond any comprehension and he attempted to find an equivalence between the issue and the base, core problems with Windows as far as security. The fact that he ladled his ridiculously stupid "commentary" with a kid burning ants gleefulness was just a capper.

    That people pay him money to spew out crap like that (and that other people that are supposed to be fact-checking/editorially judging are as well) is truly depressing.

    which is an extraordinarily large leap of faith considering that lying for Darl, David et. al. is like breathing for you and I, then it means that the nicest thing one could say is that they have incredibly bad sysadmins. As Groklaw pointed out, there are lots of tools out there to protect against Syn flood attacks.

    The cause that fits much better with their general operating pattern is that they purposely left themselves open to this attack to present themselves as the poor, innocent victims of the evil, Constitution-burning, enemy combatant, Open Source villans.

    I'd buy that one.

    Where is the patronage? Where is the sleaziness? Where is the contempt for voters? Where is the illogic tied to the outright lying?

    With a system like Canada's, the SC would have to step in and re-select W before the voting even "takes place" to ensure his continued reign. With e-voting, the "results" can be uploaded days beforehand. That's so less controversial, after all.

    I think Mr. Cringely will be visiting Guantanamo Bay fairly soon.

    Go here to see the PC Mag version of the "commentary".

    Then you can go here to discuss what a steaming load this "commentary" is. Oh, my gosh. Someone who already has access to your network can put a malicious machine on it that will lead to your Mac being owned when it reboots. That's so freakin' simple. Not like those astonishingly difficult Windows attacks of sending emails, setting up websites and/or having users download spyware. The sky is obviously falling. AAAAAHHHHHHH!

    In the STATUS BAR (lower left), it shows the false address, but with an additional character after it.

    I'll stick with the paranoid world view.

    Especially since I haven't heard one remotely reasonable explanation why companies (like Diebold) that make a large number of electronic transaction devices (ATMs, food/entry access, etc.) all of which have/require paper trails and full auditability suddenly found themselves incapable of providing paper trails and auditability to something as important and potentially controversial as elections.

    When this is actually fixed, maybe I'll be less cynical. Maybe.

    Firebird 0.7 DOES show the spoofed address in the status bar, but with an odd character after the URL. However, it shows the real, spoofed URL in the address bar.
