Android’s U.S. smartphone market share jumped by an impressive 5.2 points in the three months ended in February to 9 percent. Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone share remained relatively flat...
If those trends continue (and, that’s a big ‘if’), Google could catch-up to the iPhone by the end of the year.
As was pointed out in other posts, the *HARDWARE* that decodes h.264 in mobile devices is just a programmable DSP. *PROGRAMMABLE* So there's not really a hardware lock on h.264.
The Droid's screen (854x480) is significantly clearer than my friend's iPhone screen. Small text becomes readable without zooming the browser. Higher resolution video (480p) on YouTube looks amazing.
I'm not sure that 960x640 would be significantly better (there are diminishing returns for a screen that small), but there is definitely a use case for higher resolution screens than the iPhone's current one.
A big problem with updating Acrobat Reader is that some of our administrative assistants have the full version of Acrobat 8 (or older). Installing newer versions of Reader can screw up the full version in unpredictable ways.
So, then you're left with the question of whether or not to upgrade Acrobat to the latest version and who's going to pay for it?
Hear, hear. There have been a rash of malware infections at my place of employment and nobody can even discover what the attack vector was. Nothing can protect you from 0-day exploits that are hidden in ads. Well, except Linux:-)
Sun sued Microsoft for breach of contract. Microsoft distributed a version of Java that was not compatible with Sun's in violation of an agreement between the two companies.
It's not even close to the same as a patent lawsuit. Companies should be forced to keep contracts that they agree to.
Did you even read the article? Here, I'll quote the relevant section (emphasis mine):
Ignition can be timed to happen just when the piston is reaching the optimal point, so it can convert as much of the energy in the gasoline into mechanical movement as possible, without wasting energy by heating up the combustion chamber walls, as happens in conventional technologies.
So, their claim is that by completely combusting the fuel quickly, there is less fuel needed to generate the same force on the cylinder and therefore, less waste heat from partially combusted fuel. Modern gasoline internal combustion engines have a typical efficiency of about 20-30% so there's plenty of room for improvement.
Exactly! The problem is not Android, the problems are the wireless carriers and the phone manufacturers.
When there is an Android update, first the phone manufacturer has to update its proprietary UI (sense, motoblur), then the carrier has to test and approve the update. If all phones used Vanilla Android the whole thing would be a non-issue.
If the wireless carrier wants to remove features, there is another holdup while they alter things and test.
I've done three upgrades (from Kubuntu Jaunty). Two went flawlessly, and the third had the "old kernel" problem. (I did leave it installing overnight so it might have had problems that I didn't see.) I did a clean install on that machine and it's working perfectly now too.
It's REALLY fucking stupid that the same operating system which allows you to do "dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda" without prompting WILL NOT PROVIDE MEANINGFUL AUDIO GAIN.
It's funny you picked that example. I don't know of any desktop system that will let you do that unless you are root, which requires a password.

I found "A girl like you" on Amazon's mp3 downloads. Sent them an e-mail asking about the rights with a link to the Guardian article. If I get a reply, I'll post it here.
It's from a "Greatest hits" album, so I suppose it's within the realm of possibility that the label has rights to it.
Yes, but (reading the article):
Drivel Mage would be a great name for a band!

There's a video of the actual interview here

Uh, I meant 23 minutes. Damn my (lack of) math skills.
Hmmmmm. It appears I was 26 minutes late to the party. Good on ya, Abcd1234.

The typical efficiency of a gasoline internal combustion engine is only about 20-30% when used to power a car. Still plenty of room for improvement.

I don't think Apple will sell them their patents.
I dunno, I think you're way off base with your comment. It doesn't pass my litmus test for thoughtful commentary.
O_O.
I'm speechless! I guess that leaves Symbian as the only solid multitasking OS since its 2002 debut.
I think you forgot about Android. It's pretty easy to understand, Google's such a small, low-key company :-)
I love the next-to-last paragraph in TFA:
Yeah, that majority of "round earthers" is really gonna get it's comeuppance when the flat earth theory is proven for good.
So, you want an installable file system. You mean like this?
Ext2 Installable File System For Windows
I'm not sure why the GP referred to the sysinternals utility when there is a freeware installable filesystem driver available.

So far, I really like Karmic.

I think much of the animosity towards Mono is Microsoft's patent shenanigans.
Seconded. Anything that I want to use that doesn't run in Linux, I run under wine. (Games, mostly).
