  1. Re:Even AOL employees shunned it on Does Using an AOL Email Address Suggest You're a Tech Dinosaur? · · Score: 5, Interesting

As a former AOL employee - this is false. The corp.aol.com bit came around after 2006 - when company email moved off of aol.com and onto an internal Exchange installation. Those of us on the tech side of the business did often use @aol.net with internally operated smtp servers, however. In fact, it was very difficult internally to *not* use your "Business Screen Name" for official use internally - and that continued until after I quit in 2006.

  4. AOL & IRC on CNN Says Chat Rooms Are a Haven for Hackers · · Score: 1

Incidently, AOL actually runs a few irc servers. 2 of them are on Undernet. Maybe AOL shouldn't be the example. They used to have servers linked to all of the larger networks (except IRCnet afaik), but the old admin neglected them and only the Undernet servers remain.

  5. Yeah...? on AOL/Time-Warner Won't Advertise Competition · · Score: 1

Why would they allow advertising of competition on their networks? You dont see ABC advertising on FOX or CBS. It's a tough business, and AOL having their own very large TV networks is a big boost for them. They'd be stupid to allow it.

  6. as a 20 year old systems admin... on Does Age Really Matter? · · Score: 1

I'm a senior unix consultant and a pretty large UNIX systems administration consulting company. I have recieved my share of comments about being a baby, a stupid kid, etc, etc. Those comments have all come from client companies though, not my own. My company treats me very well, and respects my opinions/judgement. I must say, I've never run into any problems with other technical people, they're all very accepting of my age, my problems come from project managers and the like. I'm sure its awkward for people in management positions to find people with more experience in "kids" 10 or even 20 years their junior. The best thing I can suggest to remain professional at all times, and dont ever discuss your age with people (particularly people in management positions) who do not need to know.

  7. why is everyone so confused about .kids? on Neither .Kids Nor .Porn For ICANN · · Score: 1

.kids could be the hardest TLD to implement out of them all... First off part of the point of having .kids would be to create some kind of standard as to what is "kid" appropriate material is. Kids mean different things in different societies, states, etc. Also, content for a 16 year old "kid" may not be appropriate for a 7 year old "kid". Basically I think this is an issue of who would create, and what would be the standard of content being allowed for .kids. Secondly it would also be an issue of policing this content to make sure it keeps within the ".kids" standards. Indeed it'd be a difficult job. I dont think they're being thrown out either, just set aside for now.

  8. All Americans should vote. on Should You Vote? · · Score: 1

If you're over 18 in the United States, then there is absolutely no excuse for not voting. There is no room to be apathetic about the leaders of our own country, there are important issues on the table, and we owe it to the people who have fought and died to preserve our way of life. It sounds cliche, but it really is that simple, there are people in this world who would love to be as lucky as we are to be able to elect our government.
