"If they end up picking on individuals who are perceived to be grandmothers or junior high students who have only downloaded in isolated incidents, they run the risk of a backlash," said Christopher Caldwell, a lawyer in Los Angeles who works with major studios and the Motion Picture Association of America
I'm afraid Java/JSP 15 minutes are over. The way the industry seems to view the technologies is this: beans/jsp for the super heavy lifting and asp/.net for everything else.
The figure if they have to go thru the trouble of using beans/jsp the project really better need the speed because beans/jsp are generally more difficult to learn and implement than other technologies.
I somewhat tend to agree. Unless the project is something that can really win the argument of what technology to use, I'd be more inclined to use something that is super quick to develop, debug and modify. asp/.Net is crap and completely takes away the enjoyment of programming however. I do agree there.
Coldfusion MX which is java based. The application is heavily consuming web services.
No problem whatsoever. The boxes are both running MS Server 2k. These boxes are not even the latest technology.
I know you hardcore asp/.net developers get mighty testy and will say this is simply not possible, well it is. I know it's hard to stomach something as simple to learn as Coldfusion scaling better than your convoluted solution..NET btw is really trying to become what coldfusion is, making things tags more tag based and packaged with pre built components.
And coldfusion is java based so the application server runs on windows/solaris/linux. portable. much quicker to design and build out applications.
What I see alot are companies spending twice what they need to be spending because they get "sold" on either.NET or JSP.
Hell. We'll take their money and give them what they want if they are stuck on a technology they know nothing about other than the "buzziness" of the acronym.
Usually we will push a client toward Coldfusion MX as an alternative. It's what.NET is trying to become in the worst way. Coldfusion MX is built on top of java and will run on JRun, Websphere and several flavours.
The development time is drastically cut in CFMX and it's just as capable with web services, SOAP and all the other goodies.
They haven't been the king for quite some time now.. More and more as the mac hardware ages production houses are switching to Win format.
More software to use and much cheaper hardware when building the render farm.
Hit some of the DV sites and check out what most people are using for compositing and post production.
The reason that Adobe made the decision that they have it they are getting their asses handed to them in the pc market and they need the resources to try and compete in the market where their bread and butter is.
It used to be Premiere was the only game in town for editing. Now there are dozens of apps, cheaper and more or just as capable as the lagging Premiere.
Oh. Just in case this post might actually get a decent mod up: Apple sucks. Why would you want one unless you are a pretentious little manchild?
You should know better than to bash Apple! You'll get labelled flamebait? However, ever notice that the mac folks can say ANYTHING about windows and they are labelled as interesting?
I have programmed Java for 4 years.
MS did not break Java's back. Java is not broken.
Who the hell develops java using MS anyway? I sure don't. Linux all the way.
Go back and read the main news article this is in reference to jackass and you will see that I am talking about the govt forcing a company to include the products or services of another company in their product.
I would imagine if you could stay on topic you wouldn't sound like such a tool.
A man opens up a hot dog stand. He has pretty tasty hot dogs. He charges $2.00 a dog. After a year he's built up quite a clientele.
Soon, another man opens up a hot dog stand right across the street. He has mighty good dogs, more condiments and only charges $1.75 per dog. He hires a designer to design a space age deco facade for his stand and add some neon. He starts to win some business from the original stand, mostly artsy pretentious types and those who feel the original stand owner is a bit arrogant about being the "top dog" on the block.
THe original hot dog stand knows his stand is less appealing but he has been there longer and has built up quite a clientle. He saves the cost of a redesign but instead gets the same condiments plus kraut and lowers the price to $1.50. He wins back the customers who went across the street. The loyalty of his customers increases.
The new guy, not wanting to get beat lowers his price to $1.50. He figures with a better looking stand and the same price he's sure to cash in. unfortunately in the process he buys cheaper hot dogs because he wants to maintain his margin.
The original stand owner, now has two new stands in different parts of the city. He can negotiate better prices on better quality ingredients and in the process lower his price to $1.25 per dog.
Not able to compete against the original stand, the new stand owner is losing money and eventually will have to close up shop.
The original owner seeing that he's beat the new kid on the block puts the final nail in the coffin by offering free fries with every hot dog purchase.
The new stand owner goes to the government and the government declares the original stand anti-competitive and makes the original stand sell the new guy supplies at the same wholesale cost they get from their supplier plus hand out fliers to their customers advertising the stand across the street.
Business Plan: 1) Look at what Microsoft includes in Windows 2) Write a similar App. 3) Cry like a baby, kick your legs, get a lawyer. 4) Profit!
I used to be a mac guy for about 7 years. Then guess what happened? I got educated about computers over the course of a year when I was exposed to the wintel world. When it came to buy a new computer I spent half of what I would on a Mac and got a S4iTload more for the money.
I've discovered that the following are absolute and complete myths made up/believed by those who are too closed minded to actually look at what the PC world has to offer:
1) You need a MAC to to Audio and Video. They are the standard.
-- F*cking ha! There's about 20x more audio and video titles for the PC and the best of them ECLIPSE the best mac software
2) Windows machines are unstable.
-- Windows XP beats the God damned pants off of OS anything. wow! I no longer have 50 windows open and all detached anymore! I also never have to reboot. The damn thing never hangs up unless I do something stupid like accidentally kill a raw video file that I'm trying to encode at that moment.
3) Windows machines are SLOW compared to Macs
-- All I know is a AMD Barton 3500 whips the crap out of the G4 I borrowed (in contemplation of buying it) for encoding DVD quality mpegs in preparation for mastering to DVD.
The biggest thing I got tired of hearing from my mac friends when I told them I bought a PC was this: "Ugh. That damn thing is so ugly."
Luckily I got past the immature and pretentious idea that somehow the design of a computer should have anything to do with what you can do with it.
1) IE has such a market share it IS the set standard.
2) I could care less if some F*cktard with netscape 4.x can't figure out how to upgrade his browser.
3) I've used Safari and it's no picnic. Buugg-y.
4) Usually when a client comes around who wants this sexy, slick cutting edge site that requires layers, css and dhtml the conversation goes something like this:
"The code required for you request may not run on all browsers."
"Who may be affected?"
"Netscape users, Opera users and anyone else not using IE"
"what is that in numbers?"
"Oh about 6-8%"
"Ahh. Oh well."
We've gotten to the point where we use IE and Netscape 6.x as the guideline and if a client wants the site to work with other browsers they pay more for that.
Did anyone actually expect that right off the bat the service wouldn't do great? The mac zealots of course wanted to be part of "Apple History" and can now say "I was there" when the kool-aid mixer launched the revolutionary service (Emusic is a much better model and one of the few online music service survivors but since Steve's hype machine isn't working there you don't hear about it). After a while the numbers will come into alignment. Now that the courts have said that Grokster and Morpheus can not be held responsible for what they do, look for centralized, truely anonymous p2p which will kill any pay for music service and send the riaa into fits.
If you really love music and want to pay for the variety, go to Emusic.com. NO DRM AT ALL and works for anyone who can use the internet.

Too fucking late Chris...
If you want socialism why not just move? It'd be easier to obtain than move the U.S. in that direction.
The liberals that founded this country would puke in their wigs if they saw what it has turned into...

I think you are not necessarily looking at the wrong OS (Although I'd go Linux and we do often).
.NET btw is really trying to become what coldfusion is, making things tags more tag based and packaged with pre built components.
We have a client that serves 140-160 concurrent connections at once for about 16 hours a day. Our environment:
1 Dual Xeon 2Ghz system 2G Ram
1 Dual Xeon 2Ghz running MSSQL 2000
Coldfusion MX which is java based. The application is heavily consuming web services.
No problem whatsoever. The boxes are both running MS Server 2k. These boxes are not even the latest technology.

Try Emusic I've downloaded several things from boards.. and autechre...
.60 per album...
10 bucks a month and all you can eat. I've probably downloaded around 1000 albums in the past 6 months.. So about
Some mainstream stuff but mostly eclectic off the beaten path..
Now that has to be one of the best posts I've read so far in this thread. Not surprisingly you were only modded to 2.

How exactly is this flamebait?
/.
Oh yea.. you didn't suck up to the mac lovin moderating nancy boys here at
Apple STILL the king of video and audio?!

Surprise...
Anyone saying ANYTHING against [cr]Apple and FOR M$ is INSTANT flamebait..

Shouldn't Taco Bell, KFC and every other restaurant owned by Pepsi Co HAVE to offer Coca-Cola products as well alongside Pepsi Products then?
Every industry has exclusive agreements. Microsoft is doing nothing out of the ordinary.
For that, they violated the law.

When are you going to learn that anytime you say anything against Apple or FOR Micro$oft you get labelled at flamebait?
Watch how it's done:
You are right. Only socialist pinko jackasses think that Micro$oft should cater to their competitors.
Capitalism rocks.
Nope. VW Passat..
Oddly a make of car a lot of Mac users drive. Because they think it's a trendy car and can't afford a BMW.
F*uck Mac and it's crippled horse.

What are you doing? Reading text files?
I can tell the difference between 800 and 1.6Ghz just surfing the web.
Because if I can rip and reencode DVD's 30% faster I can steal more content from the MPAA.
Geez.. Some people..
I am currently, as an experiment, producing ricin, anthrax, sarin and vx in my basement to prove it could be done with $15.00 and some green stamps.
Since I come off like a ecentric geek, I'll be left alone and fawned over by other geeks.
I'll be posting a how to for anyone who wants to pay.
People...

So apparently you'e never heard of Emusic or Kazaa or Limewire or Gnutella or Morpheus or Aimster or Napster or eMule or EDoneky or .....
Why you would need a MAC to get music quickly over the net either means A) You are an idiot, B) You are an APPLE SHILL or C) You are likely both
