In any reasonable market, flaws impacting the safe use of a tool for its intended purpose should be fixed at the manufacturer's expense in a reasonable length of time.
If Microsoft isn't providing secure software (and yes, they aren't), then they should be providing free security fixes under the same terms they provided the original software. To do otherwise is (IMNSHO) to be an accessory to any illegal activities which occur as a result of the flaws.
Actually, many of the really competent ones suffer in a different way; they use vi instead.
It's amazing how much more usable than emacs it can be, especially over a slow network connection (like DSL or dialup).
How would they react if your machine were to continually and repeatedly acquire malware due to IE security holes?
Are you sure it's time to start being more careful?
Just make sure you create backups of any important documents;-)

Also, http://www.spybot.info/ has been alleged to be a good antispyware program.
Rule #1: Don't plug it in.
While Linux itself doesn't use CVS (what would an operating system kernel use CVS for, anyway?), many kernel developers use it.
