How bad do you need that pr0n? Seriously tho, I've heard stories that (for example) General Motors can pull your medical data from 30 years ago within a matter of days, off of tape. Imagine a room full of tapes and a very old machine still on the LAN -- got family members that work there. Once in a while they move it onto newer media.
How ironic. RedHat was the reason that linux became my *only* desktop, 10 years ago. It's still my only desktop. I disagree with them, that it's too hard. I think it can be done. I fully understand and agree about their bottom line however. Idle dreams, would RedHat partner with e.g. Apple for UI and app/desktop integration?
"You don't need to "float a viable idea" in order to put solar cells on your house or erect a wind generator in the backyard."
Actually, around here you do need all that, plus permits, inspection, insurance, zoning clearance, and input from the neighbors.
Ah, OK. Let me try to explain. I live in New York, which in many ways is to the left of California even. A good many people here favor such as solar, geo-thermal, and windmills. But regardless of whether there is a homeowners association or not, every time anyone floats a viable idea, what happens? Politicians and activists come crawling out of the woodwork and generally hinder things until the idea is shelved. Meanwhile the utility rates continue to climb.
Interesting. Let me date myself a bit here: I remember watching a guy walk on the moon, and I remember Viet Nam and Saigon. FWIW I switched over to FOSS/GNU/Linux a little over 10 years ago. Based in the USA here.
After looking at the layout of the country and major cities, I felt that decent public transport would be vitally important. I've travelled or lived in all the major cities several times, driving from coast to coast. I would *love* to see a high-speed euro-style train connecting them, and busses in the cities themselves.
Problem that I see is, every time somebody comes up with a plan like that, the politicians jump on it and totally kill it. They use it for a political football instead of thinking what is good for the people. That is why in my town we have busses... that nobody uses. They run on a schedule that doesn't fit any local employment or schools. Even though millions were spent on municipal bond issues, it is still necessary to raise rates well over a dollar to cover the cost of a trip that would only take 10 minutes by car, but costs hundreds of thousands in a bus that is empty.
As for coal and oil consumption, well that's just horrifying. My house is supplied with hydro power but I understand how that is limited. So why the *hell* do local and state pols make it almost impossible to develop alternative energy? If some guy wants to run his ranch off a windmill and solar panels on the roof then I'm all for it, don't get in his way.
er,
Memo to record labels: What's wrong with having to fight for shelf space like everyone else? Competition? Has it occurred that maybe Wal-Mart would like to sell even more?
What he said. The kernel and driver devs don't actually *want* your code, they are going to write their own anyhow. Rather what they *do* want is a full spec to write to. Even if they have to sign an NDA for the spec, as long as the code itself is free, many of them do.
You'd be surprised to know how many of the devs actually work for some very large companies. Just read the source and note the emails to get an idea of who works where. I did.
And I'm in the middle of a recompile right now, just to completely tune my kernel to my box.
Maybe the cost and complication of windows emulation is actually the way to go, given todays processor speeds, multi-cores, and virtualization. I don't like it myself, and the situation sucks. But Linus' reasoning is correct IMHO. Problem is, he's an engineer and these are lawyers. I'm sure he'd rather deal with something else.
Totally OT but I've had to rebuild a few kernels to get the ACX-100 (texas instruments) wireless going.
Pretty much true, It's just a pity that I had to wait most of my life for the UN to do it instead of my own gov't (USA). FWIW now that I'm getting a tad older, I'm enjoying the health and nutrition info.
Not sure what to say other than the fact that I have used linux exclusively on the desktop for more than a decade, and USB is a new thing here. Mostly for cams. Server boards (true SMP with big RAM) just for the longest life and build my own since the pentium pro. Its a combo that I can recommend.
Strongly seconded, by a NY native still living upstate.
Do not ever mess with the NY troopers and detectives, in case you are travelling. My local community college is an entry-level point for troopers; they are required to have at least a 4-year degree and equivalent military background, in addition to:
*weigh at least 80 - 100 kilos (up to 250 lbs roughly)
*well-armed and not afraid to use it (standard is a SIG/SAUR or Glock with spare clips)
Long story short is just say "yes, sir" if you ever get pulled over in NY. And yes, they *will* actually spend a few hundred K to solve the murder of a hooker or a bum.
"they want precise instructions and they want those instructions to work. They want it standard..."
Right. That's why the MS-OOXML "standard" is some 6000 pages long and inlines obsolete binary formats. They do it to be precise and standard. Sure, whatever... personally i wouldn't have much prob if companies would not pull shit like this. But they did and they do, so I switched 10 years ago. On the desktop even.
Technically, you *can* get the same power out with a turbo or by raising the static compression ratio. Or both. The parts are available *now* just ask any hot-rodder. Ethanol has an effectively infinite octane rating but only race cars currently take advantage of that fact. From a former mechanic... BTW this is *exactly* what the Indy and Formula cars do.

A few hundred dollars, actually. For retail box sets of software. And I've never used their support services.

Nope. Umatched socks are simply the larval stage of coat hangers.
OT regarding your quote: that would be Jos. Smith in the D&C if I recall correctly (I'm inactive). However sadly, it is very true.

Well, yeah basically. It's been that way for years, mainly for legal reasons.

Um by law don't they *have* to present or else basically STFU? Its not like you can sight unseen. a grokker
Shorter way to say it: don't fsck with the owner.

fish fuck for free.
"What is wrong with me?"
Nothing. Nothing at all.
Nah. It was more fun to talk about rooms with spiders. But what if the room is actually the inside of a timecube?

I would like to project hello.jpg in a crowded subway (tube) while taking a video of the ensuing pandemonium. And then post it on the net.
