  1. Gentoo is the best, really on Gentoo Linux Reloaded · · Score: 1

I used to use Redhat, Mandrake, and even once paid the $40 for SuSE. EVerytime either Mandrake or Redhat released a new version, I waited eagerly in anticipation, and sometimes stayed uo all night so I could be the first to download the iso's. With Gentoo I don't have the strong "need" to upgrade anymore, because it gave me so much control over things, that eventually I was able to get it running just the way I like it. "Perfect" in a sense. It's funny how now I have no reason to do a "fresh install" of anything, and I'm running the latest and greatest software. Good shit (tm)

    Why not just use Gentoo?

I use Gentoo, and I've done LFS before. You really don't have to know much to install Gentoo, and you barely learn anything because everything is so simplified. This is why I use Gentoo. But I don't think it compares to LFS, where you get to do the minute details of every step of the installation, and have to tediously maintain it.

Are you kidding? Since many people will just choose a recent WD, Maxtor, Seagate, or IBM, for their home computer, why not choose the most quiet? All of the recent drives load Mozilla quickly enough, and I've only heard about high failure rates for IBMs.

I don't think you should worry about Intel and AMD so much. They have too many customers who do a lot more with their processors than send emails and play MP3s. There would be a serious backlash if scientists, developers, and artists couldn't get their work done anymore. On the other hand, if a scientist can write and compile any program he wishes on a computer, then most likely that computer can record/play a stupid MP3. And since MS's solution is apparently entirely in software, what's the big deal? Don't buy it. There is no subtle way to sneak DRM hardware into the market, other than to phase out non-DRM hardware. Not that it matters, cuz I just recently discovered my almost 20 y/o Commodore 128 in a garage back home, so I'm set with my current hardware for the next couple decades.

The GPL is as "enforcable" as any other copyright license. At worst, if a judge has a serious problem with the GPL, the authors of GPL code just have to rewrite their licenses. If the (what I consider) more serious threats are dealt with (bogus software patents, U.S. federal laws being written by large corporations) so that we can code and use whatever free software we want, I don't think it will matter if almost everyone still uses MS Office. I just see OSS as being a minority culture that will do just fine if the majority culture doesn't get in the way. I now see how OO can help with this, but I just didn't think this particular app would have that effect. Anyway, I do appreciate all you've done, and especially what you're going to do in the future.
