I think it would be very cool to use this as a platform for a robot battle. It could provide something unique over the plethora of wedge-bots that everyone seems to use now. Call it the weeble-wobble-bot. Not only could you drive it around, but you could add in intelligence to react to events (though I'm not sure if it's legal in the games). The price is suprisingly reasonable if you are aware of what a lot of the competition bots cost.

If you're from Minnesota, you've gotta go to Ax-Man. It used to be a complete mess that required a LOT of digging around to find gold, but they've cleaned it up in recent years. I used to go there to buy stepper motors, solar panels and light sensors to build little robots from scratch. They always have the wackiest stuff - I recall dentist's chairs, 60 year old computers, ceramic hands used in molding latex gloves, gas masks, electronics parts of every shape and size, pulleys, doll heads, fuzzy christmas present tags from the 50's... The signs hanging about are a riot. Serious amounts of teddy ruxpins to be hacked. I recommend the St. Paul location!
The bottom line is that nobody wants to pay for heavy-liberal-slant, anti-American "news" that you can get for free elsewhere. That's what Salon offers, and not too many people want to pay for it. The last article that I remember on Salon that had any value was Courtney Love's anti RIAA piece which is available elsewhere for free.
"Personally I hope they stick around, I think they are one of the best sources of independant journalism on the web--even if I happen to agree with less than 10% of what they have to say."
This just doesn't compute. I don't understand why you really care one way or another - it sounds like it's a site that doesn't provide you with any value, so why do you care? At any rate, it's my point exactly - few people agree with what they say and fewer are willing to pay for it.
"I also think that it would be a shame for them to close now that they've finally created an advertising scheme that has a
snowball's chance in hell of working on the web."
I don't understand this either. Their scheme *doesn't have a* snowball's chance. Again, I can get the same socialist drivel elsewhere without the ads.
"I can actually recall some of the adverts I've seen on Salon--what other web site can you say that about?"
Plenty - Microsoft & SourceForge on slashdot, not that it matters. Besides, I'm not going to start paying for slashdot anytime soon.
"Salon says that if they get another 50,000 subscriptions (they currently have 50,000) they'll break even for the year."
How about if Salon works on getting its cost structure in line with the reality that is 50,000 subscribers. They've got a lot better chance of that happening than doubling their base. They've been around long enough that they'd better make it on what they have now and grow from there.
I say good-bye to Salon. It was nice knowing you. I'm sure that others will learn from your mistakes - it's the most you can hope for at this late stage of the game.
People are tired of the extreme-liberal slant. We're not buying it anymore. I don't want to hear about how evil I am for wanting a better life. I don't want to hear about how my country is evil while dictators kill their own people. If Salon wants to survive, they'd better start producing content that is in line with what people want to hear. Gee, I wonder why so many other outlets are gaining so much marketshare.
Now mod me down, because you don't agree - that's what people do on/. right? Hopefully moderators with a clue will recognize I'm right. You can argue the politics and that's fine, but the bottom line is that people aren't subscribing because their is no value in what Salon is producing.
The only place that embraces freedom of choice and yet judges those of us who choose to drive SUV's. Or does freedom of choice only apply to operating systems?
More sensationalism? The article DOES NOT state that a Tivo ever suggested that a user was a "pregnant gay man". The article clearly states that after a user bought and browsed for specific books, the recommendations that AMAZON was making caused the USER TO THINK that amazon thought he was a pregnant gay man. Wrong facts? link to a subscription site? Makes me wonder if I missed a typo in this post... gee, maybe it's a duplicate too! Mod me down for nitpicking a non-M$ article (clever dollar sign eh?)
Sorry, but if you're "highly wealthy" (sorry, but 100K certainly doesn't qualify for that) chances are that you don't have all your money in one account in a single bank. Hopefully if you were wise enough to amass that kind of money, you learned along the way to diversify. That might mean multiple accounts at multiple banks, other government insured securities, highly rated bonds and any number of other low-risk/no-risk investments. To your point of making it look like it never existed, please tell me you're saving your bank/etrade/whatever receipts when you make your 100K deposits...
Karma: Mostly tasty due to copious amounts of olive oil and cheese.
When can we expect some innovation, or even product? I've wanted to buy a DirecTivo for over a year, and they've been sold out everywhere! I looked into a non-tivo version, and they were sold out everywhere (at least in retail stores) for 5-6 months. The series 2 doesn't have directv support built in and I don't believe it added anything other than extra storage. Plus nobody is saying anything about recording HD yet are they? It seems to me that there is a serious lack of innovation and that Tivo has shot themselves in the foot by making it difficult to buy their product. Mabye DVHS really will be the way to go? While the disadvantages to direct access are obvious (not to mention some difficulty in timeshifting) the quality is amazing...
A bit OT, Tivo & SonicBlue have about a million subscribers combined. I guess that since this is/. and Tivo (used to be?) hacker friendly the article gets posted. Well, this might be slightly OT, but the article just above this one is more important, and affects 120 million people - After 5 years, CE Makers and Cable Industry Agree on Standards.
Karma: Mostly tasty due to extra virgin olive oil.
From reading the article, it seems that both companies are getting pressure from other vendors who "are incorporating features into set-top boxes". Is this to say that these vendors are going at it alone? Why wouldn't they license the technology from one of these companies? Does this mean further diverging standards? It seems to me that Tivo could go to a DirecTV-like model by getting their technology licensed, subsidized and ultimately built-in to future hardware (I was recently suprised how many TV's have DirecTV built in). Am I missing something here??
I've recently taken the stance that there will always be some small group of people that you'll never be able to convince. For instance, with the moon landing, a Gallup poll showed that about 6 percent of US citizens think it was a hoax. Interestingly, they mention that about this percentage of people will end up saying yes to almost any poll question asked! For futher evidence of people doing irrational things, look at the mid-term elections - Rep. Traficant from Ohio got 15 percent of the vote and he's in prison on 10 counts of corruption. Yet somehow he's still the best person to represent the people? This is why I really think the best you can do is lay out the facts, teach as much as possible and ultimately hope that enough people "get it".
"posting as anoymous cowarad so as not to be a karma whore". RIIIIGHT - anonymous cowarad? User #582519? Too funny.
Anyhow, here's a good Guacamole recipe:
Recipe courtesy Alton Brown
3 Haas avocados, halved, seeded and peeled
1 lime, juiced
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 medium onion, diced
2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
1 clove garlic, minced
In a large bowl place the scooped avocado pulp and lime juice, toss to coat. Drain, and reserve the lime juice, after all of the avocados have been coated. Using a potato masher add the salt, cumin, and cayenne and mash. Then, fold in the onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and garlic. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved lime juice. Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour and then serve.
