    I disabled the cache and i see firefox consuming 98% of cpu time and over 100mb in ram, especially on flash sites.

    Granted, maybe it is a bug on the plugin, but anyway firefox is slower than IE or opera, not only because of its cross platform interface (xul) but rather gecko as well (ktml feels faster, guess why apple chose it instead of gecko)

    An also, most missing features in firefox without extensions are available in opera by default. (source: a digg article, too lazy to search for it)

    I take it you haven't seen the java 1.5 generics implementation. Generics, autoboxing, and lots of other features were just done for syntactic sugar, and are indeed hackish. Also, because java isn't a complete OOP language, some hacks were need to be done (particulary with strings and integers)

    People in academia that i know refuse to install 1.5 and still use 1.4.2

    And, the most important thing, is that vorbis isn't superior to AAC, the sound quality is practically the same, and vorbis requires more CPU to decode it, which would mean the iPod would be more expensive than it already is, and the battery life would suffer.

    Vorbis just doesn't cut it. Accept it and move on people

    Simple. It is known that exploits are made after MS releases the patch, by reverse engineering them. Since 90% of the people is stupid and don't patch their systems (i made this up) then these people get hit.

    My rant is not against MS. It's against people (supposedly people with knowledge) don't take the time to update their systems. SP2 actually improved this by trying to push the updates in the user's throats.

There are so many of them, some Free, some closed source, which provide a different set of features.     AJAX doesn't make it easy to develop cross-platform web applications. Look at all the browser incompatibilities in the developing of Gmail and more recently MSN's start.com page.

    We need to re-standarize Javascript or at least make sure all the browsers implement a 100% compatible version. And i don't think that will work since not even HTML is properly rendered by any browser at all.

    t will be interesting to see if they drop java in the forthcoming project. In 9.3 they distribute it on the cd. They pay Sun for this priviledge, so I find it hard to believe they would be so charitable in the future.

    Slackware distributes java and installs it by default. I don't think they pay anything.

    That's why i use Windows' own NTloader to boot my linux distros. That way i can reinstall windows and linux and still be able to boot both without overwriting any of them.

    We should all be applauding Apple for finally putting 512MB standard in their machines.

    No we don't. By the time they add 512MB to all their product line, it won't be enough. The powermac line (that is, the machines that are supposed to be the fastest they make), STILL come with 256MB RAM in the single-cpu model. An iMac has more memory. This is stupid.

    We definitely need a "Open Source Software" (OSS) section on slashdot, to avoid using weird sections like Apache for these types of stories (yeah, apache is one of the oss in the story but still)

    The subject should read OSS Products instead of OS. OS is known as Operative System most of the time.
