What's worse is that many times the annoying nerd thinks that people are impressed by his wit.
After watching The Manchurian Candidate in my English class, some heavyset dork started chuckling to himself and remarked, "You can't put a silencer on a revolver! It's an open chamber!", seeming really pleased with himself. Yeah, buddy, you watched the movie so closely that you spotted that, but tell me, did it ever occur to you that maybe it wasn't even a real fucking gun at all? It's a movie! He's an actor, you're a fuckwad!
He was so smug I half expected him to turn around and ask "Am I right folks? C'mon--who's with me?"
Personally I think it comes from the emphasis these nerd-types put on being right. It's a status symbol, and is one reason you'll find a lot of these guys on debate teams. It's the argument that counts, not whether its worth discussing in the first place.

Professionals are not so numerous in "third world" (read: underdeveloped) countries.
One of the most important things my money management teacher taught me was that things are only worth what people pay. Seems logical--registrars are only able to "cash in" on TLDs because people are willing to pay for them. No one has a monopoly on TLDs themselves; YAHOO.

No, but perhaps they could use some LAbiaSpread.
