I guess that's the dig most people here have with it, it's nothing special, nothing new, it's just a regular source-based* distribution.
Personally, I don't see what the point is... it won't be as good as Gentoo, simply as it's younger, but then, it does no harm at all to build and distribute it. If that's what these guys wanna do, and others support them, leave them to it!!
But there is more than one pipe (metaphor). AOL is using this stategy is fine, as it won't effect the rest of the net.
I think it's quite a good idea actually. Though I've never been fond of AOL (having had a v4 account on Win98 and resenting the built-ing software), but I do think that this is a good idea. I think it will take years to catch on, but then (as someone else mentioned here), it's not like AOL are likely to fold at any time soon.
Surely the internet can develop in all directions. If one company wants to make it commercial, and another doesn't, so be it.
For example, there are AOL groups like/., with completely different content, which run parallel, and have no need to (and so don't) interact.
Just because the internet is literally linked, doesn't mean it is in practice. It's the people who make it what it is, not just the technology.
because you posted as an Anonymous Coward..!?
Why would you do that?
Now you won't even find this message, as it's not linked to your/. account. Silly you.

#1 - Do *not consider* starting a company unless you know exactly what niche you are going to fill.
yeah, agreed. i have spent some spare time developing audio plug-ins, largely as i was so impressed by the VST(i) concept.
This is by no means a niche market, by it is one which will not be saturated for a long time since there is such a wide user base as everything is compatible.
I know that's off the subject of the article, but it's still food for thought.
yeah, i've thought that before. -ben-

*How many ways are there to interpret this?

i guess it's a commonly used idea, but did anyone ever read "Look To Windward" by Iain M. Banks?
