  1. Religion as a means of information management on Dutch Court Rules That Linking Is Legal In Scientology Case · · Score: 5, Insightful

I prefer Neil Postman's view on the subject in that religion is a mechanism for providing order and context to information. Religion might seem like a crutch, but to most it is a means of imposing a comforting sense of order on to the perceived universe.

You could argue that Slashdot behaves much like religion, in that it ranks, orders, and provides emphasis on selected information. Just as Pat Robertson tells his followers that rock music consists of backwards Satanic rituals, Slashdot moderators dish out "-1, Troll" tags to me and put me below the posting threshold. Both of them have a major role in selectively sieving and censoring information.

Actually, I shouldn't compare Slashdot to religion. Slashdot IS a religion.

That's great, but we're dealing with a limited number of skilled programmers. If there were unlimited resources, a parallel approach might work better.

But why fork a project needlessly when combined efforts could produce a product that is ultimately more intuitive and polished than two rough apps that waste twice the time for twice the learning curve?

I apologize for the run-on sentence.

Look at those paltry prizes. Even if I was the 1337est programmer on Earth, I still wouldn't quit my day job for Open Sores. Add another zero to the end and let's talk. Or three. Or six. $2000.000000! Now we're talking.

  7. Re:bullshit alarm on Microsoft Introduces IM Licensing · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think what it comes down to is control. By using their own protocol, Microsoft becomes the epicenter of all communications, which gives them the ability to leverage other technologies down its customers' throats. As has been demonstrated with the latest Netmeeting and Outlook Express and MSNIM, Microsoft isn't afraid to construct a web of dependencies between its applications. If you get one product, prepare to have five unrelated applications shoved down your throat as well. When every single user is at your beck and call, you don't have to fight as hard to push your agenda.

Ugh. After seeing this movie, I see grandiose Indian projects like this in a different light. http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0326/hoberman.p hp Why bother pursuing a space program when you have a country to care for? Such inappropriately lofty goals; it seems unethical to dump millions of dollars into ceramic tile R&D when your country (1,000,000,000+) largely lives below the poverty line? What people do for the sake of rabid nationalism is frightening.

  11. Limited production items on Real Money Inside in MMORPGs? · · Score: 1

Real value comes through scarcity. If such an economy were to exist, some major restraint would need to be exercised by the development team to stave off inflation. Perhaps title transfers could be done through a first-party escrow service, where the software company's costs of developing such a limited production item would be defrayed by knocking off some commission from the sale.
