  1. Yeah, this'll work... on Studios, RIAA Warn CEOs On File Trading · · Score: 5, Funny

I'm sure CEO's will try and get their employees to stop pirating music and movies. We all know how ethical and moral American CEO's are...

  2. They forgot one helluva important one... on Top Ten Physics Experiments Of All Times · · Score: 4, Informative

Um...Theodore Maiman/Charles Townes and the Laser! Anyone heard of those? I hear they're all the rage in Europe...and everywhere else. Maiman single-handedly took the theoretical ideas of Townes and constructed the first crude but working laser. That was a landmark achievement, and it was an important if not ingenious experiment in the history of science. Of course, since Townes got the Nobel prize, Maiman has sort of been relegated to obscurity, but that doesn't make his laser work any less important. Remember that next time you load up Warcraft III in that CDROM drive. How do you think it's being read, anyway?

  3. Others like him... on Lego Addictions · · Score: 5, Funny

Try here here. This guy does Lego construction for a living. A LIVING! I'd build Legos for a living to if it weren't for my lack of opposable thumbs...Oh, well, back to engineering.

  4. If you like Lego thingamabobs... on LoTR:LEGO Originals · · Score: 2, Interesting

Try here. Too bad HE hasn't built a LOTR set...although I figure some Slashdot reader has the money to commission such a project. Well...maybe not.

  5. Computers shouldn't start thinking... on Helping Computers Help Themselves · · Score: 1

Oy, this sounds like a Star Trek episode gone wrong (how ironic, that was the previous story). Computer given new ability to think/help itself (a vital upgrade that surely won't fail, Captain Picard!)...takes over ship (or office, as the case might be)...kills someone (nameless ensign or nameless employee)...new ability is erased...Captain says engage (or CEO says "lunchtime" or something). Seriously, though, I think the computers that try and fix themselves are just going to require MORE IT people to fix all the errors. It'll probably just muck up things worse than they were mucked before.

  6. Copyright Infringement is the Key on Online Marketing for an Indie Band? · · Score: 1
Here's a way to get noticed by the major labels. Release a CD, but include a couple of MP3's on there (like, say, Metallica or Eminem). That'll get the attention of the record-industry bigwhigs in a hurry.

If nothing else, you'll establish your band as a "band for the people waging war against those anti-mp3 jackasses!" and thus gain a cult following. After that, some record label should pick you up, thinking you'll make them "cool" and "with it."

If that ain't your thang, you can just include the words "Christian rock" in your band's description, and I'm sure you'll get picked up in a hurry. And make sure you have a few songs about women you've hurt so that you can have a crappy music video featuring some B-celeb like Tiffani Amber-Thiessen or Alyssa Milano that'll make you zoom to the top of the Vh1 charts. Wow, this post has become one long rant about nothing.

  7. Obligatory Star Trek Ref. on Fragfest · · Score: 1
Wait, I didn't get to go to QuakeCon..

    Con...CON...COOOOOON!!!!

  8. Two thoughts on this on In Print: MegaTokyo · · Score: 1
First, I do commend Mr. Gallagher for trying (and perhaps successfully)making Megatokyo a profitable comic. Profit-making webcomics are VERY few and far between. The only other ones I can think of are (correct me if I'm wrong): Penny Arcade
    PVP
    and possibly 8-bit Theatre
Numerous comics have print versions out, though. Aside from PVP and Penny Arcade above, GPF and I think Diesel Sweeties both have offline versions. So I ought congratulate Megatokyo.

Secondly, I thought I could add to the list of worthwhile webcomics to read:
    Penny Arcade (above)
    Res Life
    Mac Hall
    Angst Technology
    Zeek V2.0
I'll avoid the urge to shamelessly promote my own new comic :)

  9. Ah, a true nerd's war on Princeton Hacks Yale, Harvard Not Surprised · · Score: 2, Funny

Princeton: "Ha! We'll show those lousy Yale folks! Let's hack into their admissions website and accept the people they reject! That'll teach 'em!" Yale: "Those no-good ruffians at Princeton! That's it, we'll publish a scientific paper criticizing Princeton's actions as philosophical proof of their inferiority! That'll teach 'em!" Meanwhile, at, say, UT- UT: "OU beat us in football! Let's steal their president and shave him bald! That'll teach 'em!" OU: "That's it! Let's burn down their stadium! That'll teach 'em!"

  10. And the less-than-stellar offshoots on Seventeen Years of Tetris · · Score: 1

There was the infamous Nudetris I saw on all those BBS's back in the day. Man, who would have thought a bunch of L and Z-shaped breasts would be so popular... Oh wait.

  11. At least it's not a Dreamcast Rep... on Nintendo Hires Walking Gamers · · Score: 1

If it were, then there'd be all sorts of jokes about people coming up to the Dreamcast rep on the street and asking to see "Seaman." That poses a whole host of problems...

  12. Linux Set Radio: Future on Xbox Runs Its First Legal Homebrew App · · Score: 5, Funny

Think of all the gaming possibilities now available to X-Box developers! 'Shell Scripting Xtreme!' or 'Marvel vs. Capcom vs. Vi vs. emacs!' I hear in the next Halo your standard gun fires tarballs and RPM's.

  13. Deep L:inking Defined on Danish Court Rules Deep Linking Illegal · · Score: 5, Informative

Deep linking is when you link to an interior page. For example, Ticketmaster filed a lawsuit a while back (I think) against sites that linked users directly to interior pages to buy tickets for a specific show. Instead of going to www.ticketmaster.com and then searching for, say, Radiohead...a site that linked directly to the "Buy Radiohead tickets" page would be in violation.
    This lawsuit is pretty deep.

  14. I don't think that was LucasArts on Lucas Confuses ScummVM With Abandonware · · Score: 1, Funny

Are you sure it wasn't LeChuck controlling the LucasArts legal team? Maybe HE'S the one trying to take action against ScummVm. I don't imagine he likes to be open-source.

  15. Time Limit for a Copyright? on When Should File Formats Be Placed in the Public Domain? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not entirely sure how legally a file format can be public after a (relatively) short period of time such as 25 years. Most software methods and formats are copyrighted, not patented. They last a billion years, and yes, even after the company is dead. Few companies patent software for reasons I'm sure we've read on /. a billion times over. So, yeah, it sucks that file formats are lining the pockets of companies for a long time, but the alternative is to make ludicrous exceptions to copyright law. After file format protection goes, it's only a matter of time before the next big thing loses its protection as well...
