Without knowing the current Infrastructure that LA uses I can't say with certainty that Google will be less secure. However typical it is always more secure to keep your data in house than outsourcing that storage.

While the LA spokesman says it will be more secure that our current solution. I'm sure he is a PR weenie and if you talk to technicians in LA they would disagree.

  3. Re:Not government's job on Telco Sues City For Plan To Roll Out Own Broadband · · Score: 5, Interesting

The Citizens of Monticello request several times to TDS Telecommunications that they upgrade the cities connection. They kept saying "Soon, we'll get to it" That is when the citizens, not the government, passed a referendum to install a city run fiber network.

It was only after the city started installing that TDS Telecommunications sued the city and tied them up in a prolong court battle, which prevented them from continuing their install. During that time they started laying fiber of their own, by the time the city won the law suit TDS Telecommunications had completed their project and now offer 50mb to every household there for about 50$ a month.

I guess this just shows if you want your ISP to upgrade your connection, pass a law to get the city to do it and force their hand.

  5. Geocities was my first... on Geocities Shutting Down Today · · Score: 1

Although it seems like ages ago now, Geocities was my first web presence. In my youth I set up a web site dedicated to wolves, I can’t even recall the name of it, but I was in high school and Geocities was free, the perfect fit. It helped me develop a foreign language called HTML and gave me a basic understanding of websites. Although I eventually out grew the site and moved on to dedicated hosting solutions for future endeavors, it is still sad to see the service close.

While there are some obvious limitations to Geocities and the very annoying advertisements you could not beat the price, great starter service.

Goodbye Geocities, you'll be missed by me.

  7. Outsourcing IT work on Why Should I Trust My Network Administrator? · · Score: 1

The question isn't really about whether you should make them come on sight to do work, because a skilled admin could open everything up for him to access at another location with you watching over his shoulder and you wouldn't know the difference.

As in most cases it comes down to a decision of security versus convenience and money. If you want your data totally secure (if such a thing exists) then you need to hire your own IT staff to maintain your systems to give you better control over them, however you still run the risk of those employees stealing the data.

When you outsource any function of your company you enter into a trust relationship with that company. People and companies live and die by their reputation and you should defiantly investigate any company before entering in to any contract with them.
