  1. CD-ROM Driver voodoo on Computer Voodoo? · · Score: 1

Back in the Win98 days I had a homebuilt computer with some 4x CD-ROM drive, that I don't remember the name of. The problem was, that when booting from the Win98 CD (did a lot of reinstalling those days...), the standard drivers on that thing woulnd't recognise th CD-ROM drive. For some time I just had a bootdisk with the drivers that came with the drive and everything went smooth - that is, until that disc went fubar.

Well, I was young at the time and had plenty of time to allocate to such problems so I found a solution: Rebooting with the disc tray open and closing the drive during POST worked. When done like that the Win98 standard drivers would load for the drive.

Today I have no idea of just how I go the thought "Hey why don't I reboot with the drive open", and I Don't remember if tried sacrificing goats to the Computer Gods.

  2. Speaking of technology.... on Old Methods Used to Detect Liquid Explosives · · Score: 1

I used to work for a company that made bag handling systems for large scale airports. Part of these systems were of course various X-ray systems that could flag a bag as a potential bomb. These bags went to a special bomb chute, where they could be taken care of. In one particular system in southeast Asia this chute was just a small ramp that the "bomb" would slide down and then it would fall from approx. 2m height to the concrete floor. I guess that if it didn't explode on impact, the workers would just carry it to the plane :-)

  3. Old AMD CPU-cooler on PC Case Made Completely of Fans · · Score: 1

Somehow this reminds me of my old CPU cooler for a 350mHz AMD K6. It had dual fans, and it was just like living next to an airport - except that the noice from the cooler was constant. I was a (very) poor student at the time and had just blown all my money (and then some) on new hardware, so I hadn't got the cash to buy a semi-low-noice cooler for a month. If I ever develop tinitus, I know why... Since then I have always been shopping low-noice or passive-cooled hardware...

  5. Re:not cheap on Telco Spams and Gets Huge Fine · · Score: 2, Informative

Actually they got a volume discount! (no, I'm not joking you).

The standard rate in Denmark is approx. $18 (100 DKK) per message. But the poewrs that be (our government and it's institution) has opened up for discount in cases like this.

Debitel was offered a $180.000 (1.000.000 DKK) settlement over a year ago, but they decided, that they'd rather take it to court. That might have been a poor judgement from their management....

  6. They said it was a "joke" on Telco Spams and Gets Huge Fine · · Score: 3, Funny

As the article says, the emails and SMS messages were sent as the competitor TelMore was take over by TDC (the evil former state monopoly in Denmark). In court the Debitel people tried to explain to the judges that it was all "a joke".

Apparently the judge had no sense of humor...
