  1. Wireless Support on Worst Linux Annoyances? · · Score: 1

Wireless support (for cheaper aka not cisco) cards. I would have moved to linux on my laptop (the only one that hasn't been switched over) a long time ago. If only the wireless networking would work with out crashing. I can get it to work (although a pain), but after a while of surfing (5-15 min) it crashes. I keep installing new distros, but always the same result. When that gets fixed, I'll be all over it.

  2. Kyocera 7135 on SSH or VNC From Your Cell Phone? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have a Kyocera 7135, and had a 6035. Both can do ssh sessions with a palm ssh client. You can use the grafiti input to send commands, not as nice as a keyboard, but I can use that a lot faster than one of those small thumb keyboards. There's also a vnc client, works alright if you're on 1rxtt network, not so good with just standard dial up (or atleast not when you have a 2480x768 X session). Not the most beautiful view, but if you need it, it works.

would still require some sort of docking station is order to send pics from my digital camera

Not exactly, the Kyocera 7135 has a sd card slot. Take pictures with a nice 3.1mp camera, pop the card into the phone, e-mail them on the spot.

most websites simply are unreadable on phones, part of it is that you know that you're paying by the kilobyte -- so much for opening tabs

Depending on your phone browser. I can actaully view webpages very nicely on mine. It can also be setup to scroll left and right if the formatting gets messed up the otherways.
There are lots of plans that don't charge per mb.
Tabs are nice, but who'd really want them if you're only looking for one thing (as is the case with most cell-web usage.

  4. Yes and No. on Do People Really Use Their PDAs? · · Score: 1

I started with a palm m100 my frosh year of college, after two weeks it was attached to the sync cable for the rest of it's life.

About a year ago i bought a used palm-smartphone used when my old phone died. I now keep everything on it. I use it to surf when bored in class, to keep track of my schedule and random meetings, to remind me to acually go to class, keep track of how much junk food I really didn't need to buy, and send e-mail. I also have it set to synch up with evolution, and then my schedule gets posted on my website daily.

Nobody wants to carry around two devices, so the cell phone will always win over the PDA, if you can't beat them, join em.

  5. Not like a car airbag. on Air Bags for Planetary Defense · · Score: 1

This idea has been around for a little while, and unlike a lot of the posts here, it's not an airbag like in a car. The idea is to have a big bag, pushed by a rocket, deflect, not reflect the object, and all random mass around it.

  6. Metal Case & Window on How To Travel With LCD Gaming Screen? · · Score: 1

Get a metal case (larger than you need) and put a plastic window in it, then hook the lcd screen up to the case on the inside. Get a wireless kb/mouse and have the reciever in the case. Good pair of headphones, and a case tote and you're all set. Only wires you have to worry about are the power for the case and monitor. Not the best for gaming, but nice and compact. Now like half the other posts I must say why? If this were for a few weeks traveling that would be one thing, but for a weekend? If he were mine, I'd be telling him to either do it himself or go out and do something, if nothing else go find an arcade, at least there are people you can play face to face with.

  7. If you can... on System Administrators - College or Career? · · Score: 1

If you can afford college, go. Most big companies look for a degree, something that shows you can learn. Also, most people that get a degree get better starting $. $ is good.

Also, college is the best time of most peoples lives, you meet a lot of people, and make lots of contacts for later down the road. If you can get a job as an assistant sys admin while in college, maybe someone who goes in on the weekends and helps out even, that would be great. But most importantly get the degree, and while you are bored in classes learn on your own.

Also, as far as getting training, I wouldn't go out and pay for anything like that. Most companies will pay for your training. If you know the basics you can get a foot in the door, then let them pay for your training.
