The problem with VISTA is that it was launched it BETA. Missing drivers, big footprint hardware requirements, and horrible power management (which drained many a laptop battery) caused the early demise of VISTA. I gave up on VISTA, but I understand that MS is slowly working out the problems. Legacy drivers will always be a problem for VISTA and the TPM/DRM features will continue to make smarter users shun VISTA.
I am back to the DUAL BOOT Linux/XP on my older hardware and performance is decent. Same hardware with VISTA... forget about it.
Having the computer work just like a TV, toaster, or microwave is very appealing to many. I don't know MS can't come up with refinements to make the computer "just work", but most of the time email and web are all I need. If someone can make that work at the push of a button, I'll probably use it a lot and so will my parents and grandparents.
I haven't tried Firefox v3 or even read the criticism, but isn't this an option that can be enabled or disabled under options/exceptions? I doubt that this would get put in there without the option to turn it off. The reason I 'assume' this is because MANY companies accidentally let their security CERTS expire. If someone forgot to renew their CERT, like GMAIL did last month and there was no way to create an exception, imagine the interruption. It took me awhile to figure out what had happened after I upgraded Firefox last time and couldn't get to gmail.
Never argue with a fool or they will consider themselves wise in their own eyes.
The best way to deal with fools is to ignore them. Delete their accounts, posts, and ban their IPs (if possible). Eventually, they will go away and find a place where they can get and audience. Fools do not want to be ignored. Their fool desires to show everyone their superior intellect and intelligence through their criticism of someone who has created/done something.
Ignore, delete, ban, repeat. Fools typically are too lazy to bother recreating an account and quickly move on.
Most hiring is done by managers who haven't give too much thought to YOU. An alarm pops up on their Outlook/Crackberry, they print/grab your resume' and head to the conference room (if you're lucky).
My strategy has been to bring a binder of code snippets in (courier-new) font organized by language. This is excellent for two reasons, 1) You have something to talk about when they ask you the "Tell me about yourself and what you've been doing." question as they quickly scan your resume' and 2) You will look prepared and competent and be able to talk about the projects and programs you have worked on.
Additionally, you may also wish to bring some screen shots, business process/data flow diagrams, and a database table relationship diagram to show that you can visualize a complete solution and start with a business process and drill down to database layouts and code. The nice thing about having all this in a book is that you can do a show and tell without leaving your current company's proprietary code lying about. Resist the urge to give out copies, CDs, or organize this into a website since this will keep you out of potential hot water. Remember, you are showing small code snippets, not 10,000 lines of code. The goal is to show off a bit without giving away any secrets.
It actually has a nice Web 2.0 interface and is currently playing FREE music if you want to try it. However it doesn't have my favorite Yngwie Malmsteen CD, but has a good selection. Oh, and if you don't know who Yngwie Malmsteen is, then go listen for free right now.
American's like to own and collect stuff. That's why houses, TVs, and MP3 storage capacity keep getting larger and larger. If I simply rent songs, what is the point of buying a 500GB video IPod or having the 5 Terabytes in my MythTV media center? The only way I see this plan working is if I rent it 10 times, that entitles me to own it. 10 rents = 1 purchase and you have to give me 1 penny back to be the same price as ITunes. Got it looosers?
It was often said in days of yore that Windows was the best $80 Solitaire game one could buy. However, I believe that Sid Meir games such as Civilization dwarf Solitaire have consumed far more time. Civilization IV is epic and can take days to finish a single game.
I won't even touch the MMORPG's like Evercrack and WOW.
Can anyone get me a pre-release demo of StarCraft II ? That is the one I really want to waste a lot of time on.
If you are upset enough over compensation to leave, then leave. Don't play offer/counter offer games which will end with you ultimately leaving because you look like an opportunist. If you want to be an opportunist, just threaten to leave during a critical part of a project. You can evoke the same offer, only faster.
I was a good IT worker that worked 7x24 to keep things running smoothly since downtime=money. However the suits took over and decided that they were infinately more important that the technology people delivering services and making money. Then Ralph an ex-AT&T exec we had just hired told me that the 'purpose of "stock-options" was not to make employees rich'. Ralph was right, he got his stock options and left in search of another victim/company.
So, 4-years ago, I took my ball and went home. This year (4.5-years after leaving) I got a call from an ex-senior manager asking to come back at a high salary, but I couldn't negotiate 3-months vacation so I turned it down:). I am teaching now and coach my own FIRST robotics team, the satisfaction is much, much higher. Not working 7x24 is nice too, especially with summers off.
The situation that the suits created is only going to worsen. When the salaries of TOP TECHIES are equal to that of directors and VP's again, I will consider going back. We work just as hard and we are required to know the business end to end, keep things agile, and be smart everyday.
The complexity of the modern world increases everyday and it is built on technology. I would encourage all technies to work hard, but continue to have high expectations and demand respect and compensation. You are worth it! Most CEO's aren't.

I took the VISTA plunge (as a test) on a new laptop. I plan to upgrade to XP over Christmas break. VISTA drivers are still pretty rough and have crash issues. I think I finally have achieved a stable laptop with no blue screens, but system performance is an issue. VISTA just idling consumes about 10% of the CPU, not to mention it is always waking the harddrive up. Amazingly, VISTA (the new king of all multimedia) doesn't have a built-in app that uses a USB webcam... very strange.
My biggest beef is that the VISTA System Recovery software doesn't work. I did a complete VISTA backup to DVD and wanted to test a system restore. I booted the VISTA CD and selected Restore Entire System but the restore software doesn't recognize the DVD backup set. This irked me since laptops no longer come with restore media, so I guess it is back to Ghost.
My feeling is that VISTA is much akin to Windows ME which was the retarded cousin on Win98. Everyone knows that VISTA is a hyperactive drooling OS and most will just take a step back and see what MS churns out next, or move to Ubuntu. At least my plan is to put VISTA back in the box and ignore it.
Not only that, but digital cable REQUIRES a set top box because they encrypt the BASIC CABLE channels? So, even if I go out and spend $4000 on a giant wall mount Digital LCD panel, I still have to have the SET TOP BOX unless I want to limit myself to OTA (Over The Air Broadcast) HD channels and Digital Mexican Music stations. I want the FCC to mandate that DIGITAL CABLE has to work the same as ANALOG CABLE so I don't need a SET TOP box for NON-PREMIUM CHANNELS.
I am backing whoever defeats DRM so I can connect an HDMI cable to my MythTV box and record.watch Hi-Def content. Until that happens I will record analog only and get the High-Def content through other channels.
Great comment. Oh and I vote for closing the borders between the US and Mexico, US and China, and halting immigration for at least 10 years until the current mess can be sorted out. Our government talks about security when half of our military equipment is made out of the country. Worse we are losing control of our food supply as poisoned food comes sailing in from China. Think eating fish is healthy? Think again. If we don't pull our collective head out of our collective ass soon, we are going to end up just like Mexico (Corrupt Government, Extreme Concentration of Wealth, Polluted Environment, In Debt, Massive Inflation, Tiny Middle Class).
On a side note, I had to call California last week and misdialed the number. The automatic message I heard was in SPANISH. Apparently the el numero I dialed was el disconnecto. I like America as an English speaking Democracy, not as a Spanish Speaking Unfair Trade Zone where not even mighty Wal*Mart can continue to make growth projections. However, maybe have done such a poor job of managing the country, it is time to turn it over to our Hispanic and Chineese Overlords.
Yep, sign up for Charter FREE UNLIMITED LONG DISTANCE and get an itemized bill of all your long distance and zone calls. I think this is so the marketing drones can pull the run out from under you at some future date and point out HOW MUCH FREE SERVICE you have been getting. It appears that companies just want to keep their options open in-case they decide to eliminate or charge MORE for the FREE UNLIMITED SERVICE.
Now that we know this, we should have a contest and see who can generate the largest bill.
There is no way border patrol agents are going to get these LED weapons. In the USA the government prosecutes and locks up any Border Patrol agents who defend our country from drug smugglers and the hordes that are entering illegally. This reasoning is just smoke and mirrors to spend money on a new toy developed by a "friend" of the current administration. It's time to spend our money to fix the national infrastructure (bridges) and give the border patrol agents rifles with scopes and land mines.
Geez... our infrastructure is falling apart and instead of fixing the 80 year old steam lines, sewers, and electric cables it is time to invest in a DIGITAL CAMERA network. At least the odds are that a camera will get a good shot of the next exploding steam line, collapsing bridge, or truck eating sink hole. Well, unless of course the power is out because the electrical grid is down, but I am sure these cameras will have the finest battery backups.
The Department of Homeland security budget has clearly achieved Borg status.
What a silly, greedy lawyer. Hey, I am willing to give up all my little black boxes at home which record, timeshift, and stream, as long as there as a service that will (flexibly) host/record all my favorite shows and let me play them back anytime I want. I am even willing to give up my monthly cable bill. Just plug me in to the giant VOD (Video on Demand) server and let me watch whatever, whenever (flexibly).
And while you are at it, get me movies, the top 250 from You Tube, the best International and Indie films, Net Flix, and give it to me streamed, HI-DEF, 1080i, low-def, ipod size, or even burned on a DVD-R. I am sick of all the care and feeding of black boxes and wires, just make it happen.
My advice, instead of racking your tiny little lawyer brain on ways to complicate everyones existence and meddle in areas where you don't have a clue, why not get the MBA's and Techies together and see if they can come up with a VOD business model that works. If it works well and is reasonably priced I think all the other problems will melt away. If you don't believe me, just ask Steve Jobs. MOD (Music on Demand) seems to be working out pretty well for Apple, I think they just hit 3 billion songs.
In other news, Toy Makers want to limit the amount of rooms and vehicles which your children's toys can be enjoyed in. If a toy is used in more than 2 rooms, a duplicate toy should be purchased. If a toy is used in a vehicle a special mobility license must be purchased for the toy. If your child's toys are shared with other children this is a violation of the toy license. When you look at this is a different context.....:)
Apparently, the school board has realized that Office 2007 is not compatible with other versions of Office since MS-Word makes the new scary ".docx" files. However, instead of making everyone in the city upgrade, why not just go under options and change MS-Word to save as the standard ".doc" files. This way, the school board will only waste tax payer money once. Silly school board.

Or Bike with a friend before work. The friend part is essential since it provides motivation. Getting up early to exercise all alone is hard to do.
