  1. Nice Idea but.... on Microsoft Looks At Integrating Forums and E-mail · · Score: 1

I don't think this will work. Mostly because other problems with email make threaded discussions impossible. Specifically users reply to the last mail you sent just to get the email address they want. COntent of the messages typically is irrelevant.

If we don't get contacts working correctly there is no hope for a feature like this being too useful. I hate trying to find the name of a person through address books and contact lists. At most organizations this things are huge and too time consuming to go through like a directory. So instead you need to remember the correct amount of letters to type so the name server recognizes the address you are looking for. Its rote memorization. It sucks. People rather just go five emails back and reply. There are ways to fix the contact problems but I doubt we will see them anytime soon.

Of course there is a chance that the feature would still be useful, if all my messages with one person can be seen in view, Its just like sorting by name, I could dig that.

Problem with the Chinese strategy is that they don't have any content

Hong Kong (now part of China) is famous for its movies. You know those crazy actions movies that inspired the Matrix. Not to mention Croaching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

I can't imagine the market for Chinese films decreasing as that country continues to become more weathly.

The Windows version is better, but not for your stupid reasons. First look at the tabs, like the dock the dumb-asses but them in the center, breaking fitz Law. Next their design is actually bigger than the Windows version, although you would almost not notice based on the scaling of the images. Third, they waste even more space than the windows dialog, its a window in a window. Basically all their critiques are wrong. Plus they violate the same principles in thier design. The only thing that is better in the apple dialog is the radio button for never. This lets the user know this option is there while the first only indicates that other times will be listed in the drop-down selector.

  4. One and the same on Physical and Network Security Merging? · · Score: 2, Insightful

When someone comes into your server farm with a gun and says "Let me access info I want or I'll blow your fucking heads off"! Then you will understand that security is security.

Plus the best place to hack a network is from the inside. Its not a "mission impossible" to get yourself access to a computer at any major financial institution here in the states.

Data is an asset that needs to be protected both in the physical world where it is stored and, and in the virtual world where it is acessed. The goal in each arena is the same, ignoring either is irresponsible. Thus the inevitability of these two departments combining.

The ASP I was working for last year was very forward thinking on this and ran both network and physical security as a simgle entity. Unfortunatly thinking ahead in security, didn't translate to thinking ahead when creating a sustainable business model.

You need to realize that a software instrument is a gimmick. Most all modern synths are software based (sample play back. My EMU samplers are basically 386's with 64 megs of ram. So when you buy a real synth you are only purchasing an interface. Unless you have a touch screen monitor, that you keep face up, you can never achive realtime useability with a software synth.

Why should you hire a native born worker when a forign one will work for less?

Thats why we should not let them in. The government works for its citizens, not for the aliens. Idealy it should not favor the intrests of the businesses who only want a way to pay workers less.

Instead of worrying about who will ask for the least money. How about setting a fair market value wage for the position and hire the best candidate who will accept it. National origen aside. I realize this is idealistic and inherently anti-profit. How ever asking for a fair amount of work for a fair wage is the ethical thing to do. If you feel like your pulling one over on someone because they don't know what their skills are worth, you are doing something immoral.

Remember the free market only works in a condition of perfect information.

The software co I work for went from an elegent and simple website, to an over-designed monstrosity. Helplessly I sat by and watch the crime occur. Despite being the interface desinger for the software, the marketing guys would not even consider my perspective.

From simple text based links, we got dropped down dhtml menus. From a simple logo graphic, we got business people high-fiving on the home page.

Marketing believed that our site was not about giving information to users, and potential users of our software. Rather our site's purpose was to create an image of company(a false one)relating to our size and prior successes. Unfortunatly a book like this will not convince them otherwise.

  14. Great Expectations on Overture Search Terms Showcase Piracy Desire · · Score: 1

One factor that often goes ignored when speaking about piracy is user expectation. Being the computer nerd at the office, and at home, I have ample oppertunity to observe newbies on their using their computers. What you notice about these new users it that they expect all the software they will ever need to be on their computer. Its happend so often but it always amazes me. A new users learns that office didn't come preinstalled on their computer. Harried they call me and ask why they can't open thier spread sheet from work. I then have to explain that office is seperate piece of software, one that they need to purchase. A related issue arrises when users start burning copies or purchased software to friends. People are social creatures. Cooperation and sharing between people are dictated, at least to an extent, by instinct. People share software, because we always share when the costs of sharing are negligable. You will never know when you need a favor. This is how we are hard-wired to think. Information assests don't conform to our ways of valuing property.
