  1. Re:Stock Tip on Apple to Unveil New Leopard OS in August · · Score: 3, Insightful

Because Apple is a HARDWARE company. They want to sell BOXES. To make OS X available for other hardware would mean the inclusion of countless drivers, support for vitually limitless hardware configurations, and the hiring of a huge support staff to manage the problems associated with a market that is far from manageable (among other things). These are just some of the problems Microsoft must deal with on a daily basis. But because Apple is a HARDWARE company, they can keep a short leash on the hardware they support, which helps keep their OS lean, the development cycles short, and launches rock-solid.

If we think in terms of postal mail, postage has not reduced or eliminated direct mail advertising. The reason? Mass mailers can negotiate reduced rates. Think it will be any different for spammers?

  11. Remember Windows 3.1? on Programmers and the "Big Picture"? · · Score: 1

As a programmer myself, I have come to realize that programmers are not always afforded the opportunity to "see the bigger picture." On larger projects, programmers can be assigned stubs or modules to write with guidelines on how to handle specific events. But in cases where a potential event hasn't been specifically defined -- yet the programmer knows it could occur -- a "default" event must be coded. This was ever so evident in Windows 3.1 when the error "not enough memory" could have meant one of dozens of problems.
