  1. Open Source It on OS/2 Going, Going... Gone · · Score: 5, Insightful

Before you all go posting requests to IBM to open source OS/2, just remember whose code is in there: Microsoft. Remember, it was a joint venture between the two companies. Do you think that Microsoft would allow it to be open sourced? Anyway, it's technologically behind all the free Unixes, so what possibly could one learn from it, other than what was actually possible 10 years (or more) ago on realtively low-specced machines.

I think the point is to stop the MS monopoly by there being alternative products to those of MS, and allowing other software vendors to participate in the market. If M$ Office were suddenly to appear on Linux and every other version of UNIX, it's just possible that MS would kill any last vestage of competition. Luckily, OpenOffice etc. have got some momentum behind them already so that probably won't happen. Can you imagine a world in which you could choose whatever word processor you like as long as it's Word?

HP will live to regret this. They're retiring a mature, stable, established and best-of-breed architecture (Alpha) for an unproven, late, incompatible, expensive, clumsy one (itanium). Their competitors must be laughing all the way to the bank. Just what is HP doing? Why do large corporations make such crazy decisions?

Mozilla's performance is barely acceptable on my humble 500MHz K6-2. It stinks on UltraSPARC. I suspect it stinks on anything that isn't x86, partly because of GCC's inefficiency on non-x86 architectures. Therefore I hate to think what it would be like on a 206MHz StrongARM. I think Mozilla needs a lot of optimization before anyone can contemplate running it on a handheld. On a related note, why is Netscape 7 so much faster than Mozilla on the same machine? I know an ipaq user who runs dillo for his web browser. It seems far better suited to hand-held use.
